Family Connect - Your connection to the University

An Update from the

Family Services and Support Team

Greetings, Seawolf Families!

The Family Services and Support Team is your partner in working toward student success. We are your direct contact anytime you have questions about family programs on campus or have concerns about your student. The Family Services and Support Team is aware that there may be times when a family member just needs to talk over a situation involving their student, with the intention of gaining a better understanding of options and resources that may be available. We are here for you, so please reach out!

Family Weekend:

The Family Services and Support team has been busy welcoming back all of our Seawolves and are excited to get to know their family members during Family Weekend from Friday, September 30 to Sunday, October 2. On Saturday, the university is also hosting CommUniversity Day

It is going to be a fun-filled weekend, with plenty of opportunities to experience campus life with your student, including rooting for the Seawolves in a home football game, family barbeque, and coffee with President McInnis!

Tips from Students

What's it like to be a student at SBU? Hear it from a Seawolf!

We hear from Yajvin Dabbiru, a senior and drum major of the Spirit of Stony Brook Marching Band. Yaj talks to us about school spirit and his favorite memory from Family Weekend!

Tips from Students - Family Weekend

Families' Corner

In this issue we speak to Hedieh Yazdanseta, mother of Lilly, a new Seawolf, about her experiences being a parent of a child walking through the orientation process, and what she expects to see in the upcoming Family Weekend!

Can you please share with us what "school spirit" means for a family member(s)? Have you ever been a part of Family Weekend?

I have never been part of Family Weekend. For me, I hope to see a showcase of engagement from campus (staff and faculty) in welcoming families onto campus. I hope to see my daughter being engaged and introducing me to various staff and friends. I hope we have an opportunity to meet other parents, meet faculty and staff, see a game, grab a bite and get some swag.

Any last insights or tips you may have for either new Families or returning Families for this Fall Semester?

I would say to reach out for help. Ask a lot of questions and seek out the office of Student Life and Family Support Services to get all your questions answered. It's a large university but we are a small community who are here to help and support students and families. I'd also suggest they come to campus, go to a game, eat lunch in West Side with their students, walk the academic mall and take part in community events.
