Principal Notes                                                           April 30, 2020

Dear Families,

Random Acts of Kindness are all around these days.  I'm sure you have your own stories. I would like to share one that is about my own family.

My niece is 23 and almost one year out of nursing school.  She is a RN at an area hospital.  A year ago she was so excited to graduate and get her first job in a profession she trained for. She wanted to make a difference. So much has changed with the COVID-19 pandemic. She is taking care of people that are sick and dying with no family around them. Death is hard to watch at any age, but it is especially brutal at 23 when you are so full of life. Being a nurse at this time is also lonely. It wasn't safe for her to live with her family - my sister, brother-in-law and niece. She decided that she would move out to keep them safe.

My sister was sharing with her friend (who lives in Elm Grove) about how sad this was making her daughter. It was the same conversations that we all have about our children with our friends.
It connects us to each other and helps us get through hard times.  My sister's friend decided she could do something small to help.  She asked the kids across the street to make cards so she could give them to a nurse she knew that needed some cheering up.

My niece received the cards.  Such a small act of kindness from a stranger made her life a little bit brighter.  As my sister was telling me this story she asked me if I knew the family that the cards came from.  Yes, I told her, they were one of my families from St. Mary's.  Thank you to that family, from my family.  Your small act of kindness made a difference in the life of a young nurse during this incredibly difficult time.

Today would have been the opening for our Spring Musical, "The Sound of Music."  I know that there was some talk about performing this at a later date. It breaks my heart to let you know that after discussions with Fr. Peter, we have decided to cancel it. This is just not feasible.
Even after more areas of our community will be allowed to open with caution, social distancing will be our new norm. Our first priority is keeping our students and families safe while this pandemic continues.

Thank you to Mrs. Kessler, Ms. Posyhalla, Ms. Gleason and the cast and crew for their tireless work. Your commitment and your enthusiasm is what St. Mary's is all about.

Next Friday, was supposed to be our 2nd annual Grand Friend's Day. Please take the time next week and have your children call or send a special note to their grandparents/special friend.
I think they would love to get something handwritten!

On Monday, June 1st we were scheduled to have our annual Field Day.  It is still on! This year it will be a Virtual Field Day. We have some great ideas planned for you. This will be a great way to close out the school year.

This week we are starting a new column for VB. We are calling it "SMV STRONG."  We are asking the teachers and you, the parents, how do you stay strong during this time.  Please share with Mrs. Dries ( [email protected] ) what you are doing.  We will share them with you because "we all need a little help from our friends."

Stay SMV Strong!
Faithfully,

Mary Tretow

Capuchin Bags
On Tuesday, April 28, a representative from the Capuchin Community services came to our school and picked up the hygiene bags families donated as part of their almsgiving during Lent of this year. Thank you to every family who generously supported this Lenten effort. If you still have your hygiene bags at home and they are filled, we will have another collection date announced at a later time. God bless you for thinking of "the least of these", especially during these challenging times.

Another way  to help St. Mary's Visitation
Need help with all of your photos on your phones? Want to create something special for Grandma and Grandpa? Need help with your Christmas cards?  We have the thing just for you.  We will be working with Shutterfly to earn extra money for St. Mary's Visitation.  All you need to do is go to this website and away you go.

Good News
Are you hungry for books? Are you tired of digital downloads? Have you read the books in your home over and over? Are you desperate for something new to read? We are all in luck because two libraries in our area are now doing curbside pickup.  If you have a library card for Elm Grove or any Waukesha County library, go to the New Berlin Library website. They have instructions on how to check out books and pick them up. If your library card is for any library in Milwaukee County, the Wauwatosa Library is doing the same thing. Both libraries have online catalogs so see what you can find. Leave it to the libraries to find a way to get books into our hands!

Need some book suggestions?

Here are a few links with some suggestions and reviews:

Do you have SMV library books at your home?

In just a few weeks you will be receiving instructions on how and when to return your SMV library books. Please start searching your house and gathering up all of those books so you can be ready when we announce a drop off procedure.

Photos Needed
Parents please keep sending photos of you and your child during this time.  We would love to share them on Facebook.

Positively SMV

All SMV students will most certainly interact with Mrs. Elizabeth Harrison.  Elizabeth is the co-director of Catholic Formation at SMV, focusing on k5-4th and 9-12th grades.  Our 2nd grade students have the opportunity to work with Elizabeth during their preparation for First Holy Communion.  Elizabeth has been a catechist at SMV for 16 years and on staff for 6 of those.  She was raised in a Sicilian culture where every Sunday after Mass her family would visit her grandmother, pray the rosary, celebrate saints and eat pasta!  Her family was instrumental in growing her faith and her desire to teach the Catholic faith.  Elizabeth enjoys working at SMV for this reason- there is such a "strong presence of Christ".  Thank you Elizabeth for sharing your faith with our students!
Staying SMV Strong

Prayer has saved me in this time of uncertainty. I spend more time gardening and baking. Anything I can do to be away from my computer
has helped immensely!--Mrs. Tretow

Yoga and coloring are my way of staying strong.--Mrs. Dries

Instead of getting my kids off to various sport practices, I am taking this time to teach my kids how to cook and bake--Mrs. Klein

I have been SMV Strong by staying connected to my family, friends, students and coworkers.--Mrs. Schneider

I am enjoying every bonus moment that I have with my daughter Madison since she should be studying at the University of Georgia 900 miles away.  This is by far the greatest blessing of this pandemic.--Mrs. Smrz.

SMV Athletics

Concession Stand Duty
SMV Athletics is looking for someone to take over the concession stand duty assignment job starting in the fall of 2020.  This is a great job for someone that does not want to have a concession stand duty assignment!!  It requires creating a sign up genius for the volleyball and basketball seasons and filling the spots with athletic student's parents.  You will also be part of the Athletic Board which meets 2 or 3 times throughout the school year.  Katy Cornell will be happy to work with you on the transition.  Please reach out to Katy if you are interested at 262.391.4044.
