2021-2022 Year-End Financial Recap

With the completion of the SCMR 2021-2022 fiscal year, I would like to take this opportunity to provide an update on the finances of our society. I am happy to report that SCMR remains in excellent financial health, while continuing to invest in important initiatives in the domains of training and certification, outreach and advocacy, as well as research and education. We have successfully navigated the shift to a 2nd virtual SCMR Scientific Sessions and mitigated pandemic-related financial losses due to the hard work of our board, CEO, scientific program committee, and AMC operations team.

In the past year, the executive committee, CEO, and our operations team have continued to build operational efficiencies in order to invest our membership dues effectively and correctly in SCMR. These efforts will allow us to pursue innovative projects, spearheaded by our member committees and SCMR board, while ensuring stability and sustainable growth of SCMR. Please continue to support our society be renewing your membership and paying your dues on time.

Thanks to the efforts by the executive committee and financial team, over the past several years SCMR has built reserves to ensure the long-term financial stability of our society. I am delighted to report that this trend has continued, and we have again ended the 2021-2022 fiscal year with a positive balance. Our goal is to continue this trend, which will provide the necessary financial stability to maintain operational efficiency of SCMR in case of a year with unexpected financial losses, while allowing us to invest in the future growth of our society.

I would also like to acknowledge the support and partnership of our Industry Advisory Board, which has allowed us to carry out important projects in the areas of advocacy and awareness of CMR, such as the HeartMRI.org website.

It has been a privilege to serve as SCMR Secretary Treasurer for the 2021-2022 fiscal year and I wish us all a healthy next year. I look forward to meeting in person at the SCMR 2023 Scientific Sessions in San Diego in January.

Sincerely,

Michael Markl, PhD, FSCMR

SCMR Secretary-Treasurer

SCMR LATAM

2da Reunión Regional de Cardiología 2022

In an ambitious project, SCMR and ANCAM joined forces to organize the first SCMR LATAM to spread state-of-the-art knowledge among Spanish-spoken physicians, technologists, trainees, physicists, and all related professionals interested in the field of CMR. Our outstanding Directors, Lilia M. Sierra-Galan, Katia Menacho, and Claudia Prieto, put together a superb proposal of well-trained Spanish-speaking and world-class leaders in the field, which was reviewed and approved by the SCMR Executive Committee and accepted by ANCAM leadership. Thanks to everyone involved in the Scientific Program. All talks were given in Spanish, either originally spoken or professionally translated. We are very proud to announce that our project was a complete success since we achieved our goal and were very well received by the audience; several scholarships were given to attendees from different countries of Latin America and Spain. We had 1,380 registrations, with the constant active participation of 885, and 9,100 interactions on the website. Thanks to the support and financial sponsorship of both societies, SCMR and ANCAM, we came up with high-quality educational material, which will remain available on demand for anyone who desires access to this rich and extensive resource.

CMR Updates from Bangladesh

Despite the proven utility of CMR worldwide, translating that into clinical awareness within the healthcare system in Bangladesh is a challenge. Further challenges come from high infrastructural costs of service set-up and limited local expertise.

Nonetheless, following on from our last update in 2020, through the perseverance and extraordinary leadership of faculty at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujb (BSM) Medical University, we are excited to announce the first CMR service ever at a government institution in Bangaldesh.

The new facility proposes to provide a clinical, academic, and research CMR centre of excellence for the whole nation. It also plans to be a reference centre for postgraduate training and catalyse the development of more local medical service innovations.

Honourable Vice-Chancellor Prof. Sharfuddin Ahmed (pictured centred at desk) inaugurated the new CMR centre in Bangabandha Sheikh Mujb Medical University, Dhaka, Bangladesh. The team of faculty members (standing behind) includes Prof. Sajal Banree (Professor of University Grant Commission Department of Cardiology), Prof. Harisul haque (Head of the Clinical Division), Prof. Chowdhury Meshkat Ahmed (Head of Heart Failure Division), and Prof. AM Fazlur Rahman (Chairman of Cardiology), along with other distinguished faculty from Department of Radiology BSMMU.

Coming up in August, September, and October

The Machine Learning Subcommittee of SCMR is pleased to announce three additional hands-on workshops on the use of machine learning (ML) in MRI for congenital heart disease. This series of workshops is particularly aimed at beginners in the field of machine learning. It is particularly suitable for clinicians working in MRI for CHD but is available to anyone who wants to learn the basics of ML and get first-time hands-on experience in the use of ML in MRI. The goal of these workshops is for you to learn about ML and take these lessons away and to start collecting good quality data at your own institutions, training your own ML networks, and contributing to registries. There is no cost, you do not need to be an SCMR member, and each session is 1.5 hours. Contact Jenny: jennifer.steeden@ucl.ac.uk.

Session #2 will be on Wednesday, 31 August 2022, 5 pm UK time. This session will be a recap from Session #1 and Q&A, followed by the first half of the Classification task.

The Aliasing Artefact in Phase Contrast Flow Imaging

An aliasing artefact occurs when there is a mismatch between the prescribed velocity encoding (venc) range and the true peak velocity of blood flow within the blood vessel. The aliasing artefact will appear as a black and white pixilating affect within the lumen of the vessel (Figure 1, red arrows). A sequence which has aliased must be repeated to eradicate the artefact by increasing the venc (Figure 2). In good practice, it is important that when a venc is chosen, it closely matches the true peak velocity of the blood vessel. If the venc is set too high, the acquired data will be impacted by background noise, which will underestimate the true peak velocity value. Utilising a scout sequence will not only determine the correct venc value, it will also confirm you are in the correct slice position and orientation.

Figure 1: Aliasing artefact within the lumen of the blood vessel

Figure 2: Increasing the venc has removed the artefact.

Cases of SCMR

NUMBER 22-08: LGE IN NEONATE

A near term newborn with maternal history of chorioamnionitis was admitted to the neonatal ICU for respiratory distress after birth. He was managed as per the unit protocol for neonatal sepsis. He was soon noted to have persistent atrial tachycardia requiring rate control with medical therapy, after attempts at cardioversion with vagal maneuvers, adenosine and synchronized cardioversion failed. Initial transthoracic echocardiogram revealed normal cardiac anatomy with normal myocardial contractile function. He subsequently developed myocardial dysfunction and low cardiac output state requiring inotropic support. There was mild troponin leak and detection of enterovirus in blood by PCR raising suspicion of neonatal myocarditis.
