Final Call for ILCLA 2021 Registration

The University of Georgia Latin American and Caribbean Studies Institute cordially extends a final call for registration for the 3rd International Symposium on Indigenous Languages and Cultures of Latin America (ILCLA 2021). If you wish to attend ILCLA 2021, please register using the button below no later than Monday, March 15.

The Symposium will take place virtually on March 19-20 and March 26-27. There will be an exciting, multi-disciplinary group of panelists from across the Americas, exploring wide-ranging issues related to indigenous language, culture, and society. We hope to see you at ILCLA 2021!

Artist's Talk on Dancing with Devils: Latin American Mask Traditions

On March 22 (11:10-12:30pm), join the exhibit curators and artists for a look behind the making of the Dancing with Devils: Latin American Mask Traditions digital exhibit. The event will include a discussion with documentary photographer Leonardo Carrizo and special guest Fernando Endara, Diablo de Píllaro. This exhibit presents a collection of Latin American masks from the Center for Latin American Studies’ Andean and Amazonian Cultural Artifacts Collection alongside photographs of a Diablada de Píllaro in the Ecuadorian province of Tungurahua. Diablada festivals are among the most widely recognized celebrations in Latin America.

Global Comics Lecture Series: Marcelo D'Salete

University Libraries’ International and Area Studies Department, in partnership with the Center for Latin American Studies’ Afro-Brazilian Arts and Activism Lecture Series, will present the next installment of the Global Comics Lecture Series: an invited talk by Brazilian comic artist, illustrator and professor Marcelo D’Salete. D’Salete’s acclaimed graphic novels Cumbe (Run for It) and Angola Janga (Kingdom of Runaway Slaves) explore the history of slavery and struggles for freedom in colonial Brazil. The event will be held March 19 (2:20-3:40 pm) and is free and open to the public.

Call For Papers: Lusophone And Hispanic Visions

The University of Kansas Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies invites comparative papers about Lusophone and Hispanic cultures that provide a forum for the conversation that generates when the aforementioned is examined. A variety of perspectives are encouraged, such as: social critique, (de)colonial studies, self-expression, queer theory, and other epistemologies. They invite abstract submissions of 250-450 words in English, Portuguese and Spanish to graspkuspan@ku.edu.

Submission deadline is March 19, 2021.

2021 CLASP Junior Faculty Teaching Award

The Consortium of Latin American Studies Programs (CLASP) calls for nominations for its ninth annual “CLASP Junior Faculty Teaching Award.” The award recognizes excellence in teaching Latin American Studies designated courses. Nominees must have a Ph.D., and they must be currently teaching at a CLASP member institution. Nominations are accepted through March 15th, 2021. The winner will be announced at the CLASP Business Meeting at the Latin American Studies Association International Virtual Congress (May 26-29, 2021). The winner receives an engraved trophy and $500 and will be asked to participate in future selection processes and contribute to the Teaching Resources on the CLASP website.

Spring BookBox 3 Spots Are Open!

The Center for Latin American Studies is holding a Virtual Spring BookBox Series for K-12 educators. There are still spots available for the third BookBox! This installment will focus on indigenous populations in Latin America in children’s literature and will start on Thursday, March 18, 2021. Each Thursday, from 5-6:30/7pm, we will discuss one of the selected books (five in total) and ways Latin American-centered children's books can be used in the classroom. This program runs 8 weeks long and teachers can earn 13 contact hours/1.3 CEUS for their participation, as well as a possible $100 for a completed lesson plan (with corrections, should that be needed).

Spanish and Portuguese K-12 Pronunciation Workshops

The Center for Latin American Studies is excited to host two virtual workshops for both Spanish and Portuguese K-12 educators on Friday, March 19! Teachers who participate will receive 2 contact hours or .2 CEUs. The deadline to submit an application for registration is Friday, March 12. Space is limited, so apply now!

• The Spanish K-12 Pronunciation Workshop will be led by Paloma Pinillos Chávez, PhD candidate in Hispanic Linguistics, Department of Spanish and Portuguese, The Ohio State University.
• The Portuguese K-12 Pronunciation Workshop will be led by André Zampaulo, Professor of Spanish and Portuguese Linguistics at California State University, Fullerton.
