DEVELOPMENT

At The 78, roadway & DPI move forward
The state recently released $23.5 million in design and planning funds for the $250 million 500,000-square-foot Discovery Partners Institute that will be built in The 78. DPI is a University of Illinois project focused on training for high-demand tech jobs. The state also announced the selection of Dallas-based design and consulting firm Jacobs and OMA-AMO, a Rotterdam architectural firm whose partners include Rem Koolhaas, to design the DPI building. Koolhaas is best known in Chicago for IIT's McCormick Tribune Campus Center.

The new Wells-Wentworth roadway through the site nears completion (though probably not opening to the public).  Street trees were placed last week, and work has finally begun on a new railroad underpass near Ping Tom Memorial Park.  In late October, the contractor posted this drone video of the new street.

2423 S State
Construction permits have been issued for a five-story residential building here. Owner City Pads plans nine units with a co-living layout. Other features will include a roof deck and accompanying pergola, a six-foot masonry trash enclosure, and five outside parking spaces.

South Loop Development Roundup
A reminder: Our Sept. 16 online meeting covered the development and planning issues active in the neighborhood. If you weren't able to attend, you can view the entire presentation on YouTube.

Live Local - Shop Local
The South Loop is a vibrant neighborhood and as it continues to grow, it becomes increasingly more important for residents to support local small businesses. The benefits of shopping local are documented through a number of studies.

South Loop Neighbors especially urges residents to shop at local businesses that have partnered with the South Loop Neighbors as Community Builders. Community Builders are businesses that are members of the SLN and who recognize that a partnerships between SLN and local businesses creates an optimal environment for our neighborhood to maintain and increase the vibrancy of the South Loop! Please visit our website to learn more about our Community Builders.

Community Builder Spotlight
Friends of the Park

One of South Loop Neighbors Community Builders is Friends of the Park. Over the course of time, there have been a number of volunteers who come out every week during the Spring, Summer and Fall, absent inclement weather. These volunteers silently give their time, cleaning and maintaining the park for the benefit of all. Many have become members of the newly formed Printer Row Park Advisory Council, and have continued their diligence and volunteer work in keeping the park sparkling!

On behalf of all the residents in the community - THANK YOU!
