Lessons From Our Current Challenges

Dear VOS family,

I am writing to you from the "social distancing bunker" of The Palmer Family home ... the same sort of bunker that many of you are now all too familiar with. While the tragic path and trajectory of the COVID-19 pandemic is sobering, I hope you'll indulge me as I look for some silver lining amidst our challenges. Our present circumstances and conditions remind us of the importance of caring for ourselves, our family and our community. I'm also reminded of the foundational importance of scientific discovery and its impact upon our world. Finally, such a global concern reminds us that what we share (not just viruses) is far greater than what separates us.

As I've been struggling to help others learn under the conditions of physical separation, I am struck by the value of face-to-face relationships and the power that it lends to both the teacher and the learner. I'm guessing that neither Socrates nor Halsted would have relished our current state. For that matter, I doubt that Dr. Jacques Jenny would ever have had the inclination to coax Dr. George Goudy into launching the first VOS meeting held in 1974 (for the record, that conversation, of course, took place on a chair lift). Instead, I gather that each of them would very much look forward to the in-person, human-ness of our next gathering in Big Sky, Montana.

We've been working feverishly with Dane Johnston and his conference planning team based at NCSU. The NCSU team has been actively engaged with your VOS Board of Directors in order to make your VOS as strong as ever. I am confident that NCSU's expertise and professionalism combined with their sincere dedication to the people and ideals of the VOS will be felt by conference attendees, exhibitors and sponsors in 2021. I think you will be impressed by the conference registration / housing reservations portal that you will soon discover on the VOS website (www.vosdvm.org). Your use of the portal for your Big Sky lodging needs will strengthen your VOS like never before as lodging room commissions will be returned to the VOS and that will help us keep our costs down.

Mark your calendars now for the 48th Annual VOS conference to be held March 13-20, 2021 at Big Sky Resort in Big Sky, Montana. Big Sky is a consistent favorite among VOS members - no surprise given that "The Biggest Skiing in America" boasts of 400 inches of powder falling upon 5,850+ skiable acres and 4,350 vertical feet. Big Sky Resort, in fact, has the most consistent snowfall in the northern Rockies so you can count on excellent conditions on those 300+ runs. Ride the Lone Peak Tram to 11,166' elevation for a 300-degree view of 3 states and 2 national parks; breathtaking to see and ski! Others might enjoy the nationally ranked cross-country ski trails, daily snowshoeing, snowmobile and snowcoach tours, dog sledding, sleigh rides, ziplining or world class fly-fishing.

Dr. Ross Palmer
Let me close by wishing wellness for each of you. Remember to smile, wash your paws regularly and, if you're a face toucher, consider wearing an E. collar (I'm sure your dog would be happy to remind you that "it's for your own good").
