Thomas Henry Huxley (1825-1895), the patriarch of the family, was a zoologist, comparative anatomist, and friend of Charles Darwin. His grandsons include Aldous Huxley (1894-1963), the novelist and author of Brave New World and The Doors of Perception, and his brother, Sir Julian S. Huxley, (1987-1975), a biologist, eugenicist, and the first director of UNESCO. Sir Julian's wife was Lady Juliette Huxley (1896-1994, née Mairie Juliette Baillot), a Swiss-French sculptor and writer. Elspeth Huxley (1907-1997) was a polymath, writer, journalist, broadcaster, magistrate, environmentalist, farmer, and government advisor, best known for her lyrical books The Flame Trees of Thika and The Mottled Lizard which were based on her experiences growing up in a coffee farm in Colonial Kenya. Her husband, Gervas Huxley, was a grandson of Thomas Huxley and a cousin of Aldous Huxley.

Étienne Gilson was a French Catholic philosopher, scholar, and an internationally renowned historian of ideas. A scholar of medieval philosophy, he originally specialised in the thought of Descartes, yet also philosophized in the tradition of Thomas Aquinas, although he did not consider himself a Neo-Thomist philosopher. In 1946 he attained the distinction of being elected an "Immortal" (member) of the Académie francaise. He was one of the most eminent international scholars of the 20th century and was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature.

Sir Francis Robert Benson was an English actor-manager. He founded his own company in 1883 with an emphasis on Shakespeare's plays. Das Schicksal der Atomforscher, was the first published account of the Manhattan Project and the German atomic bomb project.

1810. [20pp. with blank on recto of docket p.20] 20cm x 32cm (7-3/4 x 12-5/8 inches) A unique, rare and important piece of Canadian military history.

This is the official 20 page 1810 report on the Court Martial of Private Alexander Waddle, at Fort George in Upper Canada.

Presided over and signed by Brigadier General Isaac Brock, President, and military commander of Upper Canada and soon to become the 'hero of Upper Canada' Counter-signed by the Governor of Canada, Sir James Henry Craig. Autograph Letter signed, "Wilfrid Laurier," dated Arthabaskaville, 2 Oct. 1875, addressed to Henry James Morgan. 43 lines in French on 3 octavo pages, fine condition. Laurier is writing his friend Morgan confirming requests made to Laurier and confirming positive results on these requests. As well, Laurier is profusely thanking Morgan for the present of "state trials" (most likely the Report of the State Trials on the 1838-39 Canadian Rebellion). Sir Guy Carleton served in America beginning in 1758. He was governor of Quebec and commander of British forces in Canada (1775-77), during which time he repelled Montgomery and Benedict Arnold's attack on Quebec, defeated Arnold on Lake Champlain and re-took Crown Point. circa 1760. Very early edition. This hand-coloured engraving was trimmed to the edges 295mm x  448mm  ( 11-5/8 x 17-5/8 inches) and mounted to a dark card stock. The English only title was mounted on the reverse on the reverse of the dark mounted card.  The trimmed mounted engraving has wear to the corners causing some minor rounding.  There is surface dirt and soiling on the engraving more so on the sky area.
