Important Message from Serra High School
Dear Serra Community,

As a school community, we are deeply saddened by the recent events across the United States.

The death of George Floyd, brutality captured on video, was difficult to absorb. The country is now experiencing the reactions -- from peaceful protest to violence.  Collectively, we shudder.  We again face the issue of racism and violence that this country has struggled with since its founding.

As a Catholic community, we are challenged to fight against all forms of racism and violence.  The Catholic Bishops issued a statement that challenges us to see that,  "Racism is not a thing of the past or simply a throwaway political issue to be bandied about when convenient. It is a real and present danger that must be met head on." (USCCB)

Serra is a community of faith, wisdom, service, leadership and ultimately unity.  We are united as Padres, brothers and community members who support what is right and seek solutions to rectify what is unjust. We stand for our common humanity. We are a diverse community, representing differing faiths and ethnicities.  We stand for one another, in peace and in faith.  These values are embedded in our definition of brotherhood where we seek to develop men of respect, integrity, inclusion and compassion.

These values take on additional meaning in times of challenge.  We are called not just to use the words, but to act at all times in support of justice.  This begins with our own self-reflection and to see that, in the words of Martin Luther King Jr., "an injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere."  Let us recommit ourselves to our core values, to pray for all of those impacted by violence, and to create a world characterized by justice.

Sincerely,

Charlie McGrath
