Member Reflection: Hamza Bakhtiar, AmeriCorps Member
with Partners for Afterschool Success (PASS)

"When asked to comment on my year of service with AmeriCorps, I am tempted to narrate it as a collection of stories. Stories of the students I have worked with and how these stories have changed my views of myself and others. However, it would be contrite to claim enlightenment on life from a few stories along my yearlong journey. Those stories can never fully paint the relationships I have made this year and how they have reshaped my understanding of the idea of
'service.'

When I first came to La Follette High School I was eager to help the students who I was working with. I tried hard to excel at tutoring. I even remember the distinct pride I felt when a literacy student of mine excitedly told me that he had passed his English class. I was making tangible impacts on the lives of my students. Service work had never felt so real. However, today I realize that my first real act of service was much more subtle than I had previously thought. It was when I approached a student sitting on our couch and asked him the simple question, "How was your weekend?"
