WXIR's Frequency Radio zooms in on youth issues

Zoom screen capture of a meeting
RCTV''s John Watson and Baden Street's Cara Brown work with a group of youth on a radio program called Frequency Radio.

Up until the Coronavirus, they've met at RCTV and produced the show in the studios of 100.9 WXIR. Beginning this month, they'll be producing the show through Zoom. The students will send John the music they want to use as part of their show, and after they record the Zoom episode, John will edit the music into the program.

"It's interesting doing our meetings through Zoom," John shared, "because a lot of the kids don't want to share their screens."

Because the Zoom technology, which is a tool to record a video confernce call, is so different from working in the studio, the group will plan to start creating one show per month, coming up with youth-relevant questions in advance that include discussions on work, siblings, computers, dating in the time of coronavirus, and more.

The students were open to participating in a new multi-generational radio show that RCTV/100.9 WXIR is planning to launch in which Rochester residents of varying ages will weigh in on topics that affect everyone during the COVID-19 pandemic.
