Domestic Violence Awareness Month 2019

It's  hard  to  believe Dome stic Violence Awareness & Prevention Month (DVAM) 2019 is here! In an effort to highlight all of the amazing work happening around the state, and to help boost the efforts of our members and allies working to raise awareness, we've compiled  DVAM social media strategies online toolkits and resources , and a   calendar of events  occurring both around the state and nation. Thank you to everyone for the tremendous dedication you have to this movement, and we look forward to another great year of creating social change!

PARTICIPATING IN SOCIAL MEDIA CAMPAIGN socialmedia
Here are a few ways to use your social media presence to raise awareness about domestic violence and the impact it has on our communities, our state, and around the world.

  • Kickoff your DVAM with the National Resource Center on Domestic Violence Call for Unity. Watch this video that several advocates across the country share their plans for domestic violence awareness month.
  • Change your social media profile and cover photos to Purple ribbons and other domestic violence awareness signs, slogans, and statistics that reflect your local work.
  • Wear Purple for #PurpleThursday on October 24th and post photos of you and your friends, family, neighbors and colleagues wearing purple to raise awareness! Check out NYSCADV Facebook and Twitter feeds as we re-share pictures and posts from advocates.
  • The  #1thing campaign from the National Resource Center on Domestic Violence (NRCDV) helps individuals and communities to articulate and understand how our collective "one things" can lead to the social transformation we all desire to see. Follow  @NRCDV and join the conversation on Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr and Facebook
  • Check out the Domestic Violence Awareness Project's DVAM Readiness Checklist. Make sure you will stay organized, focused and on task by reminding you to take care of those tasks that have priority and providing you with ideas and resources that will ensure that your event is a success.
  • Listen to "My #1thing," storytelling podcast series on NRCDV Radio; NRCDV's Stories of Transformation podcast station features the unique perspectives of advocates, survivors, and other community members who have been impacted by and/or are working to end gender-based violence. Stories will offer "one thing" as a strategy for shedding light on the value of each action and the invaluable role we all play in creating the world we wish to live in.
RESOURCES & TOOLKITStoolkits
National Resource Center on Domestic Violence (NRCDV)

This year, the Domestic Violence Awareness Project (DVAP) brings a unified message to #DVAM2019 that moves people from awareness to action and inspires thinking about how individuals can take small steps that lead to real social change. The #1Thing theme offers the opportunity for individuals and organizations to gather around a national unified message for DVAM and beyond. Throughout the month of October, the DVAP and its collaborative partners will be sharing personal and organizational #1Thing messages that advance action for social change. We invite you to participate by sharing what #1Thing inspires you.

Individuals and organizations can incorporate the #1Thing message into their own awareness activities campaigns by utilizing the tips and tools outlined in the  #1Thing Action Guide.

Follow this link for  NRCDV's 2019 DVAM Toolkit.  NRCDV has also put together a nationwide calendar of events for DVAM, campaign ideas, training resourcesawareness highlights, and ArtWork which are available in four languages.

Technology Safety: Best Practices for Serving Survivors of Technological Abuse Webinar

Friday, September 27, 2019  10:00-11:00 AM EST Or
Thursday, October 3, 2019  11:00 am - 12:00 PM EST

For most of us, information technology is a central part of not only our day-to-day professional affairs, but our personal lives as well. An unfortunate side effect is that perpetrators of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse have turned to technology as yet another vehicle to prey on victims. But technology can also serve as a valuable resource for victims to maintain their contacts and seek help. Advocates who serve victims directly can empower them by providing accurate, user-friendly information about how they can use technology to protect themselves. In addition, technology can make it easier for advocates to secure the identity and privacy of victims with whom they come into contact. NYSCADV has developed this training to reach a broad audience.

Regardless of their technological proficiency, participants in this training will come away with an increased understanding of trauma-informed, survivor-centered services in the digital world. We will cover:
  • How victims can use technology to stay safe;
  • How abusers misuse technology to stalk, harass, and threaten victims;
  • Strategies to safety plan with victims and preserve evidence for potential investigations;
  • The development and implementation of agency-level policies and practices that foster a confidential, safe space for survivors.

Objectives:
  • Increase overall understanding of technology safety issues
  • Identify best practices for agencies to maintain a confidential and safe space for victims
  • Provide safety planning techniques for advocates working with victims
  • Provide an overview of tools victims can use to protect themselves

Who benefits from the workshop:
NYSCADV's materials will benefit service providers directly and will also benefit the victims they serve. Providers will be able to identify areas that need improvement in their own technology practices and protocol and how to address it. Advocates will be prepared to assist victims in confronting and preventing technological abuse.

Who Should Attend:
Registration is limited to domestic violence service providers Only.
