MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Susan Photo 5.png

It’s hard to believe it’s been a year since the George Hull Centre was visited by the Premier of Ontario and received a commitment from him for new annualized ministry funding to enhance program delivery and hire new clinicians. I wanted to share with you what we have been able to accomplish with this new funding.

In 2021 the George Hull Centre successfully hired and trained a new team made up of one manager and four clinicians working out of our community clinic (outpatient care). The addition of this team has resulted in many more children accessing timely mental health services and fewer children on our waitlist.

We also submitted a successful joint proposal with Central Toronto Youth Services (CTYS) to receive funding to enhance programming to Black Etobicoke youth through the R.I.T.E.S. Collaborative. The R.I.T.E.S. Collaborative combines the knowledge and expertise held by CTYS in relation to Black youth and Anti-Black Racism (ABR) practices, and the well-known and respected clinical excellence of the George Hull Centre. Two new clinicians were hired at GHC to support this collaboration.

Lastly, we also received new funding to develop the Brief Services Expansion project which supports training and development for partner agencies wishing to develop a 3-8 session model of brief/short term intervention. Brief services support children with short-term and solution-focused therapy resulting in more children getting the help they need in a timely fashion.

It’s been an incredibly busy time for us but that also means we are helping more children and families get the support they so desperately need. Enjoy the newsletter!

PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT

The George Hull EarlyON Centre is pleased to announce in person classes and the release of a new online parenting videos series!

The EarlyON Centre invites parents and children from birth to six years of age to learn and play together! We have numerous resources that encourage family bonding in a warm, nurturing, fun learning environment and are available free of charge at locations across the city.

EarlyON organizers are excited to be welcoming families back in person to our Ronson Drive and Highfield Centres, with more to come! For those caregivers that are more comfortable participating from home, we offer several online options including our wonderful EarlyON Parenting Video Series.

In the videos, GHC staff members speak about stress in adults, kids and stress, the importance of self-care, and more. Each video is approximately 12 minutes in length, so easily digestible and informative. We hope you will take the time to watch them and share with friends and family!

To learn more about our EarlyON programs please visit their website and Facebook page for more information about our offerings as well as updates on locations re-opening soon.

Helping children and families in Etobicoke feel heard, understood, and supported.

On April 1, 2022, Karen Mighty started in the newly created role of Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Karen's dedication to the centre and to the issues that face the Black community and other marginalized communities is clearly demonstrated by her passion and commitment she has shown over her 25-year career with the George Hull Centre. During our interview Karen shared her excitement about continuing to move the centre forward in this important work, and to ensuring that the ideals of Equity, Inclusion and Anti-Black Racism are kept front and centre in all that we do.

“With our agency goals and outstanding leadership and colleagues I look forward to this meaningful work - the journey is not a sprint but a marathon with many challenges and successes.” Karen stated.

A proud mom to 3 children. Karen also believes in supporting charities that focus on autism services such as Autism Ontario. Using her sense of humour and strong relationship building skills, Karen is excited to take on this new role, ensuring that the George Hull Centre continues to be a place where all children and families in Etobicoke feel heard, understood, and supported.

CHILDREN'S MENTAL HEALTH WEEK

Exciting things coming your way!

The first week of May is Children's Mental Health Week. The past two and a half years have been difficult for so many, and children are no exception. During Children’s Mental Health Week, the George Hull Centre will shine a light on the crisis that is children's mental health.

Did you know; one in five children and youth under the age of 19 in Ontario has a mental health diagnosis. This means that at any time, almost 20% of students in an ‘average’ classroom will be dealing with some type of mental health issue – making it difficult for them to learn and behave appropriately. Children whose mental health issues are left untreated may be disruptive in class, bully other students, earn poor grades and drop out early - all strongly associated with mental health concerns.

COMMUNITY SUPPORT

Thank you to SJC Media for awarding GHC

the Giuseppina Gagliano Family Wellness Grant

We are very grateful to SJC Media for awarding the George Hull Centre the Giuseppina Gagliano Family Wellness Grant. This grant honours the legacy of the company’s matriarch by supporting organizations devoted to family well-being. We are proud to be recognized for the work we do supporting the mental health of children and families. SJC’s grant will allow us to shine a spotlight on the continuing crisis facing children's mental health.

This generous grant includes a $2,000 donation and two full-page print advertisements which will appear in two of Canada’s leading magazines- Toronto Life and Chatelaine. This exciting opportunity aims to spark a conversation among families, professionals, supporters, and change-makers. In doing so, it will increase the chance for children and youth to experience a better childhood and enjoy a healthier future.

Thank you SJC Media; your donation will truly help change the lives of the children and families served at the George Hull Centre.
