Discovery High School Earns Model Continuation High School Award

Discovery High School is among the top continuation high schools in all of California in helping students to graduate and prepare for the next chapter of their lives after graduation. The announcement came Friday, February 21, 2020, that Discovery was 1 of 43 schools in the state to earn the 2020 Model Continuation High School Award. "This award is a testimony to the perseverance and ownership exhibited by the Discovery High School staff members," said Keven MacDonald, Executive Director of Alternative Learning.  "Their dedication to supporting every aspect of our students and willingness to extend themselves beyond the classroom provides students with the inspiration, confidence, and skill set to achieve beyond their expectations."

Introducing Aziyah and Mayukh, winners of NUSD's Black History Month Contest!
Meet Aziyah, winner of Natomas Unified School District's Black History Month Essay Contest! Aziyah wrote an essay on African American STEM Inventor George Washington Carver, who invented over 300 products using peanuts. Wow! Aziyah is in 6th grade at American Lakes School. His influential essay won him two tickets to the Sacramento Kings game. Congratulations Aziyah!
Meet Mayukh, 4th-grade student at Natomas Park Elementary. We are very proud to share that Mayukh is the winner of Natomas Unified School District's Black History Month Poster Contest! Mayukh created a poster on African American STEM Inventor, Lonnie George Johnson, who created the Super Soaker. The poster he created, which displayed colorful photos along with neatness and excellent penmanship, won him two tickets to the Sacramento River Cats! Congratulations Mayukh! 
Nutrition Services Department goes above and beyond for students

The Board recognized NUSD Nutrition Services Department at the Wednesday, February 26, 2020, Board Meeting for their outstanding work in connecting kids with the nutritious meals needed to succeed and as a 2019 No Kid Hungry California Food Champion.

No Kid Hungry released an article on December 16, 2019 of 10 California Champions Working to Make No Kid Hungry a Reality. The article acknowledged the accomplishments made, across the state, with whom have made "serious progress in connecting kids with the nutritious meals they need to succeed." NUSD's Nutrition Services department ranked #7 on the list and was recognized as one of the champions for work with the "The Lunch Box" our food truck. The Lunch Box continues to be used to serve, promote and provide healthy breakfast and lunch meals during the summer months, as well as special events such as Picnic at the Capitol and Farm to Fork Festival.

Thank you Nutrition Services Department for continually providing our student's with quality nutritious meals and exceptional service throughout the school year and thereafter.
NUSD celebrates Women's History Month

Women's History Month is a time to celebrate women's achievements, to reflect on the future, to remember how gender roles have changed through the years, and to pay tribute to incredible women like Susan B. Anthony, Harriet Tubman, Amelia Earhart, Rosa Parks, Eleanor Roosevelt, Gloria Steinem, Sally Ride, Bella Abzug, Dolores Huerta, and many more.

Join us throughout Women's History Month as we pay tribute and celebrate women trailblazers past and present. 
Natomas Schools Foundation Accepting Applications for 2020 Scholarships

The Natomas Schools Foundation (NSF) is proud to announce its annual scholarship program. In 2020 the NSF will be offering scholarships to students who attend high school in the Natomas Unified School District. We are offering multiple scholarships of $1,000 each for high school seniors and multiple scholarships of $500.
NUSD recognized for AVID students outperforming the national average

We have much to celebrate in Natomas Unified School District after learning that 100% of our graduates in the class of 2019, who were a part of our AVID program at Inderkum High School, met four-year college entrance requirements and outperformed students across the nation with 88% taking at least one Advanced Placement (AP) Exam compared to the national average of 39%. "The students, with the encouragement and support of their AVID teachers, do all the work, and it is great to see their efforts recognized. We have a strong and devoted team of teachers and a counselor to help our students succeed," said Jacquie Freitas, coordinator of AVID at Inderkum High School. Freitas learned of the good news and her student's performance on Friday, February 21, after the information was shared nationally by AVID. She said, "It is simply an honor to be the coordinator of the program, and the recognition simply adds to that honor."
High School Students: Apply now for 'Closing the Digital Divide' Scholarship Program

To encourage and empower children to realize their full potential, Board President Lisa Kaplan and her husband, B.G.  Heiland are proud to present the Kaplan4kids "Closing the Digital Divide" scholarship to outstanding students  overcoming adversity who are currently enrolled at Leroy Greene Academy, Natomas High School, Inderkum High  School, or Discovery High School. Foster youth, homeless, and those who demonstrate financial need are strongly  encouraged to apply. Completed applications must be received by March 16, 2020 (4:30 p.m.) to be eligible or  postmarked by March 13th.

As a part of the district vision to prepare students for college and careers, the Natomas Unified School District provides the SAT to all 11th graders at Inderkum High, Natomas High, Discovery High, and Leroy Greene Academy, free of charge, during the school day on March 4.
