May 2022 Shootings in Buffalo, Uvalde, Elsewhere

Family physicians mourn losses while also helping their communities

The epidemic of mass shootings continues, with horrifying violence this month alone in Buffalo, NY, Uvalde, TX and many other communities. The FMEC stands with those in mourning and recognizes the role that family physicians in those communities and everywhere must play in responding to gun violence, through advocacy, research, education, and helping the families they treat through difficult times. The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) has developed a position paper encouraging a public health approach to preventing gun violence, and FMEC members may find other resources linked below helpful in supporting their communities to respond to and prevent violence.

Let Navigate help with loan debt

Meet Dr. Sarah Ines Ramirez, FMEC Board of Trustees Member, and Student Loan Owner

Need some inspiration? Meet Sarah. She’s a surgically-trained family medicine physician who completed an obstetrics fellowship. Currently, Sarah is an academic family physician at Penn State Health Hershey Medical Center in Pennsylvania. Like so many physicians, Sarah’s student loans were sizable. She accepted that as “part of the deal” when she completed her training.

Sarah's mindset changed when she and Joy Sorensen Navarre, president of Navigate Student Loans, analyzed her loans last fall. First, Joy determined that Sarah had a significant refund owed to her from one lender. Joy told her exactly how to recoup it. Now, they are working on student loan forgiveness with the new Limited Waiver Option. According to Sarah, “All the loans were confusing, but Joy makes you feel like you matter. She is validating. With Joy, you get a feeling like you’re not alone. I’ve talked to financial advisors in the past. There was no personal connection...Joy’s validation is so rare.”
