Message from Pastor Tim

Dear Friends and Members of the Ark and Dove Community,

And so summer for families with children and college students has come to a sudden end and schedules shift for many into high gear.  I can still remember that feeling in my stomach as a young person, on those first days of school; a mix of butterflies and excitement all rolling around in newness and change. I am holding our children, youth and young adults in my prayers and parents too.  We sure are in a different place this August than the last two.

As for Ark and Dove, we will begin Sunday School September 11, and we are in the process of calling leaders for our Middle and High School programs. We have not had Sunday School for grades 6 -12 in two years and our prayerful intention is to get back on track. We are in the hunt for a paid Interim Director of Youth Ministry to work with our Interim Associates and our Christian Education Elder to coordinate programs for youth.  If you know of someone who might be interested in this paid part time interim position, please contact me.

As for worship at Ark and Dove, We are going to stick with 9:00 and 10:30 worship at least until Christmas and see what all these changes bring. Nursery care and Sunday School through grade five will be provided at both services assuming we get the adult leadership. Many hands makes work light.  We will keep you posted on youth ministry. Masks are required for 9:00 AM and masks are encouraged but optional for 10:30 worship. And as always while living in the whirlwind of endemic/pandemic, we will maintain our open hearts and nimble spirits.

Our Associate Pastor Nominating Team had a getting to know each other meeting last night and soon they will have an orientation meeting with Elder Julia Schaeffer of the Frederick Presbyterian Church to help ready them for their important work.  Elder Schaeffer serves on the Commission on Ministry of the Presbytery of Baltimore and she will be a great resource to us in this time of searching.

I hope you will join me in your private devotions with praises and thanksgivings for the many dedicated teachers and school employees we have in our community.

In Christ,

Tim

Verse and Prayer

Let mutual affection continue. Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing it. Remember those who are in prison, as though you were in prison with them, those who are being tortured, as though you yourselves were being tortured.

Hebrews 13:1-3

O Thou who has ordered this wondrous world and who knowest all things in earth and heaven: So fill our hearts with trust in thee that by night and by day, all times and in all seasons, we may without fear commit ourselves and those who are dear to us to thy never-failing love, for this life and the life to come. Amen.

from the Presbyterian Book of Common Prayer – 1946

Have you thought about being a part of our choir? We are kicking off our Fall season beginning next week, September 1st. We rehearse on Thursdays from 7:00-8:30 in the sanctuary. This would be a great week for you to begin, or just come and observe if you'd like to see what it's all about. I will give out the new music through the end of the year, along with the schedule.

This Sunday, I will sing Audrey Assad's I Shall Not Want. Shout out to Kristen Hitchcox for telling me about this piece. It is a beautiful, meditative and contemplative prayer, based on the words from Psalm 23 The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. I will be joined by Brittany Wellington, Karen Dodson and Fred Barrow.

Have a wonderful week, friends.

With love,

Rebecca

LOGOS is Coming Soon!

Registration is open now for the upcoming LOGOS year. Click HERE to register.

LOGOS is Ark and Dove's midweek children's program for ages Pre-K through 5th grade that engages our youth in the life of the church, providing opportunities to learn about God, to have fun, and to create lasting relationships with others. This year it will be held on Tuesday evenings from 6:00pm to 7:15pm starting September 27th through the end of March. On the third Tuesday of every month we will provide a family-style dinner for LOGOS kids, their families, and other volunteers at 6:20pm.

One of the LOGOS core goals is to facilitate the development of strong Christian relationships between youth and between generations. With that in mind, we ask that at least one adult from each registered family sign up to volunteer. There are lots of different opportunities for participation this year, including some that are only once a month, check out our sign up genius HERE. We would LOVE to have other members of the church volunteer as well including our older youth and seniors! Save the date for our LOGOS Information Forum and Volunteer Training on September 13th 6pm-7pm via zoom. Email logos@arkanddove.org for any questions.

Mission

Refugee Resettlement: Abawi Family

As the Abawi family settle into their new home, we can then concentrate on the many other ways we can support this family. As they find employment in the near future along with the many health appointments they have, both the Annapolis Presbyterian Church and Ark and Dove are asking if you, or anyone you may know, have any vehicle that can be donated to the Abawi family. Please reach out to Debbie Arey at debarey@hotmail.com.

Annapolis Run for the Light House

Let's get together on September 18th and participate as a team to support the Light House! We can walk, jog, or run. (I'll be walking!!) Let Lori know if you are interested and sign up HERE. It will be fun and we will be supporting one of our favorite local organizations!
Anti-Racism

Together We Win

In her book, The Sum of Us - What Racism Costs Everyone and How We Can Prosper Together, Heather McGhee addresses the dysfunction in our democracy and the spiritual and moral dilemmas we face. She focuses on the "zero-sum paradigm" - the idea that progress for some of us comes at the expense of others and the "Solidarity Dividend" - what we accomplish and gain when we unite across race. Recently SURJ Annapolis held a zoom interview with the author that is a great introduction to the book.

As we prepare for door knocking, meeting neighbors, and for the upcoming election in November, the book is helpful in understanding those who may have strong differing opinions on policy issues or the banners we display. I encourage you to watch this one hour recording of A SURJ Webinar and consider reading the book. We hope to schedule a discussion on the book in the fall.
