"Traveling the Road"
by the Reverend Deborah A. Lee
As we approach Palm Sunday and the beginning of Holy Week we carry within our hearts and minds the recent tragedies of gun violence. The eighteen victims of the Atlanta and Boulder shootings, the 137 killed in coordinated attacks in the country of Niger, the more than 250 civilian deaths following a military coup in Myanmar—these weigh heavily upon our souls.

Cross and Crown: Picturing the Death of Jesus in Early Christian Art
Yale faculty member Felicity Harley-McGowan looks at artistic depictions of Jesus’ crucifixion in early Christianity. The Forum will be streamed on our website, Facebook Live and YouTube.

The kingdom that Jesus preached and lived was all about a glorious, uproarious, absurd generosity.
—N.T. Wright, Luke for Everyone

As we approach the miraculous gift of Easter, let us think about our response and the power of transformational generosity—both receiving and giving. Giving back to the One who first gave is an act of faith and absurd generosity. We are so very grateful for your faith in the work we do.
MEET US AFTER CHURCH

for a list of groups meeting after church each week.
Newcomers welcome to all groups!

HOLY WEEK AND EASTER
For Christians, the week leading up to Easter is the holiest of the year. From Palm Sunday (March 28) to Easter Day (April 4), we journey with Jesus from his initial entry into Jerusalem to his final meal with his companions, his anguish on the Cross, and the victory of the empty tomb. Throughout Holy Week 2021, we will offer a variety of ways to engage virtually. We hope you will join us for as many of these opportunities as possible. See the complete schedule here.

FORMATION OPPORTUNITIES

Easter Week Break
Adult Formation programs, including Centering Prayer, will take a break in the week after Easter to allow our staff and parishioners some well-deserved time off. A new group of classes will begin the week of April 11.
Tuesdays, April 13-May 4, 6:30-8 pm
Musicologist and singer Kerry McCarthy, PhD, who recently wrote authoritative biographies of Thomas Tallis and William Byrd, outlines the development of English choral music during the pivotal Tudor Period.
Thursdays, April 15-May 6, 6:30-8 pm
The Jesus movement arose in the hills of Galilee, but quickly established itself in the large cities of the Mediterranean. Professor Larry Welborn of Fordham University, a St. Bart’s favorite, explores the lives and relationships of the ordinary believers who joined the churches established by the apostle Paul in Ephesus, Philippi, Thessalonica, and Corinth.

Mondays, February 22 – March 29, 6:30 pm to 7 pm
Lent is a time to “Fast from Anxiety and Feast on Stillness.” Beginners and those “who can’t sit still long” are invited to join us to learn about and to practice this way of taking time to stop your anxious mind. Led by parishioner Kathleen Breiten, this shorter, half hour version of Centering Prayer will explain and demonstrate the benefits of creating inner stillness in your life. Registration is required.

Tuesdays, February 23-March 30, 7-8 pm
Join the Reverend Peter Thompson for a Lenten discussion about Food and Faith: A Theology of Eating by Duke professor Norman Wirzba. Please read Chapter 5 before the next session. (N.B.: Professor Wirzba was our guest at The Forum on Sunday, March 14.)

Saturdays, February 20-April 3, 10-11 AM
As Lent begins, the Saturday morning discussion group turns to the collection Bread and Wine: Readings for Lent and Easter, which features the work of a variety of prominent authors, including Madeleine L’Engle, Frederick Buechner, Barbara Brown Taylor, and Henri Nouwen. Please read "53. The Greatest Drama” by Dorothy Sayers, “56. Waiting for Judas” by Madeleine L’Engle, and “58. Jesus’ Reminders” by Philip Yancey.

Wednesdays at 1 pm
Thoughtful reflection and lively discussion of the upcoming Sunday readings, hosted by the Right Reverend Dean E. Wolfe. To join our Weekly Bible Study online, please contact Liz Gillespie.
