Sales Tax Audits Raise Questions
Several IDA members have reported undergoing recent sales tax audits by the Indiana Department of Revenue. Is your office in compliance of the items that incur state sales tax? The following items, taken directly from the Indiana Sales Tax Bulletin, require sales tax payment in Indiana:

  • All office furniture, equipment and supplies
  • Surgical instruments, equipment and supplies
  • Bandages, splints and all other medical supplies consumed in professional use
  • Materials purchased by dentists to restore teeth or fill cavities
  • Orthodontic supplies, such as bands and wires
  • X-ray, diathermy, diagnostic equipment or any other apparatus used in the practice of surgery or medicine

Contact your accountant or dental supplier/equipment vendor for questions about which of your purchases require sales tax. A link to the full list of Indiana sales tax requirements is linked below.
IDA Leaders Prepare for Strategic Retreat
Next weekend IDA officers, trustees, committee chairs and IDA staff will attend a Leadership Retreat in Bloomington. This retreat is expected to be a productive series of meetings intended to review the IDA Strategic Plan and foster great communication among IDA leaders and constituents. IDA President Dr. Jill Burns will lead the retreat and focus on Relationships, Respect, Reaching Out, and Responsibility, and former ADA Executive Director Kathy O’Loughlin will be facilitating the discussions. A wrap up of the retreat will be included in upcoming IDA communications.

IDA's last Leadership Retreat was in summer 2019. Attendees are picture above.

IDA Leaders Welcome New IUSD Students
Earlier in July, IDA leaders attended the IUSD D1 orientation to welcome new dental students and to introduce them to the IDA and organized dentistry. IDA President Dr. Jill Burns, Executive Director Doug Bush, Assistant Executive Director Jay Dziwlik and IDDS Executive Director Janelle Kramer attended a welcome breakfast for the students. Jay also gave a presentation during orientation week about the IDA and membership benefits to all new students (pictured at top).

In other IUSD news, on July 16 the class of 2024 attended the white coat ceremony, which was cancelled last year because of COVID. IUSD D3 Jonny Hollar was among the students included in the ceremony, and his father, 2021-22 IDA President Dr. Steven C. Hollar (class of 1993), was the speaker. Jonny's grandfather, Dr. Charles Hollar (class of 1964), was also in attendance. The three are pictured above celebrating the first, second and third generation of Hollar dentists. The IDA congratulates all of our current and future colleagues who were in attendance.
