As one of ACPE's efforts to address dynamics of racism and other biases, the Anti-Bias Task Force has created a survey to gather data about the experiences of Educators and CECs in our organization, centers, CPE programs, and work sites.
The results will help inform the creation of our 2021 national conference, as well as the building of anti-bias education for our membership and a review of ACPE policies and procedures.
The survey will be sent out this Wednesday, September 23. Look for it in your email!

After almost 25 years, ACPE upgraded its database. On August 5th, ACPE launched Nimble AMS built on Salesforce. In conjunction with the launch of the new database, ACPE also introduced a new website (a necessary move because the website is built on the database). You can still find us at www.acpe.edu. In 2018, ACPE launched the new Peer Review process for Certified Educators. The new process requires a peer review every three years, which means that if you did not have one in 2018 or 2019, you are due this year! Information about the process may be found on the ACPE Sharepoint site.
The due date for completing the peer review is October 31. If you have questions about the process, please contact Katherine Higgins.

You are invited to submit a workshop proposal for the 2021 ACPE Annual Conference, our first using virtual platforms and online resources, the week of May 3, 2021.
The 2021 ACPE conference theme, Creating Room to Breathe, invites the engagement of all our members with the urgency of this moment. We need all of our wisdom and best approaches as we face into the interlocking pandemics of bias, injustice and COVID-19.
Racial bias in policing and racialized health disparities laid bare by COVID-19 are just two of the global phenomena we are all facing, with local impacts. We in ACPE are uniquely situated to surface and share our local resources across a worldwide network of care providers and spiritual care educators. What can you bring to the virtual table?
Workshops for the 2021 ACPE Annual Conference should engage ACPE's core values and ethos for spiritual care education while addressing bias(es) as they impact our educational settings and the locations where we provide spiritual care and counseling. Particular consideration given to persons developing liberative and resistant knowledge projects. Innovative, tried and true, and research based presentations are welcome. All workshops and workshop resources will need to be formatted for delivery online. Possibilities include virtual "posters," recorded Zoom webinars, facilitators' guides for experiential education - how are you delivering creative and innovative educational experiences?

Our new Certification process began in January 2018. Since its inception, we have welcomed over 100 CECs into the process. We have celebrated the certification of our first aspirants to complete the new process and many more have completed Phase I and are making their way through Phase II.
In our ongoing oversight of the process and to best support centers in their work, the Certification Commission is soliciting successful practices from centers that have helped their CECs succeed and thrive in the Certification process. The Commission will review all submissions and in addition to sharing them with the larger ACPE community in this forum, will also create a CEC Resources Page in SharePoint to share these practices and additional resources. Having a repository of successful practices and resources for Certified Educator Candidates is of prime importance to the Certification Commission. We hope to gather successful, workable, and a nice variety of practices that will help Educators and CECs stay connected during the Certification Process.

It occurs throughout our lives, and most of us spend our years growing in our ability to engage it, reflect upon it, and allow it to help shape us into a more whole and authentic self. This poem invites reflection on how conflict teaches from one who knows it well from his own community.

I
When I was a child,
I learnt to lie.
When I was a child
my parents said that sometimes,
lives are protected
by an undetected
light lie of
deception
When I was a child,
I learnt to lie.
Now, I am more than twenty five
and I'm alive
because I've lied

it's the only way of living.

by obeying certain
rules:
let your anger cool before you
blossom bruises on your brother's shoulder;
always show your manners at the table;
always keep the rules and never question;
never mention certain things to certain people;

you must still even out the score;
and never open up the door.

Lauren Mason is a chaplain serving at Providence St. Mary Medical Center in Walla Walla, WA. She is taking her second unit of CPE through a virtual option with Rev. Dr. Unyong Statwick at Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane, WA. She comes from the Seventh-day Adventist tradition and enjoys singing and walking in nature. Lauren wrote a reflection entitled, "I haven't talked about race in years."

Feast day Mashíyya (Baha'i)
The Baha'i calendar has nineteen months, all named after attributes of God. Mashíyya is the Arabic word for will. The word "feast" suggests that a large meal will be served, but that is not necessary for a Bahá'í Feast. The use of the term "feast," in this case, means that the community should enjoy a "spiritual feast" of worship, fellowship and unity - although refreshments are usually available.
September 28 Yom Kippur (Judaism) The "Day of Atonement" marks the end of the Ten Days of Penitence that began with Rosh Hashanah. A day to ask God for forgiveness for sins and to secure fate. The holiday is observed by fasting from just before sunset until just after nightfall. |

- ACPE Retired Educator Kenneth Blank died on September 13, 2020. He lived in Edmond, Oklahoma with his wife of 42 years, Audrey, and was a father and grandfather. A Celebration of Life will be streamed on Monday, September 21, 2-3 PM (CT), by the First Presbyterian Church of Edmond, Oklahoma.
- ACPE Friend Vernon Kuehn died in Westland, Michigan on December 14th, 2019 at the age of 90. Vernon was born in Evanston, Illinois on December 25th, 1928. He married Janice Carter on May 24, 1952 and celebrated 62 years together until she passed away in March 2015.
