The Vantage Point
Glenda Humiston
Vice President
UC Agriculture and Natural Resources
Across California and the nation, we have seen numerous protests following George Floyd's death. UC President Janet Napolitano and UC Board of Regents Chair John Perez recently issued
a statement
that begins:
"
The tragic deaths of George Floyd, countless other African Americans and people of color, as well as the justified anger and fury in ensuing protests, speak to the institutionalized racism that has plagued this country in the same way it has persistently defined the everyday realities of individuals who face perpetual intolerance, discrimination, marginalization and bigotry. As leaders of the largest public research university in the United States, we feel that silence is complicity: We must put an end to these incidents now.
"
I strongly support this statement and agree with President Napolitano that it is one of UC’s bedrock principles “…that all people are equal, and deserve to be treated fairly and respectfully. We all deserve to live, work and go about our lives without fear."
As stated in our
UC ANR Principles of Community
: “Members of the far-reaching UC ANR community have the right to work in an environment that promotes fairness, trust, respect, and physical and emotional safety and security.” California's strength is its diversity; all of us at UC ANR are committed to serving all segments of the state's population.
As expected, California’s response to the coronavirus pandemic and loss of tax revenues resulting from the disruption in business have dramatically changed the state’s economic outlook. We don’t yet know the final California budget for 2020-2021, but we do know that the California legislature is required to approve a budget by June 15. UC President Janet Napolitano has stated “UC stands with the governor and the legislature to help lift the State out of this economic crisis.”
UC ANR is preparing for the future and not simply responding to the present. Many partners have expressed appreciation and new collaborations have emerged:
We are grateful to our partners for their vote of confidence and the generous funding to generate science-based knowledge to apply on California farms.
Throughout
our pandemic response
, the people of UC ANR have done an exceptional job
to continue to deliver our mission
. We bring the power of the University of California directly to Californians by serving communities in all 58 counties. UC ANR research and education programs support sustainable, safe and nutritious food production and delivery; economic success in a global economy; a sustainable, healthy and productive environment; and science literacy and youth development.
Coming up on June 5 is
Big Dig Day
, a day to dig deep to support the essential services we provide that sustain our state. Gifts of any size will have an immediate impact. Now more than ever, we know the value of community, research and science-based information. In times of crisis and beyond, UC ANR is here to help California move forward.
Love what we do? Help us do it! Thank you for your continued support, and stay safe and healthy!
