Decision Center Has Arrived!
The next stop on the Mid-Hudson Library System ILS Road Map is Decision Center . Decision Center is particularly exciting because it introduces some very new tools for reporting, but it also expands and improves reporting that we depend on today.

Decision Center is a comprehensive collection management and analytics solution that provides library staff with dynamic tools to report, analyze , and make action-oriented decisions and recommendations regarding collection management. Decision Center helps libraries match supply and demand to deliver optimized service by using current and complete data - about circulation, holds, transits, patrons, and acquisitions - Decision Center provides you with actionable insights to help your library improve patron-driven acquisitions while streamlining collection management workflows. Here are two examples of what Decision Center has to offer:

REPORTS BY TITLE
Finally - access to circulation and holds information by Title! One thing we have never been able to report on in Millennium or Sierra is the activity or popularity of a title. Now, you can find out things like what is the most popular title in the system or what items were requested the most. This can be helpful not only to evaluate how your collection is used, but also how to build it.

WEEDING BY NUMBERS
How do you know what should be weeded from your collection? Decision Center is a powerful tool that can help you to determine what should be weeded either because it hasn't gone out much or it has gone out so much that it may be worn. Build your weeding list in

Decision Center reports then use further filtering to make sure you aren't weeding last system copies, expensive titles, or ones that have only just been purchased. You can also base your weeding of an area on how much space you hope to gain on the shelf. Decision Center will tell you the most 'weedable' items within an area. Once your report is fine-tuned, send the list to Sierra as a review file, from there it can be passed to Mobile Worklist to go into the stacks. Staff can determine if the item gets to stay by sorting it into a discard or keep list. Items slated to discard can be managed in a global discard or delete.

Join Thomas O'Connell, MHLS ILP Operations Supervisor to learn all about Decision Center. This workshop will be beneficial to any library staff responsible for gathering statistics, running reports on usage, and making collection development decisions for their library.

MHLS Announcements
The Mid-Hudson Library System has partnered with Bard College and La Voz, a monthly magazine covering culture and news from the Hudson Valley for the Spanish-speaking community, to bring copies of La Voz directly to libraries through the MHLS delivery bins, and promote libraries through in-kind ads that will run in the magazine each month. La Voz seeks to empower its Hudson Valley readers through actionable information featuring columns on health and legal affairs, an English learning worksheet, advice on personal finance, and a resource guide announcing local events and activities. This partnership will enable libraries to provide current resources for the Spanish-speaking members of their communities and highlight the services libraries are currently providing for new audiences. For more information about La Voz, visit https://lavoz.bard.edu/  For questions about this partnership please contact MHLS Library Sustainability Coordinator, Casey Conlin, [email protected]
MHLS Libraries
The Highland Public Library recently held a program called "Not Your Great- Grandmother's Embroidery". Donna Davies, Adult Craft Instructor at the library said, "Our patrons have an unquenchable thirst for craft projects. Embroidery is still quite popular. In this new world of crafting, subject matter knows no bounds. In this program, patrons [had] a select group of designs to choose from that [could] be completed in an hour." Subjects included food emojis, modern line art, sea monsters, superheroes, kawaii and even bats, as demonstrated in the picture above.
Resource Sharing & Sierra
In the third week of March the MHLS cataloging department will suppress all items that have a status of 'Lost & Paid', 'Discard' or 'Claims returned', which have not been updated for 3 months. The items will not be deleted. Changing the annual report code to "n - suppress", simply keeps them from displaying in the public catalog.
Sustainable Libraries
From March 16-20 local Meals on Wheels programs invite local, state and federal officials, local celebrities and other prominent community figures to deliver meals, speak out for seniors and raise awareness for the power of their work. Common partnership activities include delivering or serving meals, hosting a fundraising event, and speaking out on social media. This is a great opportunity for libraries to create or strengthen a partnership with a local organization. To find Meals on Wheels programs in your area please visit
