A "Calm Down Zone" is a room or an area of a room set up for one to go to remain calm or to return to calm.

Some suggestions to have in this space are lots of pillows or large (lovesac)beanbags, weighted blankets, squishy toys, a small tent or fort, bubbles, whistles, stuffed animals. Heavy touch such as bear hugs are calming and light touch such as tickling can be uncomfortable and may further contribute to upsets. Additional tools; Soothing music with quiet slow rythms,

crunchy healthy snacks such as celery or carrots, drinking a thickened item such as a smoothie through a straw. Of course allow for movement breaks throughout the day.

Picture schedules, color coded folders, bins, supplies. Perhaps have a "to do" folder, and a "Completed Work" folder. Sometimes a 3-ring binder or Trapper Binder can be a place to keep all folders together. Folders can also be arranged on a computer. It takes experimenting and trial and error to find a system that works best for you and your child. Encourage your child to participate in creating their organization system.

Remember to enjoy nature with your family and involve your child in activities and tasks such as gardening, raking leaves, shoveling snow, vacuming, hiking, biking, swinging, climbing...all with supervision for safety of course.
