Are You Ready to Become a Member?

If you’ve been attending UUCH long enough to know that this church community feels like your spiritual home, you may be ready to take the next step and become a member of this congregation.

In early October, Rev. Jaimie will welcome new members as they “sign the book” and officially join our church. New members will be recognized during a virtual Sunday service. Due to Covid safety guidelines, we plan to use recorded moments from socially-distanced, individual sessions for each new member where they will sign the membership book and be welcomed to UUCH.

If you are ready to become a member or would like to find out more about the process, please contact Pam Korb as soon as possible, but no later than September 30th.

RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF MEMBERSHIP
Because we are a democratic community, members are collectively vested with responsibility for the congregation. Members may vote at all congregational meetings, be elected to the governing Board, be appointed as committee chairs, and participate in all activities of the congregation. Because we are a covenanted congregation, members have certain responsibilities to the congregation and to each other. These responsibilities are best fulfilled by:
  • Regular attendance at worship
  • Voting at congregational meetings
  • Making financial contributions
  • Contributing time and talent
  • Spiritual growth and development

Donating by Text or Online
To give a plate offering to UUCH from your mobile device, text the amount (without dollar sign) to 833-559-0257, and follow the instructions. Text giving is by debit or credit card only.

Like our other online and mobile giving options, this is through Vanco, is secure, and has a good option for "plate" donations.
To give from your bank account, you can still use the UUCH website or the GivePlus+ mobile app.

Cooking in Hard Times

"The Traveling Onion"
Naomi Shihab Nye — 1952

“It is believed that the onion originally came from India. In Egypt it was an object of worship —why I haven’t been able to find out. From Egypt the onion entered Greece and on to Italy, thence into all of Europe.” — Better Living Cookbook

When I think how far the onion has traveled
just to enter my stew today, I could kneel and praise
all small forgotten miracles,
crackly paper peeling on the drainboard,
pearly layers in smooth agreement,
the way the knife enters onion
and onion falls apart on the chopping block,
a history revealed.
And I would never scold the onion
for causing tears.
It is right that tears fall
for something small and forgotten.
How at meal, we sit to eat,
commenting on texture of meat or herbal aroma
but never on the translucence of onion,
now limp, now divided,
or its traditionally honorable career:
For the sake of others,
disappear.

Care List

This Sunday at our Circle of Candles:

Jack Long lit a candle of joy: I turned 70 on Thursday. Never thought I would make it this far.

Angela Arnold (she/her) lit a candle of joy: Happy Birthday Jack!!!

Kathy Fisher lit a candles of concern: My sister fell and broke her arm in 3 places and will have surgery tomorrow. A student tested positive for the virus. Thankful it was a mild case and that we’re doing lessons online. A friend and colleague, Werner Smock, is on a ventilator in Crestwood hospital, battling the virus and pneumonia. Doak Mansfield, dear friend and former UUCH minister, is in the hospital working his way back from a deep bout of depression.

Angela Arnold (she/her) lit a candle of joy: for the newlyweds everywhere, and especially for Nick and Zac who shared their vows on Zoom yesterday. Wishing them all a lifetime of happiness and love.

Gail and Howard Williams lit a candle of joy: Good to see your smiling face Harper!

Paul & Bridgit DeMoor lit a candle of joy: I am so amazed by the musical talents of this congregation. From the regular pianist to the sweet voices of young and older, the talent is truly awesome.

The Delaceys lit a candle of concern: One of my students tested positive this last week. Grateful he had not come back in person yet.

Jo Broussard lit a candle of concern: Tim DeFrance, my brother, has fully recovered from COVID. Thanks for all the good thoughts. Jeanne & Jo

Gary & Barbara Hitt lit a candle of gratitude: for the life of Ruth Bader Ginsburg and a candle of sorrow for her passing. May her legacy of justice live on.

George Fletcher lit a candle of joy: My daughter Jessica chose a covid-safe way of getting married--she and Erik eloped on Thursday!

Paul & Bridgit DeMoor lit a candle of concern: Too many fires, floods, hurricanes, and now COVID. Prayers for all of us.

Bobby Hall lit a candle of concern: My sister has not been feeling very good for several weeks now. Hopefully her doctor got her drug regimen figured out and she’ll be all better soon!

Daniel McKitrick lit a candle of concern: My friend Shari Phillips passed away yesterday, and I am sad for her partner Barbara now living alone with major medical issues of her own.

LaDawn Edwards lit a candle of concern: My recent visit to Wyoming allowed me to see my sister and check on her physical and mental health. She is getting better care now, but her path forward is long and winding. I'm grateful for the courage her daughter Rachael has demonstrated in making these hard choices.

Eleanor Schweinsberg lit a candle of sorrow: Saddened by the death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

Eleanor Schweinsberg lit a candle of joy: Congratulations to Nick and Zac on their marriage.

Greeter (Pam K) lit a candle of concern: My mom has been having spikes of high blood pressure for the past week or so and is staying with Brad and I until we can get some help from her doctors.

Erin Reid (she/her) & Pam Siegler (she/her) lit a candle of concern: for Ilene Sparks.

Daniel McKitrick lit a candle of joy: Yes, congrats to Nick and Zac!

Denise (she/her) lit a candle of joy: Congratulations on Nick and Zac’s wonderful wedding celebration yesterday.

Denise (she/her) lit a candle of joy: Congratulations to Jessica!

Patti Lovejoy McKee lit a candle of concern: love and healing to Ilene Sparks.

Theresa Miller lit a candle of concern: for those who were affected by the hurricane this past week.

Rita Scholes lit a candle of gratitude: been a very difficult couple of weeks emotionally here in Ohio. Being here on Sundays helps. The love and support you show and give to each other gives me a respite from the chaos. Thank you all.
