Two SCA students win YCteen writing competition
Latavia Dobson '22 and Kymeco Walker '21 took first and third place in the YCTeen magazine writing contest. They competed among hundreds of participants throughout New York City. Their essays were recognized for content, quality, and relatability of their writing.

Latavia's essay was about overcoming a situation that originally left her feeling insecure but as she worked through it she learned about her own self-worth. In the essay, she writes, "I learned that life goes on and I am strong,...I know my worth and respect myself too much."

Surprised by the award, Latavia credits her teacher Roseanna Sahadeo with believing in her enough to encourage her to submit an essay. She says she has a new confidence in her writing now.

Kymeco's essay, "I Now Think Before Judging" speaks about learning from a relationship that changed unexpectedly. Kymeco says she has always kept journals and writes regularly. She too credits Ms. Sahadeo with encouraging her writing. "She helps me improve my writing and I take her advice. It helps. The teachers are here to help you with what you need. You have to be willing to take the extra step."
