PARKS & RECREATION UPDATE

Dear Sterling Heights Residents:

It is with no doubt that we are in unchartered territory as it relates to everyday life. Information is being presented from every angle, be it the news, social media, or conversations with friends and family, and information about our great Sterling Heights park system is no different. Because the information can be difficult to sort through, I wanted to take the time to share with you factual information about our parks, as well as guidelines that everyone must follow to help slow the spread of COVID-19.

LAWN SERVICES

Sterling Heights residents have asked if they are permitted to use commercial lawn cutting and landscaping services at this time to maintain their lawns.

At this time, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer did not exempt routine grass maintenance from her “Stay Home, Stay Safe” Executive Order and has issued clarifications that cosmetic lawn maintenance and non-emergency improvements to the outdoor areas of residences and business are not permissible at this time. Remember – this is just for another two weeks.

Sterling Heights must follow the Executive Order and guidance provided by the State Attorney General and Governor’s offices in this regard. As such, weekly lawn maintenance by a commercial lawn cutting or landscaping company is not allowed unless and until the Governor’s Executive Order 2020-21 is lifted and/or modified to exempt these commercial services.

While under the “Stay Home, Stay Safe” Executive Order, the City will NOT be issuing any citations for tall grass.

With spring showers and warmer weather just around the corner, it is our hope the current situation changes for the better to allow the Governor to reassess the ability to utilize commercial landscaping companies for these services.

Any resident requiring essential landscaping work (i.e. to resolve basement flooding, to remove roots clogging a drain, etc.) must be done in accordance with the mitigation measures required under section 5c of the governor’s executive order.
BUSINESS RESOURCES
TOOLS AND RESOURCES YOU NEED
During the COVID-19 outbreak, the City is actively supporting our community at large, including the important members of our business community.

This includes the hundreds of small businesses that are the backbone of our community, providing important goods, services and income that keep our economy – and our residents – thriving.

We have prepared a comprehensive list of resources for both employers and their employees, and we will continue to do everything we can to ensure tools are made available from the state and federal government to protect businesses and their employees from any economic impact resulting from the COVID-19 public health crisis.
