What is "The Skinny"?
This monthly email shares updates about the many happenings at Pima Dermatology. The "SKINny" is the “scoop”, the “dish”, the “lowdown”. Since we're a dermatology practice, we’re all about skin! We’re also all about keeping our patients well-informed! This is good stuff -- and If you're in, read on!
Benzene Found in Popular Sunscreens + What You Should Know
An independent study conducted by Valisure, an independent testing lab company, analyzed nearly 300 different sunscreen products. The study found detectible levels of benzene (a potential carcinogen) in 27% of the products studied, including some popular, over-the-counter sunscreen sprays, lotions, and gels and after-sun care products. A link to Valisure's findings can be found here. The list of products that found a detectable amount of benzene can be found here.

According to the CDC, benzene is formed in natural processes (volcanoes, forest fires, crude oil) and human activities (cigarette smoke). It’s widely used in the U.S. and ranks in the top 20 chemicals for production volume. You can be exposed to benzene in outdoor air (vehicle exhaust, industrial emissions, pesticides) and indoor air too (paints, detergents). A major source of benzene exposure is tobacco smoke. What we need to be aware of is that this is not a byproduct of sunscreen. It’s a contaminant, meaning that it is a manufacturing issue, and not a sunscreen issue. It’s possible tiny amounts of trace benzene can be present, but it is certainly not intentionally added. For more information about benzene, visit the CDC's website here.

So what sunscreens are “safe” to use in light of the benzene ingredient concern? Dr. Schram and Dr. Beal advise it's best to avoid sunscreens containing benzene. We are still awaiting studies on the effects to come out. In the meantime, you can count on Pima Dermatology's face and body sunscreens to be benzene free (as they did not make it onto the list). Looking for "Chemical-Free / Reef-Safe" sunscreens? We have those too.

We are sunscreen advocates! 1 in 5 Americans will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the age of 70, so the odds are, you are far better off wearing an SPF than skipping it altogether. We strongly encourage wearing it. Be sure to wear sunscreen every day, regardless of your age, skin type, or skin tone. We recommend SPF 30+ or higher that is broad-spectrum [protecting against UVA/UVB (Aging and Burning) rays]. We offer many different formulas to suit your skin type and lifestyle. Just ask!
