Congratulations to Baraboo High School senior Jacob Carignan, recipient of the 2020 Herb Kohl Excellence Scholarship!
This achievement is given to only 100 high school students per year in Wisconsin and recognizes the recipient's student leadership, citizenship, school and community involvement, and academic achievement. The Foundation awards a $10,000 scholarship to each of the 100 Wisconsin hi

4K Registration On April 8
|
The 4K registration for the 2020-21 Baraboo Early Learning Cooperative (BELC) program will begin on April 8th at East Elementary School (815 6th Street) between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Reminders will be sent in the mail in March to all families currently on the district census. If you are new to the area, you are encouraged to contact District Registrar Kristine Snow at 608-355-3955 or ksnow@barabooschools.net to ensure your family is on the 4K mailing list.
Registering on April 8th greatly assists the district to plan accordingly for the fall. At registration, parents are encouraged to bring immunization records, proof of residency, and a copy of your child's birth certificate (or another formal document citing the birth date of the child). It is not necessary to bring children to registration. Parents will have an opportunity to indicate their preferences for possible 4K locations or sessions. Confirmation of location and times will be mailed to parents in late June.
After April 8th, 4K registration continues by meeting with Kristine Snow at 423 Linn Street in Baraboo during the work day. Please find additional 4K information for the 2020-21 school year on the District 4K website.

4K Students Practice Kindness
|
Ms. Fowler's 4K students participated in an activity about kindness and thinking before saying hurtful words. Each student received a paper heart. Students were then told that the heart was a bad heart. They said hurtful things to their hearts, such as: "I don't like you," "You're weird," or "You belong in the trash can" as they crumpled their hearts into a ball.
Ms. Fowler then asked the students if saying those words was a good choice or a sad choice. Everyone instantly replied that it was a sad choice. She asked her classes how they could fix their hearts and make them better. Students decided to uncrumple them, tape them, hug them, and give them compliments. However, 4K students quickly noticed the hearts still had wrinkles on them. They were not completely fixed. This led to a wonderful discussion about how the paper hearts are like people's hearts. Unkind words hurt - even if one tries to take them back. We will choose kindness over hurtfulness. We never want to wrinkle a person's heart.
The classes then recited the poem on the heart which reads:
"Before you speak,
Think and be smart.
It's hard to fix
A wrinkled heart."

Alliant Energy Speaks to Construction II Class
|
Employees from Alliant Energy came to the Construction II Class with Mr. Weiss at Baraboo High School to talk about careers related to their jobs in gas and electrical. Students learned that there is a shortage of workers in this area, and that by attending 6 months of school in this field you can earn an annual salary of $100,000+. They also talked about apprenticeships and where to attend school to earn degrees in the related fields.

East Families Spread the Love
|
Each year East Elementary School invites first grade families to come in the night before Valentine's Day to decorate their child's desk as a special reminder of how much they are loved. When the first graders come in the next morning they are always so excited and surprised that an adult from their family came in to school and created a special surprise for them!

NF Spreads Kindness to the Community
|
As part of Random Acts of Kindness Week, North Freedom Elementary School's buddy classrooms teamed up to create table tents for Coffee Bean Connection in Baraboo. Older students wrote quotes about kindness on the tents and then worked with a younger buddy to decorate them. Just another way to spread kindness into our community!

Elementary Summer Academy Registration Opens March 13
|
 The Baraboo School District's
Elementary Summer Academy
summer school program is going into its fifth year with an enrichment focus, offering a variety of K-5 hands-on and engaging courses where math and literacy are integrated throughout. Summer Academy creates meaningful learning opportunities that help decrease the summer academic slide, or the tendency for students to lose some of the achievement gains they made during the previous school year, that many students can experience during the summer months.
Summer Academy is open to any students
who are currently in
K-5 grades during the
2019-20 school year
and who live within
the Baraboo School
District attendance
area, and will be held
at
Al Behrman Elementary
(ABE), located at 400 Mulberry St., Baraboo. Classes are held June 10-12, June 15-19, June 22-26, June 29-July 2 and July 8-10. All Summer Academy courses are free, including free breakfast from 7:30 - 8 a.m. and free lunch from 11:30 a.m. - 12 p.m.
Families can enroll their child/children in 1, 2, or 3 courses starting at 10 a.m. on Friday, March 13th, 2020. The registration link will be emailed from the school district's Infinite Campus system.
The Baraboo School District is asking all families to work with their K-5 students to have consistent and regular Summer Academy attendance within the full 4-week Summer Academy session. Please contact Dr. Chris Olson at cdolson@barabooschools.net or 608-355-3906 with questions.

District 4K families participated in a super fun 4K Friendship Night at West Kindergarten Center on February 13.
The 4K students moved through an obstacle course, participated in friendship activities with other students, had some great snacks, and participated in a variety of other learning activities. Families also had the option to have a fun family photo taken.
Thanks to all 4K families who braved the cold to join this great event.

ABE Gets Hands-On with Math
|
Third graders at Al Behrman Elementary School have been enjoying learning more about weight and liquid capacity. Our math program allows us to practice and learn by doing hands on experiments. Along with math, we are also practicing our social skills of working as a team and taking turns.

West Holds Fine Dining Day
|
The staff at West Kindergarten Center is continually emphasizing kindness and good manners each day with the kindergarten students.
On February 14, West hosted its 4th annual Fine Dining Day following the regular lunch menu for that day. The lunchroom had special decorations, music was playing, and staff placed a continued emphasis on using our manners and politeness during lunch and other times during the school day.
A big thank you to West Education Assistants Sandra Busche and Sharon Prochnow for the added decorations and dessert goodies.

 Solo and Ensemble for middle school and high school music students is fast approaching!
This year's event will be held Saturday, Feb. 29 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Reedsburg Area High School (1100 South Albert Ave., Reedsburg). Students must make sure they know their performance time; the schedule is posted in the band and choir rooms.
Students should arrive at RAHS at least a half hour before their performance time to find the warm-up room, warm up, and get to their performance site. They should be outside their site at least five minutes prior to their schedule time.
While you are at the festival you are welcome to listen to other students' performances. The event is free and open to the public.
What students need to bring:

Instrument (case with supplies can be left in gymnasium or warm-up room during performance)

Music (all measures numbered) and the judge's copy (all measures numbered)

Money for concessions or a sack lunch if you are staying over the lunch hour
-
*Percussionists: you need to discuss with Ms. Lumsden & Mr. James exactly what you will need.
You are responsible for your own music & sticks/mallets.
Please take home everything (instrument and music) you need to perform by after school Friday, Feb. 28. The band and choir rooms will not be open Feb. 29.

BHS Students Attend Social Justice Forum
|
Students from Baraboo High School participated in the Dane County Social Justice Youth Forum Leadership Board meeting (DCSJYF) Thursday.
Students were there to plan an April forum that will bring together students for the purpose of having conversations around social justice, empathy, and to empower students to challenge others to interrupt behaviors and barriers that limit a sense of belonging.

 All elementary school children entering kindergarten through sixth grade in the fall will be eligible for the 2020 Summer Kid Stop Child Care Program. Summer Kid Stop is located at Gordon L. Willson Elementary School and is available weekdays from 7:15 AM to 5:45 PM starting on Wednesday, June 10 through Friday, August 14th.
Registration for the summer program begins on Monday, March 9th. Registration information may be found on the District website (please print off and submit), at all elementary school offices, or at the East or GLW Kid Stop sites. ALL forms (
including immunization information
) must be completed each time you register for Kid Stop.
One
registration form per child please. If your child will be taking medication during Kid Stop hours, please request an "Authorization to Administer Medication" form. Return your signed and completed forms along with the registration fee and June tuition.

Lifeguard Registration Opens Feb. 17
|
Registration for the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course at the Baraboo Indoor Pool will open Feb. 14.
To enroll, you must be at least 15 years of age before the last scheduled class and you must be able to demonstrate the prerequisite skills on Sunday, March 14th, 2020 @ 6:00 pm. at the Baraboo Indoor Pool. Cost to enroll is $200.

JYMS Groundbreaking Set for March 12
|
The Baraboo School District will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for the construction work planned for Jack Young Middle School on Thursday, March 12 starting at 2:45 p.m. The ceremony will be held at the middle school, at 1531 Draper St, Baraboo, WI.
The groundbreaking is open to members of the public, with representatives from the District Administration, School Board of Education, and the District's architectural and construction partners - CG Schmidt and EUA -- in attendance to help mark the milestone occasion.
The planned construction work at the middle school to modernize learning environments, improve infrastructure, and expand common areas at the aging middle school, was approved by District voters in a 2019 referendum. EUA, the project architect, and CG Schmidt, the construction manager, have been working closely with the District since the passage of the referendum to finalize designs for the school.

 The School District of Baraboo has announced the opening of nominations for the Excellence in Education Award (EIEA) and the Distinguished Elementary Teacher Award (DETA) programs for the 2019-'20 school year.
The EIEA award is sponsored by the BHS Graduating Class of 1956 and the DETA award is sponsored by Andrew Hauge, who grew up in Baraboo and attended Baraboo schools. The Class of 1956 and Andrew Hauge have established an endowment fund with the Greater Sauk County Community Foundation for the purpose of financing all costs associated with the award programs. The purpose of the award programs is to recognize and honor outstanding teachers in the Baraboo School District who have distinguished themselves as exemplary classroom teachers and who have demonstrated exceptional leadership skills and dedication to the young people of the Baraboo community. The winners of these annual awards will be announced near the end of the current school year at a special award ceremony.
The winner of the awards, who will be chosen by a five-member Selection Committee of retired teachers, community members and school district officials, will receive a framed honorary certificate and a stipend of at least $1,000 to be used for a professional development or educational enrichment activity which will enhance the teacher's knowledge, skills and classroom effectiveness. In addition, the winning teacher's name for the EIEA, which is given to a secondary teacher in the Baraboo School District, will be engraved on a large bronze plaque which hangs in the Media Center of Baraboo High School. The plaque is inscribed with a tribute to the former teachers of the Class of '56 who, "taught, guided and inspired" them during their years at Baraboo Junior High and Baraboo High School.
To be eligible for these awards a teacher must be:

Licensed and certified by the State of Wisconsin

Employed as a full-time teacher by the District

Planning to return as a full-time teacher in this District for the next school year
The Selection Committee will judge candidates based on the following criteria:

Pay Rate Increase for Guest Teachers!
|
The School District of Baraboo is hiring guest (substitute) teachers for all levels (4K-12).
The compensation rate has increased to $120 per day! Former teachers that have retired from the School District of Baraboo will receive a compensation rate of $140 per day.
Candidates must either be a teacher or substitute teacher licensed by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI). For information on how to apply for a substitute teaching license, please visit the DPI website.

 Lamers Bus Lines is seeking additional school bus drivers and b
us monitors.
Becoming a driver is a great opportunity for individuals looking for work before or after school, and becoming a bus monitor is great for those looking for after-school work. It's also a great job for parents of students in the District because:
- There are no nights or weekends for route drivers
- Drivers get summer vacation and snow days, just like the students
- If your child is in any sports or activities, you can get paid to cheer them on and support the team by driving the team bus
Lamers Bus Lines will provide drivers with complete paid training and teach you everything you need to know about driving a school bus.
