Community Rallies Around Becky's Place Resident
A Becky’s Place staff member found Miss Brenda sitting beside a busy road outside a Steak N Shake in September 2021. She was in her wheelchair with a couple of bags at her feet and an umbrella for shade. When asked if she needed help, Brenda indicated she was going to see her sister when the plans fell through, and she was stuck in Bedford. She had lost her photo ID and didn’t know what to do. Someone had put her up in a hotel, but she had run out of time and had nowhere to go.

When she arrived at Becky's Place, Miss Brenda was hesitant to trust others but quickly became everyone’s bonus grandma. She took care of others, and everyone took care of her. Miss Brenda applied for income-based housing and was placed on a waiting list. She eventually found housing at a little apartment complex and was beyond excited.

When the community found out that Miss Brenda had housing, she received gifts of furniture, household items, a TV, and money. Miss Brenda was unable to move her new furniture on her own, so a volunteer fire department and Becky’s Place staff helped her move into her new home. She stays in touch with Becky’s Place and her former housemates often visit and assist her with transportation, groceries, and support. Brenda is the happiest that she has been in a long time.
Resident Update
We are currently serving 14 residents and 13 children. 10 residents are employed and the others are working with their case manager to find employment.
Growing a Garden of Hope at Becky's Place
We have started a "Garden of Hope" for our residents. Utilizing a space behind the building there are now several garden beds for growing fruits, vegetables and flowers. Residents will help to water, weed and care for the garden.

A special thank you to the Lawrence County Community Foundation for their generous grant that will help us purchase needed gardening materials throughout the season. We would also like to thank Joanna Howe, a Purdue Master Gardener Intern, for helping get our gardens set up.

We cannot wait to see what grows in our garden and the joy it will bring our residents.

Why People Give to Religious Organizations
Charitable giving is central to Christian spirituality. We see everything we have, material and spiritual, as unmerited gifts from God. God entrusts us with everything we have because he is generous and wants to bless us.

Some interesting 2019 facts about charitable giving to religious organizations (according to studies by Sharefaith, USCCB, U.S. Catholic and Qgiv):

  • Overall charitable giving reached nearly $450 billion in 2019. Of those donations, approximately 1/3 of all charitable gifts benefited religious organizations
  • About 69% of all charitable donations come from individuals and 10% of these gifts come in the form of a bequest. Foundations and corporations contribute 17% and 5%, respectively.
  • Individuals who attend church regularly tend to donate more money to any cause, giving 81% of their donations to religious organizations with an average donation of $2,224. Americans who never attend religious services give less overall and tend to contribute more toward secular causes with an average secular donation of $593 and $111 for religious causes.
  • Not surprisingly, individuals donate more as their wealth increases. Christian households earning between $60-90,000 tend to donate at least $500 annually. Households earning $100,000+ donated $500+. However, younger-aged Christians earning less than $20,000 are eight times more likely to give church contributions than those making $75,000.

Giving of our God-given materials and talent is not merely an act of “giving back.” At its core, it is an expression of how we love and honor God and our neighbors. If you would like to make a gift of stock, IRA, donor advised fund or remember Becky’s Place in your will, please contact Cheri Bush for information 317-236-1411 or cbush@archindy.org Thank you!
