THIS SUNDAY'S SERVICE
REV. FLORENCE CAPLOW, JULIE LAUT
Sunday, May 31 at 10:15 a.m. via Live-stream

Some of our days can feel impossible. You can sustain yourself emotionally and mentally in difficulty when you know that something better is ahead, but how do we find new ways to be living our lives when we don’t know the outcome or the future?

In this service, Julie Laut and Rev. Florence Caplow will share their personal ways of living with “days like this”. Some of our talented voices will be singing two powerful contemporary songs, including “Days Like This” by Over the Rhine.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROSITY!
Your contributions and support allow us to continue to respond with love and resources to the needs in our congregation and the wider community. We couldn’t do it without your support and we are grateful to each of you.

The online "Zoom" Fellowship Hour immediately follows the live streamed service each Sunday. Please note the password to enter the meeting is UUCUC. All are welcome!
If you have missed any of the previous live streamed services, you can view them at https://uucuc.org/livestream-at-uucuc/ (they are listed towards the bottom of the page). You can also view previous live streamed services on our YouTube channel.
UPCOMING SUNDAY SERVICE
REV. FLORENCE CAPLOW
Sunday, June 7 at 10:15 a.m. via Live-stream

Each year we end our regular church year before summer services begin with a “flower communion” – a beautiful communal ceremony originally created by the Czeck Unitarian ministers Norbert and Maja Čapek. This year will be a little different, but stay tuned for how we will celebrate! The choir will be offering a virtual song for us.

JUNE 3, JUNE 7, AND JUNE 10

With the Annual Meeting scheduled for June 14th on-line, we have scheduled some information sessions to discuss both the logistics of the meeting, as well as the items coming up for a vote. Some of the information covered during the sessions will likely include: How will the Zoom-based Annual Meeting work? How will we vote and be counted? Highlights of the Budget, the Bylaws changes, and the affirmation votes coming up on June 14th. Questions are encouraged! Read more...
SAVE THE DATE: UUCUC'S ANNUAL MEETING ON JUNE 14TH!

The Board of Trustees has set the annual meeting date for Sunday, June 14 from 1:00 p.m. through 3:00 p.m. The meeting will be held virtually using Zoom. Logistical details are being developed by an Annual Meeting Planning Group and our goal is to provide the opportunity for participation for all members.  Stay tuned for further detailed information in coming weeks about how to access the meeting.

Please note: If you filled out the congregational Needs and Resources Survey and expressed interest in learning about Zoom, that information will be used to assist you in the coming weeks. An effort is underway to provide technical assistance to members to connect to the Annual Meeting by computer or phone.

For questions or further information, please contact Randy Locke at chair@uucuc.org .

OUR CARING CONGREGATION
"LITTLE FREE PANTRY" IN URBANA

A couple of opportunities for you to help out--- our own Julie Laut has set up a "Little Free Pantry" in front of her house at 505 W. Main, Urbana. She welcomes your donations of food & personal care products, in particular: pasta sauce, canned soup, tuna & beans. If she hasn't set out the shelving yet that morning you can leave things on the porch. Feel free to spread the word about this valuable neighborhood resource.

She's also looking for someone who might help construct a more stable/permanent structure so if you like to build things & are interested in helping, you can contact Julie at: jlaut@hushmail.com or 513-544-2682.
GROCERY DELIVERY AVAILABLE

If it would be helpful to have someone deliver groceries for you, we have several folks who have volunteered to do this. Contact Julie Laut at: jlaut@hushmail.com or 513-544-2682 & she’ll put you in touch with a volunteer.
UUCUC'S "WARM LINE"

If you find you could use some support or would like to talk with someone, please call the UUCUC “Warm Line” at 1-800-705-8158. One of the negative implications of “social distancing” is feeling isolated. There are volunteers from our church ready to talk with you, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You do not have to travel this road alone.
UUCUC'S "BUDDY SYSTEM"
Staying connected while
UUCUC facilities are closed

During this time of social distancing, staying in touch and checking in with each other is going to be very important. We hope you will consider being part of our "Buddy System" so we can care for one another.

You can sign up here: https://uucuc.breezechms.com/form/2184f1. Buddies will check in with each other regularly by phone to provide connection, companionship, and connections to help if needed. This is a great way to help each other.
JOYS AND SORROWS sent to joysandsorrows@uucuc.org for last Sunday, May 24 .

This first joy listed below from Jennifer and Jon Ellis was inadvertently omitted from the live streamed service on May 24. Congratulations to both Gwen and Maeve!

From Jennifer and Jon Ellis: It is with great joy that we shared with our daughter Gwen this week her milestone graduation from Edison Middle School, as well as our younger daughter Maeve’s graduation from South Side Elementary. We couldn’t be more proud of their hard work, dedication to achieving good grades, and how they continue to grow with such strength and grace. Our hearts flow over with love and astonishment that we got so lucky to have them in our lives.

From Sam Beshers and Lynn Wiley: Today (Sunday, May 24th) is our 34th wedding anniversary!

From Marsha Clinard: After waiting for months, I am finally having a much needed laminectomy on Wednesday. I am both excited and anxious. I am looking forward to being free of pain and able to walk again. Please send good thoughts.

From Alisha Dusty: My grandmother has entered hospice care. It has been hard for our family not to be able to see her during this time, and I feel sorrow for her not to have support around her in person as she is dying.

From Phyllis Gorfain: Jordan’s grandparents are joyous to hear his reflections and music, and send congratulations to him and Emma Herzog.

From David Gross: A great joy. Claudia Gross will NOT be undergoing pituitary surgery this year. After studying the second MRI, her neuro surgeon recommended doing nothing at this time and repeating the MRI study a year from now.

From Jim and Sandy Hannum: A concern for our brother-in-law, Mick, who struggles for life with covid-19 and underlying health problems. Please keep him, my sister, and our family in your heart.

From Alex Herzog: What a joy to be your grandparents, Emma! Love, Opa and Oma.

From Ellen Jacobsen: Sorrow for the diminishing social cohesion surrounding the response to covid and the many groups struggling disproportionally. Joy for a group of 6 scarlet tanangers who joined us for over 2 weeks of eating suet and oranges. Alas, they seem to have moved on yesterday but what joy they brought!

From Paul, Willow, and Xander Kaiser: Joy and gratitude for the encouragement and support folks have expressed as the search for our family's lost cat, Smokey, continues. When we find him, we will tell him you cared.

From Julie Laut: I am in mourning for the nearly 100,000 people in the United States who have died from the novel corona virus. I work to hold them and their loved ones in my heart while also finding hope in the new ways of being in community we are building despite the pandemic.

From the Pitcel Family: Prayers for those in Midland, MI who have lost their homes due to the flooding (from the dam breaking).

From Kathy Richards: Such good news to read about Sally Fritsche and learn she and her spouse will be joining our UU community in September! Welcome Sally and Miles!

From Catherine Ritchie: I am deeply saddened by the death of my Dallas friend, author Karen Blumenthal, this past week from a heart attack at age 61. She was a superb writer of nonfiction for young adults and an even better role model who supported my own writing projects through the years with enthusiasm and generosity. My sense of loss is profound.

From Amy Robison: A year after my father passed away, his sole surviving sibling has also died. RIP Uncle Kenny. Waiting for my grandfather's iris to bloom around Memorial Day for a fitting tribute.
SOCIAL JUSTICE NEWS
UUCUC Shared Offering.  Each month a selected organization is chosen to receive half of our weekly Sunday plate collections. You may donate to the social action offering for the month in one of the following ways:

During the month of May, we will support Sistering CU. Sistering CU’s mission statement is to provide a realistic and compassionate postpartum support network for families in Champaign County and enable them to successfully navigate the challenges of life with a newborn. They envision a community where the transition to parenthood is acknowledged, valued, supported and new families thrive. All of this leads to greater potential to provide ease, equanimity and joy within the family unit and throughout our community. During the month of June, we will support Uniting Pride of Champaign County. Uniting Pride (UP) was founded in 2009 as an organization to advocate for the equality, wellness, advocacy, and visibility of the LGBTQ+ communities in Champaign County. It is the only LGBTQ+ resource center in the greater east central Illinois region, so finds itself serving those beyond. UP does this through many support groups, community events, educational programming, guest speakers, referrals, and resources. They also host the annual Champaign-Urbana Pride Festival and Parade each September.
GIVING AND GRATITUDE

Food insecurity has skyrocketed among our C-U immigrant community as business closings have resulted in massive job loss. There are thousands of undocumented immigrants in our community that do not qualify for unemployment benefits, and they need our help.

The Immigration Justice Task Force is diverting $1,100 from our budget to send to CU FAIR’s Pandemic Response Fund. We are asking members and friends of UUCUC to join us in ensuring he most vulnerable in our community can feed their families.  Read More...
