This week, this month, this year— they've been hard. With a constant onslaught of regressive legislative decisions that perpetuate violence in all its forms, sexual violence being center stage in many high profile legal cases, and ongoing police brutality impacting our Ohioan communities, it’s hard to know which way is up. It would be irresponsible to send this newsletter without this stark acknowledgment. As we head into August, we want to extend the themes of grace, cooperation, accountability, and support—to you, to your teams, to your communities, to us all.

The work can sometimes feel insurmountable, and yet we show up. The work can sometimes feel thankless, and yet we show up. The work can sometimes feel stifling, and yet we show up. And when we say “show up” it also means knowing our limits, our need for rest, our need for community care, our need to be wholly ourselves—anger, sadness, rage, and hope tangled in one another. How can we support each other in leaning in and leaning out? How can we ground ourselves in reciprocity—to carry the weight when it becomes too heavy for a colleague or community member, knowing that we can pass it along when we need that reprieve? How can we find joy in small and big ways, as a form of resistance to the heaviness of our present?

Below are some resources that may spark hope and joy for you as we continue to show up. And know that technical assistance is not limited to programming and logistical questions—OAESV is here to provide support and resources for those less tangible pieces that make this work uniquely challenging and heartening. So please don’t hesitate to reach out; asking for support is a radical act. There is truly power and strength in a collective.

Overcoming Barriers to School-Based Prevention Education

Many folks in the prevention field have expressed concern across the country as curriculum ban bills have begun to crop up at state levels. Preventionists in direct service positions have been experiencing a range of pushback on prevention education in the classroom from curricula surveillance to tenuous community partnerships. As a response, Mónica García Vega at Florida Council Against Sexual and Sarah Ferrato at OAESV collaborated on a roadmap, with crucial input from Sarah Curley and Ian Henderson at Wisconsin Coalition Against Sexual Assault to navigate legislative restrictions while holding true to anti-oppressive frameworks.

Presenting Data Effectively

In this virtual 2-day session, you’ll learn the undeniable science behind why we need to be presenting data effectively. We’ll walk through Dr. Evergreen’s Four Step Visualization Process – a surefire sequence of steps that leads to high-impact graphs. Along the way we’ll consider how audiences engage with visuals, which chart type will best tell the story in the dataset, and how we can use easy to learn design skills to sharpen up the point in the visual. After this workshop you’ll be better able to visualize your data so it represents your quality data using simple strategies.

Register here. Deadline is August 12.

**Spots are limited and reserved for folks in the field working directly with data visualization.

Ohio abortion, sexual violence statistics show disturbing likelihood of children being impregnated - Ohio Capital Journal

With varying degrees of subtlety, some Ohio Republican leaders are pushing back on an account that a 10-year-old rape victim traveled to Indiana earlier this month to get an abortion. However, Ohio's own abortion statistics and other reporting show that it's disturbingly possible for a 10-year-old to become impregnated in the Buckeye State.
