A Message from Councilmember Malnar

May 22, 2020

Dear Sahuaro District Residents,

This week the City Council held a Budget Workshop to finalize the operating budget and discussed the Capital Improvement Program (CIP) Budget for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2020.

The Council provided consensus to provide after school programming at the 3 City owned recreation centers. It was recommended that the City partner with local Glendale colleges and universities to participate in the process.

The pie chart below shows the FY20-21 operating budget by department.

Highlights from the Capital Improvement Program for next year include design of Heroes Regional Park Lake, a splash pad at O'Neil Park, several public safety building remodels, preparations for the North Cell at the Landfill, and significant investments in street construction and nearly doubling the Street Pavement Management Plan budget to $10.2 million each year over the next 5 years.

There was also discussion about the need to invest in park maintenance, and returning the City Street Sweeping Program to a monthly schedule, once the street sweeping equipment becomes available. Delivery of the street sweeping equipment is over 1 year behind, with one unit currently on order.

Have a nice Memorial Day weekend. Let's honor and remember those that have served or are serving our country.

Sincerely,

Ray Malnar
Vice Mayor
Sahuaro District

GLENDALE READIES REOPENING PLANS
Resident and Employee Safety Remain a Priority as City Reopens Services

The City of Glendale is working to reopen many facilities closed during the COVID-19 pandemic. The City will continue to follow recommended health guidelines as it begins to welcome residents back to recreational facilities, libraries and public meetings. Access to many facilities and services has been restricted since mid-March to help stop the spread of the coronavirus.

SAFETY FIRST
Those using public amenities will still need to abide by the social distancing measures that are in place, as well as making sure groups are not larger than 10 people. Our City Park Rangers and Code Enforcement Officers will be monitoring these locations regularly and will be responsible for breaking up large groups and making sure people keep proper distance between themselves. Our employees will make sure that anyone in violation is informed about what measures need to be in place for them to be able to continue to use any of our public amenities. Visitors will also notice more frequent cleanings at all facilities. Employees will find thermometer testing stations and increased availability of hand sanitizer, as many of them return to the office after telecommuting during the pandemic. Welcome back residents, we can't wait to see you again!!

ZONE GLENDALE

The City of Glendale has embarked upon an effort to rewrite its Zoning Ordinance (Code), which was last comprehensively updated and codified in 1993. Since that time, portions of the Code have been amended to respond to the changing needs of the community and address specific impacts of development; however, these incremental changes have also left the Code with fractured and inconsistent regulations that often do not provide adequate guidance on how to properly administer certain permitting activities and/or development proposals that are occurring in the Glendale community.

Construction will continue through June 19th.

STAY VIGILANT
as Restaurants, Stores
and Other  Businesses
Begin to Open

As a customer, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) suggests, under all circumstances, to follow these precautions:

* Stay home if sick
* Order online or use curbside pickup if possible
* Protect yourself while shopping
* Stay at least 6 feet away from others while shopping and in lines
* Cover your mouth and nose with a cloth face covering when you have to go out in public
* When you do have to visit in person, go during hours when fewer people will be there (for example, early morning or late night)
* If you are at higher risk for severe illness, find out if the store has special hours for people at higher risk. If they do, try to shop during those hours. People at higher risk for severe illness include adults 65 or older and people of any age who have serious underlying medical conditions.
* Disinfect the shopping cart, use disinfecting wipes if available
* Do not touch your eyes, nose, or mouth
* If possible, use touch-less  payment (pay without touching money, a card, or a keypad). If you must handle money, a card, or use a keypad, use hand sanitizer right after paying.
* After leaving the store, use hand sanitizer. When you get home, wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
