The GFWC TAunton and Raynham Jr. Woman's Club's membership is growing with two additional members having been installed at the club's March meeting on Monday night at the Silver Platter Restaurant inside Bristol Plymouth Technical High School. Membership Chairperson Joyce Clark installed Judy Floor of No. Dighton and Debra Chaplin of Raynham. Acting president Cindy Brogan presented them with the GFWC pin welcoming them into the club.

Women 18 years and older are invited to attend a meeting to get to know the juniors and can call Joyce at 508 823-4482 or go to  gfwctauntonraynhamjuniors.org
In addition the guest speaker was the recently elected first woman Mayor of Taunton, Shaunna O'Connell. Mayor O'Connell spoke on how she got to where she is today. Never intending to become a public servant she however was outrage when she had seen a news broadcast concerning a child kidnapping in Florida in 2005. She decided then to make a difference to help protect potential victims. This began her unintentional journey into politics. She was a member of the State House of Representatives and is now the 50th Mayor of Taunton. She is dedicated and loyal to the people she serves in the community she grew up in and loves.
She was accompanied by Kelly Dooner. Dennis Ackerman also attended assisting his wife Judy who is the clubs Programs Chairperson. Acting President Cindy Brogan presented the Mayor with a gift basket as a thank you for visiting the club.
Other programs that evening were a March of Dimes Toss to raise funds for the cause organized by Chairperson Robin Broberg. In addition Leadership Chairwomen Joan Rainville Curran and Paula Gasparonii tested the members observational skills with a Mix it Up game. The club also donated $3500 in student scholarships to several local high schools.
Historical Tidbit:

Early Education

"The first settlers were intelligent and virtuous, and having made great sacrifices in coming to the wilderness, determined to give their children opportunities for instruction. Until after the Revolution the schoolmaster instructed the children in reading, writing, arithmetic and morals, for £10 a year. His school was occasionally removed from one section of the town to another, for the convenience of his pupils. Some of the intelligent boys studied surveying, and all recited weekly from the Assembly's Catechism."

Badminton
by Deena Anzum, BuzzAround Intern

In the summertime when my cousins come over, we like to play badminton together. On the weekends when the weather is nice, we usually have barbeque parties. While the food is cooking, all the cousins get together and play. We usually like to form teams of two. Badminton is very enjoyable. It gets everyone energized and feels great when we get a continuous run. Sometimes the birdie will hit one of our faces and everyone laughs. Some of us even fall trying to catch the birdie.

My uncle was a badminton player back in the day so sometimes he would join. However, since he is a professional, he plays hard and even the good players cannot keep up! As a kid, my mother also played with her friends. So, she would join as well. It is even more fun when everyone joins in! One summer, all the parents came together and joined the kids so we had two big groups. We do not follow any of the usual rules for badminton. We just play for fun. We take turns serving and usually whichever side the birdie lands is the team that would serve. For example, if it lands on my team's side, then my team would serve.

With all this free time... outdoor activity is perfect!

Avocado Tree Growing Indoors in Massachusetts
By Gregory Venezia
Something you might not know... You can grow avocado trees indoors here in Massachusetts. You start them in water until they sprout roots. Then pot them in dirt.

I put the pit in a plastic container filled with water and push toothpicks in the pit to suspend it over the water. I've heard that some people have simply put them in a plastic bag with water, and that worked for then. Then I put them in a pot of dirt. I used dirt from my garden.

I put the pits in water some time before September. They take a while to start growing roots, so it could have been a month or two.
In September 2018 it began to grow roots.
In December 2018 it began to sprout leaves.
In January the leaves got pretty big.
The picture to the left is the most recent photo I have of a few of the plants I'm growing. From left to right the plants are passion fruit vine, jack fruit, avocado tree, passion fruit vine. All the fruit to grow these plants can be purchased from the grocery store.

The avocado plant is starting to wilt, but I think that is from over watering, so with less frequent watering I hope to see it perk back up. The sunny weather should help too.

I like gardening because if something doesn't work you still learn something, and you can do better next time.
Socializing with Science
"Social Distancing" is a tool being put into place for large, close gatherings (sporting events, concerts) to slow the spread of this respiratory virus, a needed precaution. Due to this and the barrage of media attention, we at the BuzzAround suggest some simple ways to remain social & active in your community.

Here is some science on the spread of Covid-19: It is water droplets from a sick person getting into your body that will spread it. If it’s safe for you, all other life activities should continue. We need interaction with others, and it's a great time to be outside. Show your love & compassion.

Here are some suggestions for those that are able: 1) Take a walk or ride a bike around your neighborhood. Last night I was walking my dog and a neighborhood kid stopped and talked to me. We had a fun conversation. I am never disappointed checking out my neighborhood.
2) Shop at a locally owned store: Infamous for never being too busy, local shops are fun nooks of helpfulness and original items. If you don't see what you want, ask the owner or clerk to find something for you. They will go out of their way to help you. Talk about feeling loved!
3) Keep yourself healthy. Stay hydrated, get enough sleep and eat plenty of vegetables & fruit. If you don't recognize a word on a food's ingredient list, don't eat it!
4) Stay active in your local community & keep in touch with folks around you, if not in person, then by phone & messages.
5) If you have a fever or cough, please keep out of social interactions. And even if you don't present with symptoms, know that you can slow the spread of respiratory illness with frequent hand washing and being mindful of a 6-foot boundary around your mouth, nose & eyes.
And here is some social science: We are all in this together. Know your stuff and take care of yourself, but don't create an unhealthy lifestyle by isolating yourself.
Whatever challenges you face today, don't face them alone. ~ Jacquie
