Over 30 young professionals had the awesome opportunity to help the DRA bring back ideas on how to betterment Chaplain Schmitt Island and spent a lovely night at Houlihan’s to connect with YP members. Thank you to everyone that came out and helped with this project!

For upcoming events and more fun evening activities, keep an eye out on the YP connector or social media.

Why do you YP?

I YP because it’s awesome getting to know other young professionals in the area and being able share stories on our journey. Getting together monthly at YP Luncheons is a great opportunity to hear from leaders in the area that experienced some of the same challenges we face and is a daily reminder to stay humble and learn as much as you can, while you can.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

Jim Collins was once asked what he loves about Dubuque when an employee was thinking about leaving. He said he loves the Dubuque community and Dubuque’s best years are yet to come. Dubuque has great infrastructure, education, and healthcare. We get the best of both worlds of nationally branded companies as well as small businesses, locally owned, and non-profit organizations.

If you want to be a good leader in the community, Jim Collins has this advice:

  • Show up and do work.
  • Listen and watch mentors that lead.
  • Be honest. Being dishonest will come back to haunt you.
  • It’s good to always develop relationships and seek advice.
  • Communicate. You can never be accused of overcommunicating.
  • Offer gratitude to those around you and seek advice from them.
  • Eliminate gossiping and those that drag you down.
  • Address conflict early and professionally.
  • Enter conflict with a heart at peace, not at work.
  • Invest in getting to know your coworkers.
  • Exercise, meditate, pray, whatever it is you do.
  • Own your life and be passionate about it.
