Day 9: Climbing Even Higher to Colombia

Destination: Bogotá, Colombia
In Nairobi, Kenya, on yesterday's trip, we were at almost 6,000 feet. Bogotá's altitude is 8,675 feet above sea level and is one of the highest cities in South America. Bogotá is Colombia's beating heart, an engaging and vibrant capital cradled by chilly Andean peaks and steeped in sophisticated urban cool. Bogotá has a climate similar to a Mediterranean climate; the weather is basically the same all year with highs around 68 and lows around 45 and it's green year round.

Colombia has the second-highest biodiversity in the world. Its territory encompasses the Amazon rainforest, highlands, grasslands, islands and coastlines along both the Atlantic and Pacific.

Map Colombia
Fun Facts:
Bogot á has a driving law called "pico y placa". It was introduced to reduce traffic jams during rush hour. Vehicles with an odd number as the last number on the license plate can only drive into restricted areas on odd days and even numbers on even days. There are no restrictions on the weekends. If it's not your day? Take a bus.

Also: Bandeja Paisa is Colombia's national dish. Its ingredients include white rice, red beans, minced or ground beef, plantain, corn, egg, avocado, pork cracklings and chorizo sausage - sounds yummy!

Art Form:  Hand-painted Upcycled Clocks
A small family business in Bogatá, Colombia has a passion for transforming iron and other recycled metals into furniture and home decor. Infused with new life through color and humor, their unique pendulum clocks are a delight to behold and add a whimsical touch to any room.

OXI Lilianna

Oxidos was founded by Liliana Otalora in 1994. As a child, Liliana was always painting, drawing and coloring.  She studied Industrial Design at Jorge Tadeo Lozano University in Bogotá, Colombia, which lead to a career producing scale models in metal. She eventually began showing and selling her own unique designs at a local flee market and then named her new company Oxidos.

OXI Welding
Lilianna and her husband Juan Carlos Bohorquez design and produce these colorful humorous clocks made primarily from recycled scrap metal.

OXI PaintingClocks

They hire and train individuals in need of employment to produce and hand paint each piece to their standards. The employees also learn soldering, assembly and ornamentation. Oxidos hand crafted products are far from mass produced.

OXI PaintingClocks2

The name Oxidos comes from the process of oxidation used to create the rusted patina on the metal prior to painting with a crackled finish. Each clock is handmade and will have slight variations that make each piece unique.

All Clocks have a quiet moving pendulum! You'll be enchanted just as we are. By the way, the pendulums don't swing as fast as this picture. This little bird is really on the go!

Each day that I go into our store and flip on the lights, these sweet little clocks greet me with their gentle pendulum swings. Right now one of our clocks needs a new battery. It seems quiet and waiting.  Perhaps these days that might be how we feel too, needing a new battery. Well, here's to today, recharged and swinging into new rhythms.
