RHS Rox-Thon Update
The Rox-THON leadership team has decided to cancel their in-person event this year and transition to a virtual one. It will go live for 2-3 hours on Friday, May 29th starting at 7 p.m.

Students do not need to fundraise to participate but are still welcome to do so. It will feature some guest speakers, interactive games, and give away a bunch of prizes and gift cards.

Rox-THON re-opened fundraising for the month of May. While their proceeds will still support Goryeb Children's Hospital and pediatric cancer research through Four Diamonds, a majority of the money they raise in May will go to PPE (COVID-medical supplies) and providing gift cards for children and families, as well as for health care workers at Goryeb to get food. Please consider making/sharing  a fundraising page  to help their efforts. You may still mail any cash/checks you've previously collected to:  Roxbury High School,  Attn: Mike Gottfried,  1 Bryant Drive,  Succasunna, NJ 07876.  If you would prefer to drop off your funds, please respond and we'll coordinate a time to do so.

Lastly, they are also selling Four Diamonds Yowies for $4, which can be used as a facemask. They can be purchased online and will be dropped off in your mailbox.

Roxbury High Schoolers Plan Virtual Book Readings for Kids
Some members of the Roxbury High School Interact Club will soon be offering virtual story-telling sessions during which they will read books to children.  The online video sessions, to take place via Google Meet, will occur at 1 p.m. on May 22, May 29 and June 5, all Fridays. "If they go well, we might do it through the end of June," Interact Club President Camille Guglielmo said.

Guglielmo said she will be one of the Interact Club members reading books to youngsters. She said club members thought the reading sessions might help both kids and parents.  "We know a lot of parents are struggling to keep kids occupied," Guglielmo said.

The first book on the agenda is Pete the Cat: Firefighter Pete, by James Dean, which will be read by Caitlin Caccavella, Guglielmo said. The plan is to not only read the books but discuss them briefly.

The readings will be open to all elementary school kids and there will be no limit on the number of people who can tune-in. Click here to read more from TAPinto Roxbury.

Homemade Music Video Gives 'Thanks' to Roxbury Educators
Roxbury School Board Member Dan Masi and his musically talented wife and children picked up their instruments during Teacher Appreciation Week and recorded a music video as a way of giving thanks to teachers and other school workers.

The  YouTube video, which runs two minutes and 37 seconds, shows the Masi family performing the song "Thank You" by English singer/songwriter Dido. It includes not only video clips of the family members playing the song, but also still photographs taken over the years of some big days related to school.

Masi said the goal of the effort was to acknowledge the work of teachers and others in the school district since March 18 when the COVID-19 crisis forced the closure of all schools and the move to remote instruction. Click here to read more and watch the video from TAPinto Roxbury.

Jefferson School's Community Share a Success
Jefferson's Share Bin-September 2019
Back in September beginning on the first day of school, Jefferson Elementary School began it's "Community Share" project where students contributed to the Roxbury Social Services food pantry by collecting food items that in prior years were thrown away.

Some students who were purchasing their lunch may not have wanted their milk, yogurt, carrot sticks, etc. that came with a school lunch, so the school created a "Share Bin" for "unwanted, unopened, and uneaten" items.  This food was stored in a donated refrigerator in the lunchroom and three times a week the collection was delivered to Roxbury Social Services.

The final tally of donated items when school closed due to COVID-19 on March 13 was 948 milk cartons, 113 containers of yogurt, 2,790 bags of carrots, and 1,948 various fruit items. Also donated were juice boxes, cheese sticks, and pretzel bags. Click here to read more on our website under "In the News".

Preschool Power during Flexible Instruction

It is not what happens to you but how you react that matters.  Sometimes we look to small children when big changes happen and expect them to behave like we anticipate young children will.

This does not hold true for the preschool students in Patti Klein's preschool class and their champion parents, siblings, and grandparents. Perhaps it is these young ones that have so very much to teach all of us if we take time to do what we all should do when a child speaks to us; STOP, DROP, and LISTEN.

"Here is what I now after more than 40 days as a virtual preschool teacher. My students are much more adaptable than I am. My students' caregivers have so much to teach me and it does not matter if it is virtual or not. A child's smile of accomplishment is the most joyous of all things.

Enjoy these beautiful little one's pictures showing all of us, they do hard things with grace and happiness. Click here to view this information on our website under "In the News".

Kindergarten Registration Continues During COVID Closures
Roxbury Schools continues Kindergarten registration for the upcoming school year during the COVID-19 school closures.

Roxbury offers a full-day kindergarten program designed to develop knowledge and skills in the physical, social, emotional, and cognitive areas. Our goal is to help children develop skills and strategies that will help them learn and establish a foundation for lifelong success in education. The program allows more time for students to address curriculum in depth and allows teachers to provide additional activities in learning.

Children must be five years old on or before October 1, 2020 to participate. To register for Kindergarten, parents must bring their child's original birth certificate, a record of immunizations, and three proofs of residency at the time of registration.

Roxbury Alumni In the News

Ledgewood's Boon Inducted into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi
Olivia Boon of Ledgewood was recently initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation's oldest and most selective all-discipline collegiate honor society. Boon was initiated at University of Delaware.

Boon is among approximately 30,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni to be initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year. Membership is by invitation only and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. Only the top 10 percent of seniors and 7.5 percent of juniors are eligible for membership. Graduate students in the top 10 percent of the number of candidates for graduate degrees may also qualify, as do faculty, professional staff and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction.

Phi Kappa Phi was founded in 1897 under the leadership of undergraduate student Marcus L. Urann who had a desire to create a different kind of honor society: one that recognized excellence in all academic disciplines.

Today, the Society has chapters on more than 300 campuses in the United States and the Philippines. Its mission is "To recognize and promote academic excellence in all fields of higher education and to engage the community of scholars in service to others." Roxbury Rotary Fights Hunger w/ Gift Card Donation to Social Services
The Roxbury Rotary Club recently donated more than $1,000 worth of gift cards to Roxbury Social Services as part of its pledge to eliminate hunger in the township, said club President Steve Alford.

"Roxbury Rotary has set some goals to help make sure no one in Roxbury is going hungry as a result of this COVID-19 virus or for any other reason, Alford said.

He said the organization on Friday presented to Roxbury Social Services Director Janet Wald 42 Shoprite gift cards worth $25 each. "And there are plans in the works to make a second donation as well as also donating gift cards to the clergy council here in Roxbury to be given out by the clergy to those in need."

Many of the Roxbury Rotary Club members are business owners who, like others, are feeling a financial impact due to the economy being substantially shut-down due to the pandemic. But Alford said "Sometimes you just gotta step up and try to make a difference. My club members take helping others very seriously, and we will not stop as long as there is a need." The overall winner of the district competition will be displayed for one year in the U.S. Capitol as well as on Rep. Malinowski's website and social media pages.  The exhibit in Washington, D.C., will also include artwork from other contest winners nation-wide.

Township of Roxbury partners with American Red Cross to host community blood drive - June 25
Township of Roxbury will host a community blood drive with the American Red Cross on Thursday, June 25, 2020 from 3:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m. at the Township of Roxbury Senior Center located at 72 Eyland Avenue in Succasunna, NJ.

To Schedule an Appointment:
Individuals can schedule an appointment to give blood with the American Red Cross by visiting RedCrossBlood.org using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, calling 1-800-RED CROSS or activating the Blood Scheduling Skill for Amazon Alexa.

Blood donation is essential: As the coronavirus pandemic has grown, the Red Cross has experienced an increase in blood drive cancellations across the country due to concerns about congregating at workplaces, college campuses and schools.  Blood donation is essential for hospitals to be able to take care of those who need it. This blood shortage could impact patients who need surgery, victims of car accidents and other emergencies, or patients suffering from cancer. The demand for blood products (blood, platelets and plasma) is constant, even when the world isn't in the midst of a global pandemic.

"We are excited to be hosting a blood drive here in town. If anyone is wondering what they can do to help during this pandemic, donating blood is a great way to give back." said Kellie Ann Keyes, Blood Drive Coordinator.

Additional questions can be directed to Kellie Ann Keyes at 973-448-2053. Click here to read more from Hopatcong Lake Regional News.

Lake Hopatcong Veterans Cruise for 2020 - June 27
The date has been set as Saturday, June 27th for the 5th Annual Veterans Cruise on Lake Hopatcong, and that means the scramble for seats has already started for this special tribute to our veterans - America's heroes.  Each year Lake Hopatcong Cruises honors our veterans from the lake's four border towns - Hopatcong, Jefferson, Mount Arlington, and Roxbury - with a two-hour complimentary cruise around the lake, and a special tribute is paid to the veterans throughout the cruise as residents line the bridges and docks with waving flags in honor of the service that they have provided to our country.  This event is extremely popular with the Veterans and will fill quickly, so please contact your appropriate town representative to have your name added to the list as soon as possible. Last year in Hopatcong the first-come-first-served list filled within days and overflowed into a long waiting list. Click here to read more from Hopatcong Lake Regional News.

Lake Hopatong Block Party will now be held on Oct. 10
The annual Lake Hopatcong Block Party has been moved to Saturday, Oct. 10.   "As was announced earlier, in following the CDC directive on public gatherings, we unfortunately cannot hold the Lake Hopatcong Block Party on May 9," a statement from Lee Moreau of the Lake Hopatcong Foundation states.

"We are now moving forward on rescheduling the Lake Hopatcong Block Party to Saturday, October 10, the day before the LHF Lake Loop, also at Hopatcong State Park," he said.

"For those who have already responded requesting a refund, those checks will be issued April 13 and put into the mail.   Thank you for being a part of the Lake Hopatcong Block Party, and please stay safe and healthy," he said. Click here to read this coverage from the Roxbury Register.
