A team consisting of Peter Bobkowski, Lisa McLendon, Kerry Benson, Patricia Gaston and Heather Lawrenz has received an Ideas to Action grant from KU’s Center for Teaching Excellence to support their work on the new JMC core curriculum. The team will unify the revised core’s learning goals and assessment so that the core serves as a more well-defined foundation for student learning.
The Journalism 611: Sales Strategies class welcomed John Sommese, senior vice president of CoxReps New York via Zoom on March 8. In his 30+ years of leading sales teams, Sommese has delivered innovative solutions for television broadcast groups, cultivated lasting client relationships, developed his sales team, and achieved successful sales results. He spoke with the class about how relationships play an important role in sales and offered strategies that would benefit the students professionally and personally. Associate Professor Hyunjin Seo spoke about roles of academia and nonprofit organizations in enhancing diversity and inclusion in the tech industry at the 52nd annual conference of the ACM Technical Symposium on Computer Science Education on March 18.
Associate Professor Jerry Crawford was a panelist at the AEJMC Southeast Colloquium conference on Friday. The discussion was entitled, "That's Doctor Biden To You": Mentoring Female Scholars in the Age of Mediated Misogyny. The panel reviewed the recent controversy over a Wall Street Journal op-ed suggesting that Jill Biden, wife of President Joe Biden, should not acknowledge receiving her Doctor of Education (Ed.D.). Crawford, as chair of AEJMC's Profession Freedom & Responsibility committee (PF&R), wrote the association's presidential statement.

The KU Solar Car Team is seeking team members for its business subteam, which handles all the non-engineering operations of the team, including fundraising, social media marketing, finding sponsorship opportunities, community outreach and more. The team meets Mondays and Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. The KU Solar Car Team is a student-led organization committed to inspiring and leading the next generation through the design, manufacturing and racing of a solar-powered electric vehicle. Wichita Gridiron Scholarships: Students are encouraged to apply for more than $10,000 in scholarships raised through Gridiron, a Wichita stage show starring members of the local media. The Self Memorial Scholarship is a merit-based scholarship that recognizes outstanding undergraduates from KU who will be transitioning into their first year of a master’s or doctoral degree program at KU in the fall 2021 semester. It is open to domestic and international students. All KU graduate programs and departments are eligible. Baron to accept National Citation during online event April 21
|
Martin Baron, retired executive editor of The Washington Post, will accept the William Allen White National Citation award during a virtual event at 4 p.m. April 21 during an online discussion with J-School students, faculty, staff, trustees and alumni. The event also will be open to the public. Link to register will be provided closer to the event date. Baron was selected as the 2020 National Citation recipient and was scheduled to receive the award and give an address on the KU campus last April, but the event was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Evan Dunbar, j’14, is an ESPN disaster recovery operator at Disney Media & Entertainment Distribution, which is the backup feed for ESPN, ESPN2 and SEC Network. If there is a massive equipment failure that causes the ESPN broadcast feeds to go down, the Disney Media & Entertainment Distribution would take over as the network origination point until the issues are resolved.
