Recipe of the Week
Peanut Butter and Strawberry Jam Cobbler

This all-American recipe is sure to be a hit at the dinner table with friends or kept as a breakfast that reheats well for the week. The cobbler comes together using pantry staples, with a few extra goodies (like peanut butter chips!) to keep things fun. Cornstarch makes a great substitute for the tapioca and the recipe’s author, local cookbook author Joy the Baker, encourages other tasty additions, like chocolate chips or nuts of choice.
Ingredients
For the Cookies:
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 cup smooth peanut butter (Skippy kind, not natural)
  • 8 tablespoons (1 stick) unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • 3/4 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup peanut butter chips
  • 3/4 cup roasted salted chopped peanuts
For the Cobbler:
  • 2 pints fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced into bite-size chunks (about 4 cups)
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 tablespoons minute tapioca*
Directions
To make the cookies dough in a medium bowl whisk together flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt in a bowl.
In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment or in a medium bowl using an electric hand mixer, cream together peanut butter, butter, and sugars until well combined, about 3 to 5 minutes.
With the mixer on low speed, beat in the eggs and vanilla extract.
Add the dry ingredients to the wet, mixing on low speed until just combined.
Fold in the peanut butter chips.
Spoon dough onto a large sheet of waxed paper and roll into a log. Refrigerate while you combine the strawberry mixture.
To make the strawberry filling, first place a rack in the upper third of the oven and preheat oven to 375 degrees F. In a medium bowl toss together the sliced strawberries, lemon juice, sugar, and spices. Allow to rest at room temperature for 15 minutes until some juices develop in the bottom of the bowl.
Toss in the melted butter and the instant tapioca. Stir to combine. The tapioca will look coarse within the mixture. It will dissolve in the oven.
Spoon the strawberry mixture into a baking dish. Place in the oven and bake for 15-18 minutes, until the strawberries begin to breakdown and release their juices. Remove from the oven and stir.
Remove the cookie dough from the refrigerator and scoop cookies into three tablespoon mounds. Roll in chopped peanuts and use a for to make a # pattern.
Place cookies atop the cooked strawberries. Place in the oven and allow to bake until cookies are lightly puffed and cooked through, 12-15 minutes. Remove from the oven and allow to cool for 15 minutes before serving. Best enjoyed with ice cream.

National Release of Musician Rickie Lee Jones’ Memoir
 April 6 at Preservation Hall
The Garden District Book Shop is honored to host an evening recognizing the achievements of Rickie Lee Jones and to launch her new memoir on April 6 at 726 St. Peter St. in the French Quarter at the historic jazz venue. Jones’ book signing event will occur outdoors and socially distanced.
Jones is a multiple award-winning singer, musician and songwriter whose diverse work spans across a multitude of genres including blues, pop, R&B, rock, soul, and jazz. Her memoir, “Last Chance Texaco: Chronicles of an American Troubadour”, Jones’ debut literary work, a no-holds-barred account of her life as one of rock’s hardest working women. The autobiographical work takes readers through the journey of her life from her nomadic childhood as the granddaughter of vaudevillian performers, to her father’s abandonment of the family and her years as a teenage runaway, her beginnings at Los Angeles’ Troubadour club, to her tumultuous relationship with Tom Waits, her battle with drugs and longevity as a woman in rock and roll. At its core, “Last Chance Texaco” is the story of a woman who beat all odds and grew up to become one of the most legendary artists of her time, turning adversity and hopelessness into timeless music.
The book release event will be hosted on April 6 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the courtyard of the iconic Preservation Hall. The evening will feature a lively and in-depth conversation with Jones and WWOZ talent Jamie Dell’Apa. They will discuss Jones’ remarkable life and career and share excerpts from the memoir.

NEW BEER’S EVE
New Beer’s Eve – April 6th
With visions of pints and pounders hopping in their heads, beer connoisseurs prepare for the day ahead.
Barley and Malt flavored popcorn at their side, peanut shells polishing the floor and a bowl of beer nuts on the table aside,
Men and women everywhere grin with pride as they look to the clock and say,
“Why should we wait? Let’s begin this night before it’s too late! It’s New Beer’s Eve after all! A feat not too small.”
They tiptoe to the fridge, taking a peek inside, only to discover the shelves are bare!
“What shall we do? We have no more brew!”
“Stock up we must to avoid this shame, for who shall we blame?”
“For no wine will do. It’s National Beer Day for crying out loud! I beg! We must have a keg!”
Ambers and Ales, light beer (no siree – no pansies around here-ee) stout and pales.
Let us be wise and go to bed now. Responsible we are, we’ll behave at the bar.
Come join us you must! Friday or bust!
Come, family and friends, drink lagers or porters and we’ll make amends for last New Beer’s Eve and some creepy guy named Steve.**
On this holiday, kick up your heels while tipping back your stein. If I’m line dancing keep your hands off mine.
This night can get long just like this rhyme. Hey bartender, fill ‘er up this time!
We’ve danced and we’ve laughed. Drank Belgians and Pilsners. It’s time to go home now and on the way, we’ll stop for some chow.
This night is long spent and so am I. I thought I was winning but it’s the bed spinning. Good thing it’s New Beer’s Eve and this is a dream so I won’t heave.
NATIONAL CARAMEL POPCORN DAY
Each year on April 6th, National Caramel Popcorn Day conjures up memories of fairs, sporting events, and fun snacking.
In January, we celebrated National Popcorn Day. Now, we add delicious caramel popcorn to the calendar, one of America’s favorite snacks. For many people, this chewy or crunchy caramel popcorn treat is an all-time favorite.
Combining popcorn and molasses began in the early 1800s. However, caramel was prevalent as well, and with the production of Cracker Jack, the popularity was ever-increasing. Invented by Frederick Rueckheim, the popcorn merchant dabbled with creating a new snack. An immigrant from Germany to Chicago, he enlisted his brother, Louis, to help. After adding molasses and nuts, their snack was ready for an introduction to the masses.
Like many famous foods, Cracker Jack gained popularity on the stage of the 1893 World’s Fair. Other foods to grab the public’s attention at similar expositions include cotton candy and the ice cream cone. While they weren’t invented there, nor did they make their debut, they sure did capture the imagination and make a lasting impression there.
However, in 1908, something happened to connect Cracker Jack and baseball permanently in the American psyche, while also launching the business into high gear. A young entertainer by the name of Jack Norworth penned a catchy tune referencing Cracker Jack and the American pastime. The song “Take Me Out To The Ballgame” not only caused sales of the snackfood to soar but the fans of the game continue to sing the song at every game.
There are many commercial brands and forms of caramel corn available in grocery stores, cinemas, and convenience stores. There are also specialty brands available in stores, gift catalogs, and online.

Derby Gisclair
Selling hot waffles from a horse-drawn wagon was not unique to the DeKemel family about who we posted earlier today. Louis Gandolini sold waffles four for a nickel from his yellow wagon with red trimmings for 40 years throughout the French Quarter and was as popular a photo opportunity for tourists as the Roman candy man. Gandolini is shown in his wagon shortly before the high cost of ingredients pushed him into retirement. By all accounts he was the last of his kind.

Derby Gisclair

Henri DeKemel came to New Orleans from France and began selling waffles from a gasoline-fueled stove atop his horse-drawn wagon shown here circa 1900. His son Matthew would walk beside the wagon and draw the attention of customers by playing his bugle. He became known as "Buglin' Sam the Waffle Man" when he took over his father’s business. An order of waffles was six for 50-cents.
Shown below in 1963, Matthew ("Buglin' Sam") supplemented his waffle business by joining the New Orleans police force and working as a jazz trumpeter, playing with Sharkey Bonano and Tony Almerico, as well as spicing up the "Call to the Post" at the Fair Grounds with a snippet of "Way Down Yonder in New Orleans" or another local favorite. “The Waffle Man’s Call,” written by Steve Loyocano and Charles Seaglione, was recorded by Johnny Bayersdorffer and his Jazzola Novelty Orchestra for Okeh Records. In addition to being a very popular act at Spanish Fort, the group toured the country and was very popular in Chicago. Loyocano was the banjo player for the band.
His son Maurice "Babe" DeKemel followed in the business until his father's death in 1967 when it became too expensive a proposition to sell waffles from either a horse-drawn wagon or a small push-cart.

exhibit
The Louisiana State Museum, working in collaboration with the renowned Musée du Quai Branly–Jacques Chirac in Paris, has announced the opening of a new exhibition, Mystery in Motion: African American Masking and Spirituality in Mardi Gras

In addition to a stunning exhibit in the Presbytere, there also are several virtual programs offered in connection with the program.

This new exhibition inside the Presbytère on Jackson Square examines the direct influence of multicultural spirituality within the carnival traditions of Black New Orleanians. Due to the pandemic, you will not find many Black masking Indians on the streets this carnival season, but you will see their elaborate suits and learn about their use and inspiration inside the museum’s galleries. The exhibit will be on display through November 28, 2021,
“Mystery in Motion is a groundbreaking exhibition highlighting the vibrant carnival traditions of the Black community in New Orleans and it offers an excellent way to celebrate Mardi Gras safely during this current pandemic,” said Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser.
Mystery in Motion guest curators Kim Vaz-Deville, Ph.D., and Ron Bechet of Xavier University of Louisiana explore spirituality in Mardi Gras through the presentation of more than two dozen Black masking Indian suits, carnival costumes, and masking objects produced in New Orleans, juxtaposed with extraordinary African artifacts that are representative of the cultures, religions, and artistry that influenced their creation. These exceptional African objects will be on loan from the collections of the Musée du Quai Branly–Jacques Chirac and Southern University at New Orleans.
“There is so much happening on Mardi Gras day, it is impossible to take in all the sights, sounds, and experiences. The intent of the exhibition is to offer an opportunity to contemplate the spiritual dimensions of African American Mardi Gras masking that are hidden in plain view,” said Kim Vaz-Deville, Ph.D.

Additionally, several virtual events will be held in conjunction with the exhibition that are free and open to the public:

Every Wednesday, from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on February 24 through March 31, teaching artist Ausettua AmorAmenkum will lead a dance course called African Dance in New Orleans: Online Course at the Louisiana State Museum [link.mediaoutreach.meltwater.com]. The six-week course will explore African traditions and influences on New Orleans culture and dance. To register visit the course’s event page [link.mediaoutreach.meltwater.com].

On View at the CAC's St. Joseph Street Warehouse!

Weekend: April 10 | Free AdmissionThe CAC is excited to host an exhibition and auction featuring New Orleans' famous "house floats" from Krewe of Red Beans' "Hire a Mardi Gras Artist" initiative! Artistic creations from select house floats will be on view all together for the first time, and available for purchase through an online auction that will benefit New Orleans culture-bearers and the CAC.

“Community collaboration through art is at the heart of New Orleans’ unique culture. The CAC is thrilled that locals and visitors will have a last chance to see these incredible works of art and take home a piece of Carnival history,” states George Scheer, Executive Director of the CAC.
“The House Floats exhibition and auction allows Krewe of Red Beans to continue our community-wide effort to raise funds and support ‘Feed the Second Line,’ our effort to create a true safety net for New Orleans culture," says Devin De Wulf, founder of the Hire a Mardi Gras Artist Initiative. "The community rallied and supported the ‘Hire A Mardi Gras Artist’ initiative and the artists delivered much needed Carnival magic.”
Artistic sponsorship for the exhibition and auction comes from The Domain Companies: "Domain is proud to support the Krewe of Red Beans as Arts Sponsor of its upcoming House Floats exhibit and auction at the CAC," says Matt Schwartz, Co-Chief Executive Officer of The Domain Companies. New Orleans' culture bearers make this city the unique place we all love; they've been among the hardest hit by the pandemic and they need our support now more than ever. With the Hire A Mardi Gras Artist initiative, the Krewe of Red Beans has again come up with a creative way to provide that support, celebrate their talent and give everyone a taste of the Carnival we all missed this year."
Admission will be free and open to the public weekends only, March 20 through April 4, from 11:30 am to 4:30 pm. Advance online reservations required on a timed-ticketed basis of 50 people per hour. COVID-19 guidelines will be enforced, including social distancing and mask-wearing. Learn more and reserve your timeslot today!

Exhibition Celebrates the Social Aid and Pleasure Clubs of New Orleans
NEW ORLEANS – The sights and sounds of a defining local cultural practice, second line parades, come alive in “Dancing in the Streets: Social Aid and Pleasure Clubs of New Orleans,” on view at The Historic New Orleans Collection to June 13, 2021.
Assembled in collaboration with more than 30 community partners and club members, the exhibition offers an intimate look at New Orleans street parades while also providing historical context of the tradition. Black mutual aid societies were founded in the 19th century to support African Americans and Afro-Creoles at a time when they were denied many social services, and second line parades are one of their most enduring legacies. Full of color, music, footwork, friends and neighbors, second line parades provide a weekly physical and symbolic gathering place for Black history and expression.

In the exhibition, displayed on the third level of THNOC’s Tricentennial Wing at 520 Royal Street in the French Quarter, parade regalia—from full suits to elaborate baskets and fans—gives viewers an up-close look at the unique artistry of second line parades. Images from a dozen contemporary photographers, including Judy Cooper, whose vision inspired the origin of this show, wrap around three gallery walls to re-create a second line from start to finish.

. COVID-19 safety protocols—facemasks, timed ticketing and limited gallery capacity to ensure social distancing—will be in place,

Farmstand Live Event Comes To Shrine On Airline—Local Food Meets
 Local Music
Taking place on the two Saturdays of what are traditionally Jazz Fest weekends (April 24 and May 1, 2021), the first two events of Farmstand Live will take place at the Shrine on Airline and feature live performances by some of New Orleans’ critically acclaimed musicians; prepared dinners from the city’s finest restaurants; and farm fresh produce boxes from Crescent City Farmer’s Market.
Farmstand Entertainment is the brainchild of Emily Vanlandingham, founder/chef of Locally Preserved, New Orleans first all-natural food manufacturer. Vanlandingham, who recently earned a master’s degree in food business from the Culinary Institute of America, witnessed the economic downfall of New Orleans during the pandemic, just as she was completing the last year of her studies. “When the pandemic carried on for months on end, and I was working on my final project, I knew I needed to pivot,” says Vanlandingham. “I set out to find a way to change the distribution models of New Orleans’ most profitable sectors. We rely heavily on our incredible live music, on our renowned dining scene, and on our year-round farming. Farmstand Entertainment, and specifically, Farmstand Live, is a way to combine the three and pump money back into the economy.”
The ticketed drive in experience for April 24 beginning at 4 p.m. features Dumpstaphunk (for their official Where Do We Go from Here? album release party), Smoke n Bones, and SOUL Brass Band with prepared boxed dinners by Cochon Butcher, Justine, Charcuterie of NOLA, and Addis NOLA. (Optional Bywater Bakery dessert will be available for an additional $10 and cocktails, beer, and wine will be available for purchase.)
Saturday May 1 will featured Jon Cleary ad the Absolute Monster Gentlemen, George Porter Jr. and the Runnin; Pardoners, and Honey Island Swamp Band with food from La Petite Grocery, NOLA Charcuterie, Luncheon NOLA, and Cochon Butcher (all served in boxes with vegetarian options available). Dee-Lightful Cupcakes will e available for an additional $7 and alcohol will be available for purchase.
Ticket packages start at $90 per person. For more information, visit here. Note: All people in vehicles must have a ticket and tickets will not be sold at the gate. There is a minimum of 2 people per car and a maximum of 8 people total.
Presale tickets go on sale Thursday, April 1 and General Public tickets go on sale Monday, April 5. All shows are rain or shine. Farmstand Live will take place at the Shrine on Airline, the 10,000-seat stadium located at 6000 Airline Drive in Metairie, Louisiana.

Wine & Food Experience moves to summer
The New Orleans Wine & Food Experience has announced tickets are now on sale for the 2021 event. Due to COVID-19 safety precautions, organizers have moved NOWFE to a mid-summer event, taking place June 9-13. “We are excited about our summer plans,” states Aimee Brown, NOWFE Executive Director. “We will have several of our popular events, however, coming together safely is most important. Rest assured NOWFE 2021 will be a safe place to share your love of food and wine.” Events will have limited attendance; however, some events will have additional time slots added. “We’ve created several ticket packages to help guide our guests through the best experience that fits their needs,” said Joey Worley, NOWFE President. “With varying levels, everyone can find something to fit their budget and their schedule.”

(Details for our Wednesday, June 9th Wine Dinner Series, Labs and Experiences will be announced soon.)
