The Skokie School Home Scoop

Dear Skokie Community,

I hope you all enjoyed some special moments together with your families during Spring Break. As we look to the coming week, there are some changes taking place regarding room location and entry doors. We are helping the students to prepare for their transition to a full day, and this week will support us in acclimating to our new arrival procedures. The new entry doors (same for both AM and PM) can be viewed by clicking here. Teachers prepared students for their new learning spaces (if applicable) and the new entry locations (if applicable) the week prior to Spring Break.

As we take steps towards returning to a more normal school day, I wanted to provide you with some information regarding lunch, as I know this is a much anticipated portion of the day! There will be four lunch periods at Skokie, two for 5th graders and two for 6th graders. The lunch times are listed below, along with the full day schedule. As lunch periods are 32 minutes long, and we are planning to be outside weather permitting, it is our hope that students can stay with us at school for lunch.

When we are able to eat lunch outside, students will be sitting six feet apart, and they will be able to talk and socialize while they eat. Students will be grouped together by their advisories. Once they are finished eating, our team has created a variety of safe, engaging activities that students can partake in together. Students will also have the option to chat with friends if they prefer.  If we need to eat inside, students will be seated as far apart as possible in their classrooms with desk shields up, facing forward. While there will be no talking while students are eating, we are working together to create some engaging listening material that students can tune into while they eat lunch. After students finish eating (10 minutes max), we have a collection of activities designed for indoor participation, as well.

As you consider what to pack for your child's lunch, you may want to utilize a cooler pack, as we will not have a place to refrigerate lunches. Please keep in mind that students will not have access to a microwave and lunches will need to be nut free. I will be working together with our nurse to provide some ideas for lunch, as we recognize this limits some common options. Thank you for your support in packing lunches that will support the health and safety of all of our learners.

In the coming weeks, our teachers will be supporting students in understanding what their new schedules will look like come April 19th. They will also continue to build a connection between students in both the AM and PM sections of the advisory so that there is familiarity when students join together in the classroom. Please note that many of our 6th graders will be with new exploratory teachers for the arts, KW, and Spanish, as advisories are attending these exploratories together rather than mixing together as in years past. With that being said, we have made special arrangements for our students to attend Band, Orchestra, and French, as well. Students will be receiving information regarding how this will work into their schedule in the coming weeks, and will have an opportunity to do a practice run through on April 15th so they are ready to go on April 19th.

Track Season (For 6th-8th Graders)
There will be a short informational zoom meeting going over the upcoming Track season.  We will talk about the procedures and rules of the season, and introduce the coaches to the team.  Please join us on Zoom at 3:45 on Tuesday, April 6.

Take care,

Adventures in Learning 2021 runs from  June 14, 2021 - July 16, 2021
REGISTRATION NOW OPEN!

We are excited to welcome students back to in-person Adventures in Learning! This summer the structure of the program has been modified as we continue to navigate the impact of COVID--19 and  prioritize the health and safety of our campers, families and staff.  The in-person program options being offered adhere to the District's current mitigation plan and successful student cohort and pod framework.

The Primary Program, for children Pre-K (4 years old by June 1st, 2021) and K - 1st Grade (5 years old by September 1st, 2021) will be housed at Crow Island School. The program is held Monday - Friday, beginning at 8:35 a.m. and ending at 11:30 a.m.

The General Program, for grades 2-8, will be held at the Carleton Washburne School. To protect the health and safety of our students and staff and minimize the need for cohort quarantines, up to 4 distinct courses will be grouped together to create a "pod." This is a change from our typical program structure where students select individual 40 minute classes. Implementing this change allows for cohorts of students to remain intact and thus limits COVID-19 exposure while minimizing the need for and impact of exposure creating large-scale quarantines that would significantly impede a successful AIL experience.   The 5-week program will be offered as a 3-week and 2-week session, to ensure campers all have the opportunity to enjoy their favorite classes. When registering parents will be asked to select two pods from the options provided.

The Alliance for Early Childhood's PANDEMIC PARENTING TOOLS & TIPS: Recognizing Anxiety and Depression in Young Children
April 8 from 7-8 p.m
No one likes to think of young children as being anxious or depressed and yet, children experience a wide range of emotions. The pandemic has shifted experiences and supports that families are typically able to access. This leaves children and families vulnerable. Young children won't come out and say, "I'm struggling, can you help?" Instead, they act out in challenging ways. Come learn about the signs and symptoms of depression and anxiety in young children, and how our own feelings can get stirred up by this topic. We'll talk about healthy vs. unhealthy struggles, and how to support our children so they can grow in their own resilience. Programming facilitated by Molly Pope, I/ECMHC, Parent Coach, and Speaker and Trainer.Register Here to attend live or have the recording emailed to you.
