DISTRICT NEWS
September 2020
DISTRICT MISSION: The mission of the Cedarburg School District is to provide an exemplary education that challenges students in a nurturing environment to develop into lifelong learners, to become responsible adults, and to achieve their goals and dreams.
The District is pleased to be sharing an update following our first month of school. We are adjusting to new schedules and routines and continuing to make connections with each other as a learning community. The best resources for answering many of your questions related to our return to In-Person and Virtual Learning can be found in your weekly communication from your student’s school or on the CSD Re-entry Plan website. We will post new information and/or updates to our policies and procedures there, including regular updates to the FAQ. In addition, we will be updating the site each week to include a COVID-19 Dashboard that provides up-to-date information regarding COVID-19 positive cases in isolation and exposure-related quarantines affecting students and staff on a given day.

Thank you for spending the time to stay informed by reading our district updates. Throughout the school year, watch for messages from the district on our COVID-19 response along with the latest news at the beginning of each month.
Stay Safe To Stay Open
We are in our fourth week of school and all things considered, we are managing this COVID environment. Our virtual students are finding their rhythm and showing their commitment, which I witnessed first hand during a class meeting. I happened to be the special guest in a first grade classroom and was thoroughly impressed by their engagement.

Our in-person students are doing a wonderful job of complying with our new expectations, including the mask mandate. Parents, thank you for supporting our efforts.

Our teachers are putting in a herculean effort to provide access and a quality experience. Join me in thanking our teachers for their MVP performance!

As we enter a new month, we are seeing a spike in our community COVID positive cases. I worry that the community spike will trickle into our schools, which may jeopardize our instructional model. Please, please practice the three proven interventions to help mitigate the spread; wear a face covering, wash hands frequently and follow social distancing protocols. Each time there’s a positive case in our schools, countless hours are spent contact tracing, sending out letters, making phone calls, sanitizing, preparing for virtual instruction, securing a sub (if available), etc… Help us keep our schools as safe as possible, by doing your part and encouraging others to do their part to be safe so we can continue to enjoy the environment we have worked so hard to create.

Be well and thank you for your continued support.

Preventing COVID-19 in Our Schools
This helpful short video (run-time, 2:43) from the Washington Ozaukee Public Health Department explains the importance of a remote learning requirement for students who have been exposed to or test positive for COVID-19.
Mask Mandate

It was announced on September 22nd that Governor Evers extended the mask mandate until November 21, 2020. Parents and visitors, please be a good role model for all of our students and wear your face covering whenever you are on school grounds. If you can maintain six feet of social distancing while outside, (and you are away from the school buildings when students are entering/exiting), then the mask can be removed. This appropriate modeling helps students understand the importance of wearing face-covering around classmates as we all try to remain healthy and safe. If you are not comfortable complying with this request especially during elementary student drop-off and pickup, please feel free to wait on the sidewalk along the street.
Building Resilience in Children
Occasionally, we share resources with families that highlight strategies for building positive and productive coping skills in children. Today we are sharing some digital resources on developing resilience and the importance of well-developed resiliency skills to help students manage and prosper during difficult times. The ability to meet and overcome challenges in ways that maintain or promote well-being plays an essential role in how students learn to achieve academic and personal goals. Resilient young people feel a sense of control over their own destinies.
Free Meals School Lunch Program
Effective, Tuesday, September 8, 2020, all students of the Cedarburg School District are eligible to receive free breakfast (9-12) and lunch (4K-12) meals for free. This is possible because the USDA released COVID-19: Child Nutrition Program, providing nationwide waivers for the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) and the National School Lunch Program’s Seamless Summer Option (SSO). These waivers extend through December 31, 2020 or until funding runs out. Families who have children enrolled 100% virtually will be able to pick up a 5-day meal pack on Tuesdays from 2-2:30 pm outside of the CHS Fieldhouse. For more information, please refer to the attached flyer
Welcome To The District Office
As we started the new school year, we were thrilled to welcome our new Instructional Technology Specialist, Grace Tahtinen, this fall. She began the year as a substitute for Krista Penrod who is currently on family leave through November. Her role is to support our teachers and students with technology in the classrooms, whether that be in-person or virtual. Grace comes to us from the Hope Christian Schools in Milwaukee, where she was a middle school science teacher. She has worked with Canvas as a teacher and student, Clever, Google Suite, and taught remotely. Please join us in welcoming Grace to our district office team!
CSD, In partnership with Riveredge (RNC), welcomes a new Scientist in Residence (SIR), Rachel Race! Rachel comes to the district with a broad range of environmental education experiences, and is currently on staff with RNC. Rachel will be working with teachers throughout the district with a focus on taking inside lessons outdoors, working with the 6-8 science team, Webster's Green Team, supporting the high school’s Environmental Club, and 4K-5th Grade RNC "Fieldtrips" (in-person at each school). These in-school experiences will also have companion experiences for our at-home learners! We are excited to have Rachel as the district’s SIR for the final year of the partnership.
District Open House is Coming Spring 2021
We are excited to begin planning for a socially-distanced community open house at each of our newly-completed schools next spring. Once the High School Phase 2 is complete early next year, this will give the community an opportunity to take self-guided tours throughout the new and renovated spaces and allow parents, students, and community members to tour a single or multiple buildings. More details will be provided closer to the date, adjustments may be needed based on current COVID-19 protocols.

In the meantime, through our construction update, parent and community newsletters, CSD website, and social media, we will begin to highlight the new spaces and share photos in a campaign leading up to the open house. Below is a sneak peek of some of those spaces!

As always, we thank the community for their continued support of our schools. Strong schools, strong community!
Join Us in Showing Appreciation
October 4-10 is Wisconsin Association of School Boards (WASB) National School Board Appreciation Week. This week is a time to show appreciation and build awareness of the vital function an elected board of education pays in our community.

October is also a great opportunity to say “thank you” to our Cedarburg principals during National Principals Month. The key to student success is a great school, and the key to a great school is a great principal!

One District, One Team Making a Difference.

Cedarburg School District Updated Logo
Over the last year, we began a brand discovery process to create a cohesive brand message and an overall communication plan using multiple data sources gathered over the last 4 years. We are in phase 1 of that Brand Discovery Plan which included a new district logo. The purpose was to get a consistent district logo integrated using each school's logo and colors for a unified look across the district. Noted as an area of opportunity with the new building project for a cohesive district logo, the time was right to make the change this year. It will slowly replace the old logo as we progress through the year.
