Dear Roy Cloud Families,
We only have a couple of weeks remaining before the completion of this unique school year, and I wanted to get started in preparing you for a few end of the year activities and logistics.
First and foremost, please join me in congratulating the students in our eighth grade class who will be promoted this year and moving onto High School. The staff and I are so proud of this group of students, many of whom have been with us since kindergarten. They have written final essays of reflection and some have practiced speeches to be delivered and shared during their
Virtual Online Ceremony
. The traditional montage of the children through the years, the Principal’s Award, Bonnie Scheppler Award, the RCTA Grit Award and all student speeches will be shared digitally with our eighth grade families for viewing at their own convenience in the safety of Sheltering In Place. This format creates a lasting memory for all to view and cherish in years to come.
Last night, the RCSD School Board approved to change the last day of student instruction to Friday, May 29. All student instruction will end on May 29.
Items to Return:
If you have textbooks, classroom books that belong to your teacher, or readers from Ms. Lawlor, please look at the chart below and return your items at your designated day/time.
Items to Pick Up
: Pre-purchased yearbooks and personal items left in classrooms will be distributed on your designated day/time as you drive through the Red Oak Parking lot.
Process for Returning and Receiving Items
- Please make sure you have a SIGN in your window with your child's last name, first name, teacher, and Room number. (Here is the link for the printable document. You can also make your own with the appropriate information)
- Place all items to return to the school in your trunk or back seat of your car. There will be collection tables in the Red Oak Parking lot, with staff members ready to collect and inventory your returned items.
- Remain in your car. Show your window sign and pop your trunk or roll down the back window. Staff will be present (wearing masks and gloves) to collect the items you are returning and place your personal items (including yearbook) in your car.
Please come at your designated time.
Your teachers look forward to saying “GoodBye” to you at these times.
I recognize this may mean more than one trip to school per family and apologize in advance for this. However, we are mindful of the health of our staff and families, city ordinances of crowd gathering, neighbors, street crowding, as well as efficiency of materials distribution. The staff and I appreciate your cooperation.
|
|
For ease of traffic flow, we ask that you turn right to enter the Red Oak lot coming from Glennan and exit turning right towards Emerald Hill Road. No foot traffic. Car pick up only.
If you have any questions, regarding this information, please email me at
[email protected]
.
If you are not able to come at your designated time, a limited number of staff (no teachers) will be on site Friday, May 29, 2:30 - 3:30 PM. Any items not picked up will be donated.
The staff and I look forward to seeing you at your assigned times to say “GoodBye”, as we prepare to leave for the months of summer.
In partnership and good health,
Diane Prystas, Principal

RCSD Grading Policy Spring 2020
|
The following grading policy for the emergency school closure was approved by the RCSD Board of Trustees last night:
Grades TK-5: Use scores from Trimester 2 as the final end of year grades. The 3rd trimester scores are left blank. New teacher comments are completed.
Grades 6-8: Grades entered in early March prior to school closures will need to move over to the Passing/Incomplete marking with teacher comments. The teacher comments will allow the teacher to give affirmations to students who are able to excel during this difficult time but also be able to document those students who have not been able to complete assignments without marking adversely affecting grading. Honor Roll will only be calculated based on Trimester 1 and 2 grades.
Record cards will be mailed home between June 4 and June 8 and will include a note that the report card reflects the COVID-19 School Closure time period.

Provide Input on School Attendance Boundary Change
|
RCSD seeks the input of the community as the school district studies its attendance zone to shift the current attendance boundary areas of neighborhood schools. The district’s school boundary change study comes after the moves and mergers of programs and consolidation of schools.
A demographer’s presentation took place last night at the School Board Meeting.

to view the slides.
Two
very preliminary
scenerios were presented. Here's how these preliminary scenerios would impact Roy Cloud:
- Scenerio 1 does not change Roy Cloud's boundaries.
- Scenerio 2 assigns to Roy Cloud the Woodside Hills neighborhood (currently assigned to Henry Ford) and the area east of Woodside Road/south of Selby Lane (formerly assigned to Selby Lane School). Refer to the blue outline on the image below.

This page includes the latest updates from RCSD including next steps and a form for community input (form scheduled to go live on May 22).

School Site Council Positions Open for Fall
|
The
School Site Council (SSC) is a group of parents, teachers, and school administrators that meet once a month to review and discuss the School Site Plan, and to discuss and make decisions regrading use of site money and Measure U funds to meet our site goals.
There are three open parent positions on SSC. Applications for these positions, and elections if necessary, will occur in August/September. The term runs for two school years, 2020-21 and 2021-22.

School Supplies for 2020-21
|
PTO has partnered with 1st Day School Supplies again this year to offer parents the option to pre-order school supplies for 2020-21. Orders must be placed by July 1st.
|
Items like calculators, computer mice or headphones are available as optional items. Additionally, some teachers have included "Wish List Items" that are available for optional purchase.
Distribution Changes for This Year:
Kits and optional items will be shipped directly to your home before school starts. Teacher Wish List items will be shipped directly to school for distribution to your child’s classroom. Shipping costs are built into the cost of the kit.
New this year... Wish Lists for the Makery and the Garden!
Commonly Asked Questions:
Does the PTO mark up the cost of these supplies?
No, this is provided as a convenient service for parents.
Do I purchase a separate kit for each student?
Yes, one for each student. They are customized based on grade level.
How were the supply kits put together?
Each grade level teacher team went through the 1st Day Supplies website and selected these exact supplies (brand, color, etc), to be used in their classrooms for 2020-21.
I prefer to buy my own supplies elsewhere. Can I do that?
Absolutely! Click the link and view the list for your grade level. Note the colors for folders and other materials. It's helpful to purchase the same items for consistency in the classroom. School supplies lists will also be on the school and PTO websites in early August.
Is financial support available if needed?
Yes, if purchasing supplies is a financial hardship for your family, please
email Marybeth Milionis
by June 26th
and PTO will confidentially purchase for your student(s).

The
2020-21 budget was voted on and approved on Tuesday night at the PTO meeting. Due to the uncertainty around our ability to fundraise next year and the uncertainty of the viability of programs next year due to COVID, this budget is considered a starting point and will be re-evaluated this summer and throughout next school year. Only the items in blue will be formally committed to now, as required by RCSD.

FfF #34: Best Handwashing Practices
|
Without hitting the
snow levels from previous years
, 2020 looks to be a
drought year again
. As we spend more time at home, we should be paying attention to our water-using habits. Given it is important to wash our hands for a full 20 seconds it is equally important that we do turn off the water while we do so.
But there is even more to hand washing. Many soaps contain a lot of toxins.
Here’s a list of the ones
to try and avoid when making your soap choice. Also several companies now offer
refill packages
rather than having a lot of plastic land in landfill - or better yet, use
bar soap
.
Hand sanitizers are often the alternative when there is no running water near - did you know you
can
easily make your own
without all of this extra packaging - just make sure you follow a formula with enough alcohol contents to fight the Coronavirus.
