At 4:00 p.m. Monday our teachers will begin to evaluate all the students' work for 4th Quarter Progress Reports which will be released in early May. If you have a student at Lake Nona, please make sure that they do not miss this cutoff time.
Thank you once again to all of our students and families for their distance learning efforts this past week. Please keep up the momentum and great effort again this week as we are already entering the second half of the final nine-week quarter. As for this issue, we have included a couple of online opportunities that I think will be of interest to our families such as the CodeBreak guest speaker presentations (last week was Bill Gates).
Enjoy your week as best you can under the circumstances and please continue to follow the recommended health safety guidelines every day. To our Knights, remember that we all miss you very much!

Student Assignment Expectation - Weekly Attendance Quiz
(very important)
All teachers will post an assignment on Monday detailing their expectations or outline for the week. Students are to acknowledge they understand the expectations by answering a one question assignment quiz for each class; this will serve as your attendance check-in. The answer is due by noon Friday of that week. Students will be marked absent if the weekly attendance quiz is not completed.
* All student work needs to be submitted by April 27th by 4:00 PM for Quarter 4 Progress Reports. Parents will be able to view the Progress Report in Skyward May 6th, 2020.

Students and parents may need to get additional support or clarification on an assignment. LNMS teachers will be available during these posted office hours.

Knight Digital Learning Schedule
The following schedule allows LNMS to provide dedicated time to each content area. Some teachers may choose to interact with live teaching sessions and live help support during the window of time. Students can follow this schedule in order to ensure a class is not missed throughout the week.

 Family Table Time is committed to making mealtime fun and bringing families closer together by helping them communicate in a fun and interactive way. Family Table Time creates opportunities by providing printable content in English and Spanish for families.
Each family activity kit is designed to help families establish and sustain lifelong healthy habits, traditions, and memories.
During the month of April and May, the content addresses character values. Each week, families will have an easy to follow guide of activities to address attitude, talent, environment, trust, gratitude, sacrifice, family and accomplishments.
The resources are free and appropriate for school-aged children. For access to the content, each family can sign-up to receive immediate downloads at Family Table Time.

Stronger Than COVOD-19 Community Action Survey
|
The Florida Department of Health (FDH) is requesting the distribution of a survey to students, parents, teachers, administrators, and community members. As Florida continues to work to fight the spread of COVID-19, the FDH launched a new survey, Stronger Than COVID-19 Community Action Survey. This survey is intended for Florida residents to anonymously answer a brief series of questions which the Department will use to help inform and improve the state's response to COVID-19. Knights' Celebrate Differences
|
April is World Autism Month, dedicated to increasing awareness about Autism Spectrum Disorder. The Autism Society, the nation's leading grassroots autism organization, launched the observance month to "promote autism awareness, inclusion and self-determination for all, and assure that each person with ASD is provided the opportunity to achieve the highest possible quality of life."
The theme for their April 2020 campaign is #CelebrateDifferences.

Code Break Wednesday Afternoon Presentations
|
The next special guest speaker be this coming Wednesday, April 29 at 1pm. Bill Gates was last week's guest. *
Code Break is about more than education and computer science. It's about offering inspiration and community at a time when families are alone. Bill Gates and Microsoft Turned PCs into Household Appliances
Gates and friend Paul Allen started Microsoft in Albuquerque, N.M., in 1975. Early on, they created a programming language for the MITS Altair 8800, a "hobby kit" PC. However, Allen and Gates had been "partners in crime" since their days at Lakeside School in Seattle, according to the 2012 memoir Allen wrote, "Idea Man." The two met when Gates was just in eighth grade and Allen was in tenth grade.

Microsoft's big break came in 1980 when IBM, impressed by the startup's software prowess, picked it to create the operating system for its first PC. In 1981, IBM introduced the PC, running a 16-bit operating system called MS-DOS to control basic functions. (What many people do not know about this critical moment in time is that Gates did not even have a product ready to deliver to IBM. He and his team worked 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to make the deadline. Bill Gates said later that he never doubted for a moment that he would not succeed.)
Microsoft built on that victory by developing more software for the PC. In 1983 it rolled out its MS Word word-processing system which many of our students and nearly all of the business world uses today. The same year, it set out to develop graphical screen icons to make PCs easier to use.
It introduced the first version of MS Office productivity tools in 1989. The next year it launched Windows 3.0, giving PCs an improved graphical user interface.
By 1990, Microsoft's revenue topped $1.8 billion, boosted by software licensing revenue for IBM PCs and clones made by various companies. The company also employed 5,635 people, double the number just two years earlier.
"At Microsoft, there are lots of brilliant ideas, but the image is that they all come from the top - I'm afraid that's not quite right," Gates said in a 1991 interview.
Since 1990, Microsoft has had number of tremendous successes such as Windows 95 along with a few setbacks like the acquisition setback of competitor Intuit by regulators. "Success is a lousy teacher. It seduces smart people into thinking they can't lose," Gates wrote in his 1995 book, "The Road Ahead."
The lesson for our Knights? Personal computing as you know it today would not exist without Bill Gates and his friend Paul Allen. Bill Gates never let loose of his passion for computing and built an empire with a boyhood friend. He is an excellent example with respect to a number of personal success traits, but these three certainly stand out: 1) Decide upon your dreams and goals. Write them down.; 2) Never stop learning. Education matters - get all you can!; and 3) Don't be afraid to innovate. Be different!
