The Lowry Letter®

Week of 5/20/2020

In our daily work, we try to read and talk to people who have a different perspective on current events. It reminds us of this quote from a favorite author, Louis L’Amour: "One thing has always been true: That book or that person who can give me an idea or a new slant on an old idea is my friend."

One of our objectives with this letter is to provide a new or different slant on some of the things we are confronting each day and we hope it continues to be helpful.

We think: you need to watch The Last Dance. We mentioned it a few weeks back and it has gotten better each week. The concluding installments aired on Sunday and are available on the ESPN app. On the same subject, this article struck a chord with us.

We read: this article about the risks associated with the transmission of COVID-19. Particularly interesting is the section on “How much virus is released into the environment?” It makes a good case for face coverings.

We went: to the beach for our first trip outside of Alachua County in several months. It was wonderful and there was no problem maintaining a good distance from other beachgoers. We hope that you can take advantage of increasing opportunities to make this strange situation a bit more enjoyable.

Q: Where will the economic recovery start? Any particular industry or region?

A: It’s helpful to look at some recent pandemic data, summarized in this post . There has been notable progress which supports economic reopening, but the recovery will be regional. If the virus does not surge in response to these efforts, the early openers may show the best results.

The dramatic decline in retail sales and industrial production might lead to sharp improvements in those sectors, though the future of retail remains uncertain. Many well-known names are experiencing significant struggles and bankruptcy rumors continue for some.
