Welcome to the April 2020 CornerShot Newsletter
Hello. Amid the COVID-19 pandemic and in this context of social isolation, Field Hockey BC is trying its best to keep our community engaged while planning for the future, considering a responsible return to play once things are back to normal. Meanwhile, please enjoy this issue of our Newsletter and stay safe!
FHBC Trick Challenge: submit your video!
While we are all spending time at home, we might as well have fun!

With that in mind, Field Hockey BC is challenging our members to show us their best trick with a stick and ball.

Submit your video to info@fieldhockeybc.com.

Everyone will have their videos shared on our social media.

The winner will be selected by our staff and will receive one Leisure Line hoodie and a t-shirt.

If you don't want to take part in the challenge, but wish to share a video of you staying active, we also encourage you to do so!

Send us your videos or photos. We are happy to share whatever it is that our community is doing to pass the time during social isolation.
FHBC have been in touch with municipalities to provide our membership information on the current status regarding the booking of field throughout the province. This will be updated regularly until activities in British Columbia return to normal. Access the page here.
Due to the ongoing COVID-19 situation, this page is dedicated to providing online resources to keep athletes and community members engaged in field hockey away from the pitch. The resources are broken into 4 categories: individual skills, footwork and agility, fitness and education.

In there, you will find full online professional, National and Provincial field hockey matches, technical skills and fitness videos that can be practiced at home or in your backyard. The purpose is to give our athletes of varying skill levels some ideas to keep up with field hockey safely and in compliance with government regulations around social distancing.

Make sure to check back as we will be posting new content regularly.

This statement will be updated in time, whenever new resolutions and instructions from government and health authorities have been considered by the Field Hockey BC Board of Directors.

The Community Umpiring course is available online through the FHBC website (register here). This course costs $25 and will prepare you for the next game where you will be able to complete the on field assessment.

The Provincial Coaching Education program has two modules that are digitally available online through The Locker. These modules are called Making Ethical Decisions and Making Headway.

Both these modules have their costs covered by FHBC and are also an element of the NCCP Coaching courses for field hockey.

Vancouver International Tournament (VIT) cancelled for 2020

As the Organized Sport Sector in BC responds to the rapidly changing situation with COVID-19, many municipalities are closing their facilities and today saw the City of Burnaby announce the closure of all facilities through May 31, 2020.

We continue to look forward to a responsible return to play and to again organizing the VIT for 2021.

Paul Bundy steps down as Men's National Team Head Coach
By FHC, originally posted on fieldhockey.ca

Paul Bundy has stepped down as the head coach of the Men’s National Team. Bundy, who has been head coach since 2017, announced the news this week.

“My intention was to step away from the program following the 2020 Olympic Games to take a year to care for my baby girl on a full-time basis,” he said. “With the Games moving to 2021, I have made the difficult decision to step away sooner than I had hoped.”

Bundy was first introduced as an assistant coach of the men’s national team in 2012 and took over as interim head coach in the summer of 2017. That fall, he was named permanent head coach and under his leadership, led the Red Caribou for the last three years.

With Bundy at the helm, Team Canada saw success at the FIH World League in 2017, qualifying them for the 2018 World Cup, in which they placed 11th. Then, in 2019, the team won the FIH Hockey Series Final in Malaysia, won a silver medal at the Pan American Games and secured an Olympic berth with a thrilling two-game victory over Ireland on home soil.

Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics postponed to Summer 2021
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) confirmed on March 30 that the 2020 Summer Olympic and Paralympic games will take place in Tokyo during the Summer of 2021.

The Olympic Games will be celebrated from July 23 to August 8 2021; the Paralympic Games will be celebrated from August 24 to September 5.

As the IOC statement reads: “ These new dates give the health authorities and all involved in the organisation of the Games the maximum time to deal with the constantly changing landscape and the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The new dates ... will provide sufficient time to finish the qualification process. The same heat mitigation measures as planned for 2020 will be implemented.
