GOLD MEDAL WINNER AT SKILLSUSA
Olivia Peterson took advantage of the opportunity to show off the skills she's learned at CLC at the SkillsUSA Collision Repair Technology competition where she earned the gold medal at the national level.

Peterson, a May 2022 graduate, made a career change from librarian to the automotive collision repair program. SkillsUSA not only helped with her skills, but her career as well.

β€œMy name is now out there,” she said. β€œAt the same time, it gave me a chance to evaluate my skillset. The competition tested typical things I do daily in my field.”
EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION RECEIVES NEARLY $1 MILLION GRANT
CLC's early childhood education program continues to cement itself as a leader in the field with the Early Childhood Access Consortium for Equity grant worth nearly $1 million.

The grant is part of the college's ongoing mission of helping strengthen the state's early childhood workforce.

Recruitment of incumbent early childhood workers and supporting current students are the main focuses of the grant money.
NONTRADITIONAL ROUTE TO A HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA
Having a high school diploma can be a barrier for people trying to earn a higher education degree. CLC offers adult secondary education courses to help those looking to earn a high school diploma.

Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker passed legislation recently changing all references of high school equivalency degrees to high school diplomas. The hope is to remove the stigma often associated with a nontraditional pathway.
COOKING UP FUN AT LOCAL FESTIVALS
CLC's hospitality and culinary program is out in the community this summer, promoting and cooking during summer festivals. Having already been at Vernon Hills Days, the program will be at Grayslake Summer Days Aug. 19 and 20.

Joined by both alumni and current students, the program is not only recruiting, but giving students the chance to work with industry professionals. This helps students gain experience while helping out the college.
CLC IS A FAMILY AFFAIR FOR MATH INSTRUCTOR
Natalia Casper has been a math instructor at CLC since 1998. Not only does her connection to the college go back even further to her mother, but since she started, her children and husband have all earned a degree or credentials.

Casper's children experienced CLC from a young age. They went to daycare and preschool on campus, and they also would occasionally join their mom's classes to watch. The positive experiences they had led to them wanting to take classes at the college.
FOURTH ROUND OF METALLICA SCHOLARS INITIATIVE
For the fourth year, CLC is a recipient of the Metallica Scholars Initiative grant, receiving $10,000. The money from the grant provides support for career and technical education courses.

The resources provided by this partnership will help 25 students start a career in a high-skilled and high-demand field that leads to a job with life sustaining wages,” said Interim Vice President for Education and Chief Academic Officer Dr. Richard Ammon. β€œThese jobs help to build a talent pipeline for our local industries.”

SPOTLIGHT: ALUM LIVING DREAM AS A FIREFIGHTER IN GRAYSLAKE
Joshua Cardin dreamed of being a firefighter when he was growing up in Indiana. After spending time in the Coast Guard, he discovered the fire science technology program at CLC where he made his dream a reality. Now, he is working for the Grayslake Fire Department.

β€œWhile I was in the Coast Guard, I’d take a class here or there online with other colleges. None of them hold a candle to CLC,” he said. β€œIt’s unbelievable how far the college is looking forward and how many opportunities are available for the people of Lake County.”
