Hi ,
Happy April 1st! The school year is almost at its end and we are entering the final lap before we break for summer and start it all over again come fall. For some of you, this means returning to familiar faces where you can expect a return to normalcy. For others, this normalcy may have been disrupted and now you face an uncertainty of what to expect - you have grown in these few months and that comes with new perspectives and reactions. However, there are still some of you who may return to a normal that is not productive or nurturing to your growth and wellbeing; rather, you seek out a drastic change of lifestyle to support your needs and values.
This is where we have to question ourselves and ask "Is a return to normalcy really what we desire?" Who is this normalcy designed for and how does it benefit and oppress our communities we exist in? Rather than crave a return to normalcy, we call you all to demand a new normalcy - a normalcy where the world is kinder and appreciates each other more. Let's learn from all we have gone through and shared with each other these past years and push forward a new social climate that speaks to us all equally. In this, we can expect a brighter future to create and be proud of; one we created together.

New Student & Leadership Programs
|
|
Firstly, the Office of New Student & Leadership Programs wishes to extend our support and love to our students from AAPI communities as we can suggest that this is simply a frustrating, anxious, and exhaustive time. We ask only that you all take time to check in on yourselves, your families, and your circles to make sure that you have what you need to thrive. Our office is always here to help in any way we can.
As we have often expressed with our students during our programming, initiatives, and actions, our office does not tolerate actions and opinions rooted in hate against groups due to their identities, beliefs, and/or lifestyles. The xenophobia and ongoing violence against the AAPI community - disproportionately targeting Asian American women - and the disregard for their value and impact on our nation is unacceptable and should not be taken lightly.
As we have shared during Orientation, we are a community of differences that should be supported and appreciated. These racist actions and sentiments against Asian, Asian American, and Pacific Islander individuals are based in ignorance and do not accord with the values and mission of New Student & Leadership Programs.
While we saw on social media, news, and other broadcasting media platforms the recent extreme violence and murders of Asian-American women, elderly, and other members of the AAPI community, we need to be aware that these are not isolated incidents or that they relate only to our current situation under Covid at the time. These actions are products of years of oppression and socialization to understand these groups as "others" and propagation of false inferiorities. Understanding the impact of such tropes as the 'model-minority'; how anti-Asian racism relates to anti-Blackness, misogyny, capitalism, and imperialism; and how American standards rooted in white supremacy of beauty, success, and social norms exclude Asian representation yet often steal aspects of the culture to benefit itself. When we are creating a new normal for us all to live in - let's keep all of this present in our designs as we shape our systems to work with us and not against.
We invite you all to continue to do your research as you respond and continue dialogue about these topics. Be mindful of how much space you are taking up in these spaces and how much energy you are putting out. For on-campus resources to help regain strength, please browse some selections we have below.

Diversity Fellow Applications are Open
|
|
The Diversity Fellow application will open this Thursday, April 1st and will close April 15th at 11:59pm. Students will be able to apply through the "Tulane Office of Undergraduate Admission" WaveSync page or directly here at this link!
Diversity Fellows is a program run through the Office of Undergraduate Admission. It is a paid fellowship that gives current students the opportunity to assist the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) team in planning and executing our outreach and access programming specifically made for and working with BIPOC and first-generation high school students. Programs such as PreviewTU and BienvenueTU - our multicultural fly-in and/or virtual programs, putting on college application workshops, and helping to coordinate outreach programming throughout the year are just a few of the different type of ways that our Diversity Fellows help to support the team and prospective students.
If interested in knowing more about what all the program entails and to hear from current Fellows, you can attend our Interest Meetings via Zoom on Wednesday, April 7th and Monday, April 12th, both at 5pm.
You will need to register in advance of the meeting to attend (see the links): April 7th at 5pm or April 12th at 5pm. If you have questions or concerns about anything, you can reach out to Angel Carter at acarte3@tulane.edu, Tysha Vulcain-Murrell at tvulcainmurrell@tulane.edu, and/or Jalin Carter at jcarte11@tulane.edu.

Sexual Assault Awareness Month
|
|
April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM). Each April, individuals and institutions come together to raise awareness about sexual violence in all its forms and educate our communities about how to prevent it. We would like to invite you to join the Well for Health Promotion to kick off SAAM on April 1st at 12 to 2 PM on McAlister. The Tulane community will be commemorating SAAM at events throughout the month, including Day of Action on April 6th and Denim Day on April 28th.
While our campus community prioritizes sexual violence prevention and intervention work throughout the year, SAAM gives us a special opportunity to change the culture and conversation around sexual violence and ensure survivors receive the support and empowerment they deserve. We hope you will join us in raising awareness this SAAM!
