A Temporary Change to Emergency Program Act to Allow for Electronic AGM's

To support BC companies, societies and co-operatives through the COVID-19 pandemic, electronic meetings will be allowed during the Province’s State of Emergency.

Under the Emergency Program Act, the order helps corporations hold annual or special general meetings, in accordance with the provincial health officer’s order against gatherings of more than 50 people.

The order will also override requirements under the Business Corporations Act, Societies Act and Cooperative Association Act that prohibit electronic meetings, including a corporation’s own articles, bylaws or rules.

In addition to electronic meetings, all corporations will be able to hold hybrid meetings, giving people the option to participate in person or electronically.

Each company, society and co-operative should consider which meeting method best suits its needs, such as Zoom, Skype or telephone conference calls, as long as each participant is able to communicate and vote, if needed.

If an online meeting platform is chosen, organizers should consider providing a telephone option for people without access to a computer.

One Part of BC Tourism Businesses' COVID-19 Survival Plan...Pivot to Locals

Operators of the Sea to Sky Gondola say they will be trying to target locals to come and visit the attraction if travel restrictions remain in place and international visitors are unable to come. When the Sea to Sky Gondola is able to reopen, it won’t be business as usual. Each family or travelling group will get their own gondola and the cars will be sanitized at the top and the bottom before another group can board. The suspension bridge at the top will have one way traffic and staff will make sure visitors follow physical distancing.

“We know we can put that into practise very quickly once our public health officials say that’s the right thing to do,” said Sea to Sky Gondola GM Kirby Brown. “We’ve been running scenarios like everybody else has, and we’re optimistic we’ll be able to return to work sometime this summer with limited operations.”

Ferry Sector Seeks Federal Assistance

Global trade body Interferry warns that ferry operators need government backing to offset unsustainable losses incurred – expected to be in the billions of dollars – while maintaining lifeline services during COVID-19 pandemic.

Specifically, Interferry is asking for support for the ferry industry from various levels of government as follows: (1) direct financial support to replace lost and severely reduced revenues; (2) provision of interest free loans; (3) tax relief from payroll taxes and other government imposed taxes; and (4) relief from fixed Port fees (where applicable).

The ferry industry transports more than two billion passengers annually – equivalent to the airline industry – along with 250 million personal vehicles and 40 million trucks and trailers. Worldwide, COVID-19 travel restrictions have significantly reduced the number of passengers carried, and in many locations have closed passenger ferry service entirely.

I Love Mission Program

After completing a downtown revitalization just last year, the City of Mission suffered a fire downtown that displaced several residents and damaged three businesses. One of the affected businesses had recently retooled operations to produce personal protective equipment. Now, due to the fire they will not be able to finish the face shields they were hoping to deliver to local emergency services in the area.

On a more positive note, #ILoveMission program has been launched by the Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce, Community Futures North Fraser, Mission Downtown Business Association, The Junction Shopping Centre, Mission City Record, What's On! Mission Magazine and the District of Mission. The campaign has three main goals: online educational training for businesses, identifiable brand and marketing campaign, and a central location and access for all COVID-19 business-related support.
