Sleep, Fatigue, and Teamwork in EMS Research Study

The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has funded investigators at the University of Pittsburgh Department of Emergency Medicine to study sleep and teamwork in EMS.

The goals of this research study are to test the impact of their SaFTiE app and text message system on key indicators of sleep and teamwork in EMS. The study website can be found here.

Get more information on this research study and learn how you can be a part of it here.

Program Directors! Verify the Information on Your Website is Correct!

Please pause for a moment to verify that you have published the following information and that it is correctly stated:

CoAEMSP Letter of Review Status (CoAEMSP Policy I.B.) – for programs that hold the LoR

Prior to CoAEMSP issuing a Letter of Review (LoR), no mention of the CoAEMSP Letter of Review or the CAAHEP accreditation process may be made by or for the Paramedic education program.

If a program holds a CoAEMSP Letter of Review, the sponsor must use the following language when referring to that status in at least one of its comprehensive publications customarily used to officially convey institutional information, it must state:

"The [name of sponsor] Paramedic program has been issued a Letter of Review by the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Professions (CoAEMSP). This letter is NOT a CAAHEP accreditation status, it is a status signifying that a program seeking initial accreditation has demonstrated sufficient compliance with the accreditation standards through the Letter of Review Self Study Report (LSSR) and other documentation. Letter of Review is recognized by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) for eligibility to take the National Registry's Paramedic credentialing examination(s). However, it is NOT a guarantee of eventual accreditation.

CAAHEP Accreditation Status (CoAEMSP Policy IV.A.) – for programs that are accredited

If a program has CAAHEP accreditation, the sponsor must use the following language when referring to that accreditation in at least one of its comprehensive publications customarily used to officially convey institutional information, it must state:

“The [name of program] is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (www.caahep.org) upon the recommendation of the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Professions (CoAEMSP).

Outcomes Data (CoAEMSP Policy IV.D.)

All programs (accredited and LoR) must publish their latest annual outcomes results for the National Registry or State Written Exam, Retention, and Positive Job Placement on the Paramedic program’s homepage of their website.

At all times, the published results must be consistent with and verifiable by the latest Annual Report of the program.

Public Comment Requested: Updated Eligibility Criteria for Initial EMS Education

In an Open Letter the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) has adopted a resolution (22-13) during its June 2022 Board meeting that would allow the option for State Offices of EMS to approve Paramedic education programs that do not hold either Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) accreditation or the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Professions (CoAEMSP's) Letter of Review (LoR), as meeting eligibility requirements for the NREMT paramedic examination and national certification. This resolution is open for public comment until August 2022, at which time a final decision will be made by the NREMT’s Board of Directors.

In the event that this resolution passes, Paramedic candidates completing a program approved by their State Office of EMS would have the option to take the NREMT exam and become a practicing Paramedic without graduating from a CAAHEP accredited or CoAEMSP LoR designated program.

CoAEMSP Position on NREMT Resolution 22-13

The CoAEMSP is highly concerned with the direction the NREMT is taking. CoAEMSP serves to advance the quality of EMS education through accreditation, which serves to ensure paramedic programs meet minimum educational standards and best practices. In doing so CoAEMSP advocates in the best interest of patient safety, ensures competent entry-level paramedic graduates, and advances the profession as a key member of the healthcare continuum.

Be assured, that the CoAEMSP believes that CAAHEP accreditation is necessary for a well-prepared and qualified workforce in Emergency Medical Services. Thus, it stands firmly behind its mission and vision, and will continue to maintain the highest of standards for evidence-based accreditation as defined in the EMS Education Agenda for the Future.

Correction to ACCREDITCON Attendance Numbers

Last months' article about ACCREDITCON 2022 stated that 473 EMS professionals attended, and that it was a record number.

The actual number was 563,which still made it a record number! We apologize for the mistake but are very glad that it turned out to be a 'positive' error.

"[This] was my first time attending a professional conference and I was so impressed with the whole experience. I was asked to attend on behalf of my college even though I’m in a different department; I was essentially an ambassador sent to take really good notes. All of the speakers were so knowledgeable and the information was presented in a really accessible way. Just wanted to pass along my gratitude to you and your team!"

Clinical Coordination

with Patricia Tritt, MA RN

Student experiences in the clinical and EMS field environments are essential to developing critical thinking skills and the application of the theory and practice components of any Paramedic program. Program faculty play a key role in identifying appropriate partners for those rotations, scheduling students, and most importantly, guiding the students as they develop the necessary assessment and management skills. Communication and observation of students during this experience and communication with preceptors are keys to developing and assessing competency.

At the conclusion of this presentation, the participant will be able to:

  • Discuss sequencing options of clinical and field assignments.
  • Identify challenges in selecting the best sites and preceptors to facilitate the student experience.
  • Describe the role of the Clinical Coordinator.

After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar.

Annual Fees

The CoAEMSP Annual Accreditation fee invoice was sent to all Program Director emails on May 4, 2022. If you are the program director of record and did not receive the annual fee invoice, please check your spam/junk folder. If you still do not have it, then email sybil@coaemsp.org.

To save time, streamline processes, reduce data entry, and eliminate additional processing fees, the CoAEMSP strongly encourages your program to pay invoices by ACH (Automated Clearing House). ACH payments are electronic payments that transfer funds directly from a checking account to the payee. Instead of writing out and mailing a paper check, the funds move automatically.

You may pay invoices by Automated Clearing House (ACH) or the View and Pay Invoice option that will appear as a link in the emailed invoice. As a reminder, credit cards are not accepted. The CoAEMSP will accept checks this year; however, please note that we are moving toward requiring all payments being made via ACH or “View and Pay” in the future.

All programs selecting to pay by ACH should email payment advice to sybil@coaemsp.org. A payment advice provides the details on payment and provides advance notice to the recipient.

The advantages of paying via ACH or the “View and Pay” option are:

•   Pay directly through the invoice

•   Secure environment

•   Payment processes in 3 days instead of 3 weeks (checks)

•   Automatically applies to the invoice (less data entry errors)

Have questions? Please contact Sybil Land at sybil@coaemsp.org for any questions regarding invoicing/payments.
