Open to All: Food Distribution Every Wednesday at The Glades Initiative

The Glades Initiative offers weekly food distribution to anyone in need. Those coming in cars are asked to line up beside the office for drive-through pick-up on Wednesdays from 9:30 AM - 10:30 AM. Both drivers and walkers will receive food bags on a first-come-first-serve basis. 

Our staff and volunteers will wear personal protective gear as we handle and distribute the food bags. We ask that drivers and their passengers remain in their vehicles and practice social distancing measures to keep everyone safe.

Ribbon Cutting of Lake Village at the Glades Non-Congregate Sheltering Facility

The Lake Village at the Glades facility is a 42-unit apartment complex that will operate in tandem with the Belle Glade Assessment Center to provide those in need with an adequate sheltering alternative. The renovation of the Lake Village at the Glades facility was partially funded with CARES Act monies.

The Glades Initiative Food Distribution Every Wednesday (Open to Everyone)

For the past year and a half, and continuing into the future, The Glades Initiative offers weekly food distribution to anyone in need. An interactive tool using Google Maps to help people easily locate free food and hot meals in Palm Beach County. This online tool was created to connect individuals seeking food resources to sites near them. Information is English, Spanish, and Creole. United Way updates the information listed on this map weekly. However, locations and hours of distribution may change. Please consider calling the site prior to visiting to verify information listed. Please note that sites may have specific requirements such as ID.

Palm Beach County Library System Celebrates Black History Month in February

The Palm Beach County Library System will be offering events during Black History Month that honor the heritage, contributions, and achievements of the African-American community.
This national celebration, initiated by Dr. Carter G. Woodson, also known as the “Father of
Black History,” has its roots in a weeklong observation in 1926. Although we are not able to offer the events in person this year, participants are invited to enjoy a wide variety of events

Registration Open for 2021 Back to School PBC! Event

Registration is now open for the 2021 Back to School PBC! event. Back to School PBC! will be a drive-up event on Saturday, July 24 at different locations throughout the county to be announced at a later date. Registration is mandatory to participate in this event. Students must reside in designated neighborhoods or mobile home parks in unincorporated Palm Beach County to be eligible to register.

Animal Care and Control Offers $14 Pet Adoptions for Valentine's Day

In celebration of Valentine’s Day, Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control is offering $14 adoptions on all pets in the adoption center for the month of February. All adoptions will ensure that each new furry family members is spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped and has a county license tag, free follow-up vet visit, and free bag of Science Diet pet food to go home with.

If you or people you know need masks, The Glades Initiative has masks and will share them with anyone in the Glades who needs them. These are the white two-ply reusable washable masks given by the health department. Call or come by to pick them up as long as supplies last.

PBC Youth Services Accepting Summer Camp Scholarship Applications

The Palm Beach County Youth Services Department is accepting parent applications for summer camp scholarships beginning January 22 through April 2. The Summer Camp Scholarship Program offers eligible children, ages 5-14 and a special population up to age 17, a full scholarship to day camp for the entire summer. It allows parents to work with the knowledge that their children are safe and gives children educational and recreational opportunities for growth.

From Lake Okeechobee Rural Health Network: LORHN’s Community Health Advocate is available in the Glades region to screen individuals for health and social needs and work with residents one-on-one to help apply for programs, services, and benefits needed. LORHN staff can help enroll in health insurance, apply for discounted medication, establish a medical home, get help with transportation or housing, apply for financial assistance for home, food, or medical bills, link individuals or families with health care providers, and more.

Outside the Box Exhibition at the Dolly Hand

The “Outside the Box” exhibition at Dolly Hand Cultural Arts Center features original artworks inspired by contemporary and historical attributes of The Glades’ natural and human-made environments, communities, recreational activities, education, arts, culture and industry. Featured artworks are made of diverse materials; from oil, acrylic and watercolor paintings to mixed media works with beads and found objects.
