Resiliency Survey Senior Coastsiders is working with a Master's student - Grace Achepohl - at Stanford University who is conducting research into resilience among older adults. Current evidence suggests that experiencing challenges and living through historical periods of population-wide stressors may provide psychosocial strengths and advantages for older adults who are dealing with adversity. Grace would like to explore this among older adults in our Coastside community. This is particularly timely given the many stressors we faced in the past year. We hope to use the findings from the study to provide programming that supports greater resilience among older adults. If you are interested in participating, please contact Sandi Winter at swinter@seniorcoastsiders.org or at 650-726-9056.

A Note from the Executive Director
How do you handle your V.U.C.A. situations?

V.U.C.A. is a concept used to describe situations that are Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous:

  • Volatile - changes that happen rapidly and on a large scale
  • Uncertain - a future that cannot be predicted with any precision
  • Complex - challenges that are complicated by many factors with few single causes or solutions
  • Ambiguous - little clarity on what events mean and what effect they may have

The term originated with students at the U.S. Army War College to describe the geo-political environment after the Cold War and has become popular as an organizational management concept.

According to an article in Forbes magazine 1 , the key to surviving the VUCA world is
understanding how to overcome it. This means setting clear goals, keeping expectations clear and simple, removing ambiguity and complexity wherever possible and - most importantly - having a plan. Having a plan gives you clear guidelines for action, makes it easier to correct a course of action quickly, helps coordinate team efforts and can have a positive impact on team engagement.

Since the outbreak of COVID early last year it certainly seems that the whole world has been operating under V.U.C.A. conditions. While this situation is likely to continue in the short to medium term, the global vaccine rollout provides a glimmer of hope for the future as more and more people feel safe enough to return to activities they previously enjoyed.

The team at Senior Coastsiders has set aside two days in April when we will close for normal operations to focus our attention on planning for our re-opening. In preparation for these planning retreats, we will be sending surveys to the Coastal community to find out what programs, services, events or processes YOU would like to have at the Center. Please share your ideas with us by contacting the office.

We are so looking forward to welcoming participants – both new and returning – to our center. Until then, Spring is a lovely reminder of how beautiful change can truly be.

Very best wishes
Sandi

Unstoppable Seniors (US)
by Casey McClung

In a society where aging is oftentimes equated with ill health and vulnerability, it is important to remember that societal preconceptions cannot define us, and each one of us can write our own story of aging. The world is full of people who had some of their finest moments only after they became seniors. We’ll be highlighting some of these Unstoppable Seniors in the months to come because their story is also a part of our story.

Here is a story of US:
George Dawson
James Arruda
George Dawson was born in a log cabin in Marshall, Texas in 1898. The grandson of a slave, he lived with his family in a three-room cabin and started working for his father when he was just four years old, hauling water from the well, working the cotton fields, and feeding the family’s few chickens and one mule. What made George an Unstoppable Senior is that he decided at age 98 to learn how to read and write. At the age of 102 he published his autobiography entitled “Life Is So Good.” George died in 2001 at 103 years of age after a life that saw monumental world changes, “Yeah, I've seen it all in these hundred years, the good and the bad.”

George Dawson’s story brings us to James Arruda. Raised in Portugal, James Arruda was forced to quit school in the third grade to take on odd jobs to help his family make ends meet. After his family moved to the United States, James went on to captain a lobster boat, serve in the US Coast Guard, and became a carpenter, plumber and even a professional boxer. What makes James an Unstoppable Senior is that he didn’t learn to read or write until he was 91 years old. Inspired by George Dawson, James began the task of becoming literate and at the age of 98 he published his autobiography, entitled “In a Fisherman’s Language.” James died at the age of 99.

Here’s to Unstoppable Seniors everywhere!

Do you know an Unstoppable Senior? Maybe someone local? Let us know! We would love to share their story! Email Casey at cmcclung@seniorcoastsiders.org
