A Note from Headmaster Philabaum

Greetings fellow Athenians,

In the 8th century BC, in the town of Olympia, in the country of Greece, a festival was formed. The sometimes-warring city-states and kingdoms of Ancient Greece came together in a time of peace to compete in games with one another on a field. They ran, they engaged in combat, threw a discus, jumped, and rode horses. It was a time to honor their shared citizenship as Greeks, and as fellow people.

Athens, among the city-states, best represented the values of knowledge and wisdom alongside the virtues of athleticism and strength. The power of the mind and the centrality of the heart is what guided their proud, strength of competition. They represented the whole person – both mind and heart – united and complete.

On April 6, 1896 the first modern Olympics were held in Athens, Greece. And in the Spring of 2016, the first Field Day was held in the field and basketball court of Archway Trivium East. Scholars, ranging from Kindergarten through 5th grade, across grades and across classes, stepped into the field of play and competition alongside one another. Daily engaged in the delightful toil of their studies, our scholars, took a day to enter the field with the victor’s vigor and a warrior’s will!

Today was a day to behold. Scholars at play and in competition – jumping rope, playing with a parachute, racing through the obstacle course, engaging in Latin trivia – their joyful spirit had a special impact today on the hearts of each of us! This day was a reminder about the importance of play – the wonderful and fundamental essence of being a child. Play is at the heart of the human experience. It is so natural it is almost difficult to define. It is about discovering and relishing in the wonder of the world. Our students played together as fellow children, united together as a community. To see our students at play today was a gift. It also happened to be our first in-person community event since March of 2020. It was executed prudently and safely, while maximizing the experience for our scholars.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this day happen! Thank you parents for the abundance of volunteers who came to run our activities. Thank you teachers for taking such great care of our scholars today. And a special thank you to two people: Coach Patrick Conklin and our PSO President Tracie Petro, who designed and executed the vision for this event, down to the details.

Happy Field Day! I hope you enjoy your weekend with together, and that you are able to play together as a family.

With Devotion,

Stephen Philabaum
Headmaster
Archway Trivium East

Math Textbook Return

If you still have a copy of the hardbound math books that were distributed earlier this year, please return these to your child’s homeroom teacher. We bound these to be re-used each year, so please take a moment to ensure you still not have a copy. If you are a Distance Learning family, you may return these to the front office. Thank you for your support!

Distance Learners Health Screening

All 3rd and 5th grade Distance Learners, as well as scholars who are new to ATE, need to complete a 5 minute hearing and vision screening as part of our academy. Rather than asking students back at a separate time, when your child completes their AZ Merit test, they will be taken to the Nurse to have this done. If you have any questions, please reach out to Carrie Nielson at cnielson@archwaytriviumeast.org.
PSO Night at Papa Murphy's - Wednesday, April 7

The Trivium PSOs have partnered with Papa Murphy's for a PSO Restaurant Night every first Wednesday of the month from 10am-8pm at the Dysart location in Avondale. The date for April is Wednesday, April 7. $3 from each regularly priced pizza will be donated back to the schools. WOW! You can order ahead online, in-person, or by phone. Show this ad or mention Trivium when you arrive to pick up your order.

Additionally, mark you calendar for Tuesday, April 13 for PSO Night at Cafe Zupas! More information coming soon!
Day Porter Appreciation Day - Friday, April 9

We have two amazing porters who have been so integral in keeping our scholars healthy and safe at school, so we want to shower them with all the love and thanks they deserve! Without them, our safe return to in-person learning would not have been possible. On Friday, April 9, we want to celebrate them with Porter Appreciation Day! We are asking scholars to trace, cut out, and decorate their hands with notes of thanks to our porters. We will be collecting hands and any gifts in the drop off line on April 9. See flyer below for full details.
PSO Water Bottle Drive for St. Mary's Food Bank - THANK YOU!

Thank you to all the families who contributed to our annual Water Bottle Drive in support of St. Mary's Food Bank! Thanks to your generosity, the event was a great success!! Thanks are also extended to our PSO and parent volunteers who helped with collection. Way to go, Athenians!
State Testing Dates (3rd-5th Grade Students Only)

Please mark your calendars for the following state-testing dates. In order to best prepare for the exams, we ask that you take note of the dates below and plan ahead. If a student leaves the testing environment, they cannot continue their exam and it will be submitted as is. Please do not schedule appointments for these dates or pull your children out early.

We recommend that your scholars get a good night’s sleep the day before and a nutritious breakfast in the morning. Please have students bring the following a healthy snack and water bottle for the break during testing. Additionally, all students should bring a set of headphones, as certain parts of the test require audio. These must not be Bluetooth headphones, but be able to connect via an auxiliary cord.

Archway Trivium East received $14,897 in December 2020 from this initiative. The Telethon will take place on September 25th and a full description of the position can be found here. If you are interested in serving on the committee, please contact Haley Kucharo at hkucharo@greatheartsaz.org
Tax Credit Reminder

PLEASE NOTE! With the long weekend, coming up, you may be inclined to do your taxes if you haven’t already, or maybe you will procrastinate because you figure you have more time. Although the federal tax filing deadline has been extended this year to 5/17/2021, please note that the AZ state filing deadline has NOT been extended. Both the filing deadline AND the deadline to submit your AZ Public School Tax Credit to Trivium remains 4/15/2021. Please take advantage of this super easy way to support the school with a portion of your tax dollars! This year, we are also allowed to use a portion to help cover the many COVID-related expenses that have been incurred by the school. bit.ly/TriviumEastTC
