Information regarding federal disaster assistance is available to residents and businesses who were impacted by the Gaylord tornado. Even though the tornado did not strike Antrim County, businesses that suffered financial losses because of the tornado may apply for low-interest, long-term economic injury disaster loans (EIDL) even if their business did not sustain physical damages. Also, because Grayling is so close to Gaylord, there may be business owners who live in Gaylord and need the information.

There is currently a disaster loan outreach center open at the Gaylord City Hall providing one on one assistance completing low-interest, long-term. disaster loan applications. It will be open until July 28. In addition to SBA customer service representatives, a consultant with the Small Business Development Center is providing free assistance with financial paperwork Thursday, July 21, Tuesday, July 26, and Thursday, July 28.

Employers Invited to Apprenticeship Lunch and Learn

NORTHWEST LOWER, MI—Businesses and organizations from across northwest Lower Michigan are invited to attend an apprenticeship lunch and learn Wednesday, July 27 in Traverse City. The information session will run from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm at the Northwest Michigan Works! Conference Center, 1209 S. Garfield Avenue, Traverse City.

The session will include an overview of US Department of Labor registered apprenticeships and the simplified process of developing or growing a program and using apprenticeships to fill workforce gaps. There will be multiple occupations explored with a focus on the healthcare, public safety, and customer service-related industries.

"This is the perfect opportunity to explore the benefits of registered apprenticeship for recruitment, training, and retention of highly skilled workers," said Evelyn Szpliet, Regional Director of Apprenticeship Services for Northwest Michigan Works!. "We will discuss resources, the ease of launching a program, and the wrap-around services offered through Northwest Michigan Works!. It is the right time for employers to participate in a registered apprenticeship."

An expert employer apprenticeship panel including partners from Kalkaska Memorial Health Center, Traverse Health Clinic, and Honor Bank will share their registered apprenticeship experience and answer questions about the practicality of the program.
All types of industries, union, and non-union, small or large are encouraged to attend. Lunch will be provided and there is no charge to attend the event. Seating is limited and RSVPs should be sent to Jane.Breederland@NetworksNorthwest.org.

Registered apprenticeships are offered through the U.S. Department of Labor and are a proven training method for employers to build a talent pipeline of highly skilled, educated employees. Northwest Michigan Works! provides technical assistance and administrative support for registered apprenticeships, including development and implementation guidance.
Stay connected with Northwest Michigan Works! at a Career Connection meeting where you can learn about job opportunities and improve job search skills while networking with other job seekers and professionals. Check the Northwest Michigan Works! calendar to see when you can join a Career Connection meeting this week in Benzonia, Manistee, Petoskey, or Traverse City.
